Transfer a 2021 Pro Plus license to a new device

Hi,

I bought a Pro Plus 2021 license last month and installed it on my PC - I have just upgraded to a new PC and need to transfer the license, but the activation wizard inside office just sends me to the Virtual Assistant who apparently cant help.

I am aware its a single install license - but I dont want it active on the old PC, only the new.

How do I deactivate the old device/activate the new one?

Thanks

Good day Drago_Drake! I am glad to be able to provide assistance to you today. I understand that you are looking into transferring your Office license from the existing PC to a new one. Kindly check and try the below and see how it goes.

    • Go to http://office.microsoft.com/myaccount on the new PC
    • Go to Install and from there you should see the install on your current PC and then you can click on the deactivate link to disassociate the license on it
    • You can now try to install it on the new PC afterwards

    Regards,

    Paul R.

    Hi Paul,

When I click the first link (office/myaccount) I get an error that it cant find any subscriptions - which makes sense, it is likely looking for an Office 265 subscription, which I dont have. I have a perpetual Pro Plus license.

If I try to reinstall the office suite I just get the same error once it installs - that there is already an install and I need to transfer the license. It then pushes me to use the Virtual Assistant who tells me it cant help do I want a call back from support, which then fails with 'something went wrong' when I put my phone number in.

I even went to the trouble of putting my old PC back together, connecting it to the internet, and uninstalling office - just to make sure that the license wasnt currently installed anywhere but my new PC. However I still get the same error.

I suspect the problem is on Microsofts end where the license needs to be set as ready for activation - but I currently have no way to ask for that as the only two options I am given (virtual assistant and call back) are just erroring.

    Thanks

Hi Drago_Drake, can you login via this page instead https://account.microsoft.com/services/ and check it from there? You can also check out the link below for reference and follow the guide there.

    Hi,

The https://account.microsoft.com/services/ link provides the ability to see I have a license, and offers the ability to download the office software - but nothing about activation.

I have previously downloaded office (again) using that link in case it embedded the activation, but I just get the same error.

When I try to use the virtual agent to reactivate I just get told there is a problem (both with reactivating and getting a call back).

But looking at your second link, I now think I at least know what the problem is (or at least suspect what the problem is) based on the following:

"If you have a retail license and need to move it to a new computer, uninstall it from the old computer and install and activate it on the new computer. The retail licenses are limited to one computer and cannot be moved to new computers frequently like the subscription version, so deactivation is not necessary. You are limited in the number of times and how frequently you can reactivate it on new hardware (once every 90 days)."

Bolded for emphasis - because I bought and installed office within the last 90 days, it will not reactivate on a new PC, even if I have uninstalled it from the old one.

Which leads me to believe what I need to do is speak to support and get them to re-activate the license manually - however as you can see the agent isnt working. Is there a phone number I can directly call/email address to use, instead of going through the agent?

    Thanks
