Windows 7 SP1 just installed but tne machine refuses to boot now.

Had to borrow a keyboard as the USB wireless keyboard wouldn't work.

Found that by allowing unsigned drivers the machine will boot.

How do I identify WHICH driver is the unsigned one causing troubles as I don't recall loading anything new recently, certainly not in the day or two before the update installed.

When it boots the machine "stutters" by freezing and then working again so something is wrong but all the drivers report as the latest and as working fine?

Follow the below steps and check if the issue persists.

Step 1:

Use Sigverif.exe tool to find all files on your computer that are not digitally signed.

To use the Sigverif.exe tool, follow these steps:

a. Click Start, click Run, type "sigverif" in the Open box, and then click OK.

b. Click Advanced, click Look for other files that are not digitally signed, click Browse, locate the Windows\System32\Drivers folder, and then click OK two times.

c. Click Start.

After Sigverif.exe is completed, a list of all unsigned drivers that are installed on your computer appears. Let us know the results.

You will have to try updating unsigned drivers to solve the issue.

Step 2:

**Disable Driver Signing in Windows 7 Using Group Policy Editor:**a. Click on Start, then click on run, type gpedit.msc to open the local group’s policy editor.

b. Expand ‘Administrative Templates’ (it’s under ‘User Configuration’). Expand ‘System’. Click ‘Driver Installation’.

c. In the right panel, double click on ‘Code Signing for Device Drivers’.

d. Choose ‘Enabled’ in the window that appears. In the underlying options, choose ‘Ignore’. This disables drivers signing in Windows 7, and now you can install unsigned drivers in Windows.

e. Click Apply, OK. Restart your computer to install unsigned drivers.

Also, you may want to consider test-signing your driver using a certificate you create on your machine.

Worked fine until it installed another update.

Now I get BSOD on all options.

Rolled back all updates but no good.

Loaded image back over C: but to no avail.

Can boot and run an old beta version of Win 7.

Can get to prompt from recovery screen, not from boot option.

No idea how to go about fixing it from here.

Another update was offered promising stability benefits and I installed it.

This resulted in BSOD when trying to boot. At this point I no longer had the option of testing anything so I rolled back SP1. I noted that it would uninstall a whole heap of drivers in the info screen.

This got me back to a stable boot situation. Sigverif lists about 74 unsigned drivers when I run it, interestingly most of them appear to be windows system stuff. They dont seem to effect the boot process at all.

Stutter was reduced by dropping back MsMpEng.exe to 10% maximum and finally eliminated by shutting off a couple of un-necessary processes though I am not quite sure which one finally sealed the deal as it was intermittent coming in bursts of freezing.

I will let it settle a bit and try installing SP1 again in a few days once I clarify which process was causing the stutter.
