Hi all,

tryng to install update KB5018410, at the end of the process, the system notified that it's impossible to complete the install and that Windows will resume to previous version. Now is a Win 10 Pro 21H2 and this error occurs on a Dell latitude 5580 laptop (Intel i5-6300U CPU).

I tried to resolve with WU troubleshooting, cleaning WU cache and any files inside WU folder stopping and restarting WU agent. With no luck.

Reading discussion around, some had this problem with multi-partition disk systems (win/linux mostly) but it's not my case.

I hope someone can help me, please. I attach today WU log:

Thank you in advance

Matteo

    I'm sorry John I misunderstood,

anyway I tried but with no luck too. The response of the installer of the in-place upgrade is: I cannot install Windows.

I'm starting to think that this Win10Pro have serious problems.

    Regards,

    Matteo

    Hi Matteo,

    These are the problem entries

Installer name: 'Boot File Servicing (BFSVC) Installer'

    2022-10-12 16:41:48, Info CSI 00001142 BFSVC: 'ServiceBootFiles MuiOnly:n Res:n Fonts:n BootMgrOvw:n BootStatOvw:n DbgTrn:y SuspendBDE:n'

2022-10-12 16:41:48, Info CSI 00001143 BFSVC: 'Using source OS version a00004a610001'

    2022-10-12 16:41:48, Info CSI 00001144 BFSVC: 'Copying boot files CopyBootManager(Yes) C:\Windows\boot\EFI -> \?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolume2\EFI\Microsoft\Boot '

    2022-10-12 16:41:48, Info CSI 00001145 BFSVC: 'Error creating \?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolume2\EFI\Microsoft\Boot\cs-CZ\ path! Last Error = 0xb7'

2022-10-12 16:41:48, Info CSI 00001146 BFSVC: 'Error copying boot files from C:\Windows\boot\EFI to \?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolume2\EFI\Microsoft\Boot! Last Error = 0xb7'

    2022-10-12 16:41:48, Info CSI 00001147 BFSVC: 'ServicingBootFiles failed. Error = 0xb7'

The update is unable to service the boot files. It's getting the error 0xb7 (ERROR_ALREADY_EXISTS - "Cannot create a file when that file already exists.")

The issue can be fixed by formatting the EFI system partition and regenerating the boot files. Before that, you must backup the system image using Macrium Reflect (Free). The backup should include the hidden EFI partition.

If the procedure below is done incorrectly, your system will not boot.

Once you've backed up the Windows/boot partitions, create a Windows 10 Setup disk and boot the computer from the disk.

When the "Windows Setup" dialog appears, press Shift + F10 to open a Command Prompt window.

In the Command Prompt window, type:

    • diskpart

    then, type:

    • list volume

The above command shows the list of volumes present. Locate the EFI/ESP system partition (the hidden FAT32 partition whose size could be anywhere starting from 100 MB. On some systems, it could be a 500MB partition)

Let's say the EFI partition is "volume 3". In that case, type:

    • select volume 3
    • assign letter R:
    • exit

    type:

    • md c:\bootfiles
    • robocopy r:\efi c:\bootfiles\ /MIR

    type

    • format R: /fs:fat32

Press "Y" to proceed with the format.

    • Type in the volume label (as "ESP")

    Copy boot files from C:\Windows:

    • bcdboot C:\Windows /s r: /f UEFI

    Reboot the computer normally.

    Hi John,

I thank you anyway. You don't need to apologize.

I'd like to keep the installation of a clean copy of Windows as last resort.

    Regards,

    Matteo

    Hi John,

I thank you for your kind answer. I tried all four proposed solutions but unfortunately none gave results.

WU continues with: "we couldn't complete the updates".

    Kind regards,

    Matteo
