Lagging on my external monitor when gaming.

So recently I bought a new monitor, the ASUS Predator XB273 and since I don't have a PC yet, I connected my laptop, (Asus Vivobook E406) and ever since I played a game with it, my FPS dropped down to 20, but when I disconnected the HDMI from my laptop I ran the game again and the FPS was doing way better. A friend told me to change the refresh rates so I did, my laptop's refresh rate is 60hz so I changed my monitors refresh rate to 60hz, still did not improve, then I turned on overdrive from my monitors buttons on the side andddd it did not improve. Please help I just want to run the game like how it runs on my laptop.

Hi Brandon, my name is Neil, and I'm a Windows 10 user like you.

I'll be happy to help you with your question.

Sorry you're experiencing lag with your external monitor.

Normally, updating your monitor and GPU drivers will fix this issue.

To update your GPU driver, please make sure you get this driver from your laptop manufacturer (Asus). The reason for this is that laptop GPU's have slight modifications made to the driver architecture to get the best performance out of the GPU and the custom system.

These drivers can only be found on Asus. If you download the driver direct from the GPU manufacturer (NVIDIA or AMD), these drivers are missing these small modifications and can cause issues with your system.

Also, don't worry if a GPU driver appears to be old. This is normal, as laptop manufacturers don't release a lot of GPU drivers. They only release ones that work and are fully supported, so these tend to be older in contrast to a GPU manufacturer's drivers release schedule.

To check for any updates for your monitor, please do the following:

Right click your Windows Start button.

    Click on "Device Manager"

In Device Manager, expand the section ">Monitors" and locate your monitor.

Right click your monitor and then click on "Update driver".

Click on "Search automatically for drivers".

See if it finds any updated drivers for your monitor.

If none are found, click on "Search for updated drivers on Windows Update" and see if you can find any drivers there.

Please do let me know how you get on.

    Kindest regards,

    Neil

Hey man, so I went to the ASUS Website and I downloaded a new graphics card, I ran the game again and got the same amount of FPS, I tested it more and when I plugged in my monitor I ran 20-26 FPS, but when I disconnected my monitor and just played on my laptop I ran 30-40. I don't know what to do know and my monitor didn't need any new updates.

    Hi Brandon,

When you are using the external monitor, you need to close the lid of your laptop screen as this will also cause your monitor to lag.

Please try this and get back to me.

    Kindest regards,

    Neil

    Hi Brandon,

OK, on your laptop, instead of using Windows 10 to mirror your screen to your external monitor, cancel this and look for a key on your keyboard (usually an F Key) with a symbol on it that will more than likely look like one of the symbols in the picture below.

Pressing this button will instantly turn your laptop screen off and send your display to your external monitor (that's what the button represents). This is how I use my own external display on my laptop. Pressing the button a second time will reverse the process and turn your external monitor off and send the display back to your laptop screen. This process absolutely ensures that there is no secondary display being used by your GPU, and therefore dragging your FPS down on your external monitor.

Depending on whether the F Keys are dominant or the symbols are dominant on those F keys, you may need to press the Fn Key + the F Key with the External Display symbol on it to access this feature.

99% of laptops have this key.

This should make sure you have a lag-free experience hopefully. I was hoping that closing the lid would be enough, but sometimes you need to use the Ext Key to make sure only one display is being utilised.

Please do let me know how you get on.

    Kindest regards,

    Neil
