Windows 10 update asks to uninstall Avira AntiVir (which I don't have)

Hello everyone,

a few days ago I tried to update my Windows 10 installation. My computer tried many times to upgrade the OS, but after the first reboot, it was keeping rebooting constantly, and after the 4th reboot Windows automatically recovered the previous state, saying that the upgrade failed.

Googling for a solution, I have found out that a bug in the updater affected several thousands of devices, and I have installed the bugfix from the knowledge base.

Now, there is an additional issue bothering my Windows. When I start the upgrade procedure, it asks to uninstall Avira AntiVir because it's not compatible with the upgrade. I would do that, but I have never installed Avira AntiVir in my life. I tried to search in the disk and in the registry with the keywords "Avira" and "AntiVir", but I don't get any result. Indeed, I have never downloaded not even the installer of that software.

The upgrade can't proceed, the only thing I can do is to cancel it.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Solved (for me):  I had the same issue, the Win 10 install/upgrade kept asking me to manually uninstall "Avira", and another item "BDrom driver".  Like Francesco Di Caprio, I had never installed Avira AntiVir, nor was there any evidence of that in the registry nor on my hard drive after doing a thorough search. Earlier in the installation process Windows asked me to uninstall UBCD4Win, which appears to have arrived preinstalled with the Dell computer. I unistalled that using the control panel. After uninstalling that, (now a second attempt to install Win-10) I started getting the repeated warnings about "Avira". I did a registry search and a file search for "Avira". Nothing.  I did a registry search for UBCD4Win and removed all entries containing that. There was LOTS of UBCD4Win stuff remaining that the uninstaller did not uninstall.  Also did a search on the hard drive, there was a subdirectory with tons of UBCD4Win utilities. I deleted all UBCD4Win directories and subdirectories.  Why lingering UBCD4Win files or registry entries trigger a warning about "Avira" is a mystery, it seems unconnected, but apparently it does.  Then I restarted the WIN-10 upgrade (third attempt). It worked.

    Hi,

if you are updating to 1803 check for an avipbb.sys in the C:\Windows\SysWOW64\drivers folder and if found remove it as that was reported as the issue by a user in the following topic:

    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/for...

In the topic there is further information on finding the problematic file.

    Open Windows File Epxlorer

    Navigate to :

    c:\windows\system32\drivers

Check for this file in that folder - avipbb.sys

If you find it, delete it

    Try the update again

After a lot of of tries I finally  managed to update to 1709.

I also followed another article from 'TM_von' from 'Trend micro home users community' who suggest to check the registry to know which software is the culprit.

    I joint his proposal:

Step 1: Check what file Windows is detecting by going to registry entry: "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/WindowsNT/CurrentVersion/AppCompatFlags/UpgradeMigration"

**Step 2:**Delete the file in registry entry’s value data (There should be a path file under the tab 'Data'. Kindly delete that specific file.)

**Step 3:**Try Doing a Windows update again.

An in fact I had this UBCD4 in this register key which was pointing to a file on my data HDD. I delete the file and it works.

I keep in mind this register key for the future.

Difficult to imagine, that with the message output from microsoft asking to uninstall Avira which was never install on my  system !

Thank you to all of you.

I had the same Problem with the April 2018. I also did not have Avira installed (i might have in the past) and I tried EVERYTHING. Cleaning registry with the recommended tools, used the Avira Uninstall Tool i Windows Safe Mode and whatnot. What solved it for me in the end was INSTALLING Avira - and voila the update went through. After the update I immedeately uninstalled it with the avira uninstaller tool again.

    Good luck
