Hi BOBMOORE9
I am an independent advisor here to help
could you please provide more details? Which desktop icons were lost? what was happening at the time that they were lost?
have you checked Windows system restore to see if you have any restore points available for a date and time when these icons were not missing?
Hi Bob. I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 10 year Windows MVP here to help you.
Here's how to System Restore to a point before the problem began following this guide: http://home.bt.com/tech-gadgets/computing/how-t...
You can System Restore from Repair Mode if it will not work in Windows, following one of these paths: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2294-advanc...
System Restore is your first line of defense if Windows ever malfunctions as it can run even from recovery media to get you back before a problem started. It should always be turned on C drive with plenty of disk space (5-15%) configured.
I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Hi Bob
1
If you can get into Windows 10
Press the Shift Key and click Restart
Your PC will boot into the Windows Recovery Environment
Go to Troubleshoot - Advanced Option - System Restore
Check to see if you have a restore point you can go back to
2
If you cannot get into Windows:
Start your PC, just as Windows attempts to load (spinning dots), press and hold Power Button for 5 - 10 seconds to perform a Hard Shut Down
Do this twice
On the third start Windows will boot into the Recovery Environment and from there you can access System Repair, Safe Mode, Command Prompt . . . etc.
Go to Troubleshoot - Advanced Option - System Restore
Check to see if you have a restore point you can go back to
Exactly what do you want to restore? The registry? All of Windows? Your data files? Everything on your hard drive?
To what earlier date do you want to restore it?
Why do you want to do this? Are you having a problem? Please be explicit about exactly what the problem is. Restoring to an earlier date may or may not be the best course of action for you.
