Windows 8 - Windows could not search for new updates Code 80242005

On Windows 8 machine that was upgraded from Win7 I get the following error when trying to check for updates.

"Windows could not search for new updates

There was a problem check for updates

Error(s) found:

Code 80242005 Windows update ran into a problem"

If I go to "Change Settings" and remove the check box for "Give me updated for other Microsoft products when I update Windows" I can check for and install updates.

I would like to check for updates for other MS products at the same time, so any help would be appreciated.

Thx

Gerson

None of these recommendations fix this issue.  It would be helpful for you to duplicate the issue at Microsoft and actually find a solution to the code error instead of issuing recommendations.  If you do not have a solution, providing recommendations that do not address the issue only waste the time of those that are actually trying to fix the issue.  Has there been any fix for this error code as of this time?

Dodge - agreed - neither suggestion worked.

It's possible that Security Essentials didn't get properly removed when upgrading from Win 7 and that's interfering.

Tried all three methods and none work.

I agree this is very frustrating it would be nice to know if MS is able to replicate this issue and what is the status of the issue.

I agree to all statements above. I have the same problem - windows update does not work. It works when switching off "microsoft updates" But so I do not get updates on office products and so on - even windows does not get updated because of that error.
