Excel Running Slow, Hanging, Freezing, Not Responding

For about a week and a half, Excel has been opening and running slow, hanging, freezing, not responding ... to the point that it is unusable.

I have gone through all of the Microsoft suggested diagnostics:

Started Excel in Safe Mode

Installed the latest updates

Checked to make sure Excel is not in use by another process

Investigated potential issues with add-ins

Investigated Excel file details and content (btw ... the issue doesn't just happen when I'm working in any particular file. I can start a fresh file, and I run into the same issue.)

Performed a selective startup

Ran a repair on Office programs

Verified that antivirus software is up-to-date and not conflicting with Excel

Ran a virus scan, did a disc cleanup, cleared RAM cache

Completely uninstalled and reinstalled Office 365

Any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi ChelleOnline,

I'm Adie, and I'm happy to help you today.

Sorry to hear you're experiencing this issue. You may try these steps and see if the issue will be fixed.

    1. In Excel (or in other Office apps like PowerPoint, Outlook), go to File > Options > select 'Advanced'.
    2. Under Display, check the box for ‘Disable hardware graphics acceleration’.
    3. Click OK.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you need further assistance.

    Best regards,

    Adie

    Adie,

This worked! (I hope it's a permanent fix!)

Was there a Microsoft update that caused this issue?

    Thanks for your help!

I'm glad to hear your issue has been resolved.

Sometimes the performance problem in Office apps is caused by a graphic issue. It is important to keep your Windows OS updated to prevent this from happening.
