How do I resolve Windows Update issues?

Hello guys,

I am facing a bug with Windows Update starting a few days ago. Earlier, when I used to check updates for Windows, there is always a Microsoft Defender update (and that too, at least thrice a day). But a few days ago, they have stopped coming. This seemed unusual so I ran Windows Update troubleshooter and found out that there is indeed an issue with Windows Update.

It says that the troubleshooter has made some changes to my system, but it doesn't seem to be the case (by making some changes to my system, I am assuming it is claiming to have fixed the issue) because it shows what the problem is, but it is only detected, not fixed.

Please help me in resolving this bug. Your assistance is highly appreciated.

    Hi AnonymousFYIFYI_107-

I'm Kevin B. Windows user like you. I do apologize for the inconvenience, let me help you sort things out.

Kindly reset your Windows components first:

    Hello Kevin,

Thanks for your response. I followed the steps in your solution and after running the Windows Update troubleshooter again, it shows that only 2/3rd of the whole problem is solved.

I am still not able to check for Windows Updates which is the 1/3rd of the whole problem unsolved that I started out as the main topic. What should I do next?

    Hello Kevin,

Thank you for your response. Unfortunately, the steps in the link also didn't work, even though it's an official Microsoft Support site. And I also apologise for replying a day late. However, the reason I replied a day late is that after trying the steps out in the link and rigorously finding other DIY solutions on the web, I finally contacted Microsoft Support (I kept it for the last because I thought this will be an easy issue to resolve but turns out I was wrong.)

They said that there was an issue with Microsoft Defender definition updates only on my device which the troubleshooter titled "Check for Windows update issues" confused me into believing that this is an issue with all types of updates.

The above info got confirmed after I got two updates after half an hour that required not only a download and install but also a restart. But no Microsoft Defender definition updates. So that means there was no issue with other types of updates but Microsoft Defender definition updates only.

Following this information, Microsoft Support gave me all the instructions and steps to fix this issue.

I shared this information so that you can rest assured that the bug is resolved now. Thank you very much for your help in resolving this issue, I hope you have a great day ahead.

EDIT: If you are or any other reader is curious about what solution Microsoft Support provided me, then I have no problem sharing it.

Since this was an issue for Microsoft Defender definition updates, here are the steps for it-

    1. Open Windows Security application.
    2. Go to Virus & threat protection.
    3. Scroll to the bottom.
    4. Click on Microsoft Defender Antivirus options.
    5. Toggle the Periodic scanning to switch on.
    6. If you are granted by a UAC dialog box, press Yes.

You will get Microsoft Defender definition updates now. Since these definition updates come at least thrice a day (at least in my experience), you can try clicking "Check for updates" in Windows Update settings to try the fix out yourself.
