I'm the admin of a public university and we're seeing the exact same. We've had the same M365 Group naming policy (which adds a suffix in parentheses), same blocked word list since 2020, and both have remained unchanged since. Users have been self-creating teams and Groups for years now. All users in our tenant are allowed to create M365 Groups as well.

Since the other day users cannot create a team from "new" Teams. (Neither the desktop app nor the web app at the /v2 URL)

If I remove our naming policy, it works again. If I re-apply our naming policy that adds the (UserCreated) suffix, the issue recurs.

This issue is not reproducible in the v1 client.

Clearly, Microsoft either broke something with the new Teams client's interaction with M365 Group naming policies, or new Teams now no longer jives with certain characters and Microsoft did not let us know.

I have found a temporary "fix". I am a faculty user working through my universities account (.edu).

ONLY in the desktop client: open the "Microsoft Teams classic (work or school)", and do not let it force you to open the "NEW" teams desktop client. (Note: this isn't possible on the web, as it will not let you stay in the classic mode).

Only then could I create a new team and add channels as I needed to for this new semester.

In the new desktop client, and in the new web client it simply will NOT work.

Maybe this will help others. It was infuriating to try to overcome this obstacle.

Same issue in our Educational tenant, I've contacted Microsoft support and they confirmed to me this is a bug. The anticipated fix is expected in February.

Nope, still broken. And no official incident/advisory from Microsoft either to point the finger at. :(

    Hello MS,

I got the same error when creating a Team with the new Teams client and Edge: https://teams.microsoft.com/v2/).

"The team prefix or suffix is incorrect, please try again."

    Tenant is EDU!

    Kind Regards,

    Eric
