How to fix my keyboard on hp laptop

2 years ago some keys on my laptop keyboard, randomly stopped working. I don't know why but I tried everything to fix it from trouble shooting, updating/uninstalling keyboard drivers, restarting, smashing the key in case it was just stuck, changing keyboard settings, everything I've possibly found on the internet. After those 2 years, I stopped using the laptop bht recently I turned it on and to my surprise all the keys were working perfectly fine, idk how but it was. Then I left the laptop on sleep and the next day, the backspace and " key stopped working. I tried everything again and nothing worked. The only thing I haven't tried is a BOIS update but it's quite difficult because when I put in my serial number, model number or product name/number, HP doesn't know the exact laptop I'm using and neither do I so I can't download a BOIS for my exact laptop. I've looked on the battery and tried commands but HP still doesn't find what laptop it is. Can someone please help me so I can resolve this issue? Was it just an update over the few months to years that resolved the problem in the past?

Hello Nathan, My name is Jayshri. I'm an Independent Advisor and I'll be glad to help you today.

To resolve the keyboard issue on your HP laptop, here are some steps you can try, including working around the BIOS update challenge:

Check under the laptop or battery compartment for labels.

    Open Command Prompt and run:

    wmic bios get serialnumber

Or use HP Support Assistant to find the model and serial number.

Power off the laptop, disconnect peripherals, and remove the battery (if possible).

Hold the power button for 15-30 seconds.

Reinsert the battery and restart the laptop.

Visit HP Support, enter your serial/model number, and download the BIOS update.

Run the update utility while plugged in.

If HP doesn’t recognize your laptop, try the HP Product Detection Tool.

Restart the laptop and press F10 to enter the BIOS menu.

Select Reset to Default Settings, save, and exit.

Open Device Manager > Keyboards > Right-click your keyboard > Properties.

Uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device" under the Power Management tab.

Open Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Advanced Startup.

Restart and select Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart.

Press F4 to enter Safe Mode and test the keyboard.

    Hello Nathan,

If the Power Management tab is not visible and the BIOS update did not resolve the issue, it suggests that the problem might not be power-related. Here are additional steps you can try:

Open Device Manager and expand Keyboards.

Right-click on your keyboard and select Uninstall device.

Restart the laptop, and Windows will reinstall the driver automatically.

HP has a built-in Hardware Diagnostics tool:

Restart your laptop and press F2 repeatedly while booting to enter HP Diagnostics.

Select Component Tests > Keyboard Test and follow the prompts to identify any hardware issues.

Connect an external USB keyboard to see if the issue persists. If the external keyboard works fine, the internal keyboard might need to be replaced.

Backup your data, then consider performing a reset or clean install of Windows to rule out software corruption:

Go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery and select Reset this PC.

Let me know if any of these steps help or if you need further help!
