How can I force quit Excel?

Split from this thread.

I have the same issue.  Obtained an excel file from a govt website on my personal macbook, tried to open it and now I can't close the file, can't close excel because of the error message.  I just want to close the file and delete it but I can't figure out how.

Hi Steven,

Please force the Excel to quit by following the steps in How to force an app to quit.

Then move the workbook you would like to delete to the Trash, or select it, then press Command (⌘)–Delete. If you would like to empty the Trash, click the Trash > Empty and you can also choose Finder > Empty Trash.

    press ctrl+alt+del

    select task manager

    right click excel

    select end task

    Similar, but that's a Windows solution - this is a Mac concern.
