I cannot get system restore to work in Windows 7.

I have tried several different restore points but get the following error message:

System restore did not complete successfuly. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed.

Details;

System restore failed to extract the original copy of the directory from the restore point.

Source %SystemRoot%\registration

Destination: ComPlusStaging

You can try System Restore again and choose a different restore point. If you continue to see this error, you can try an advanced reovery method. For more information see What is recovery.

Haven't found any help so far. Can anyone advise?

    Hi biscuit_42,

    1.      Check the Volume shadow copy service in services window. To check follow these steps:

    i.                    Click Start and type services.msc in the search box

ii.                  Search for the Volume shadow copy service

Please let us know the Status and start up type. Make sure the start- up type is automatic

Steps to set the services to automatic

    i.                    Search for the service

ii.                  Right click on the service

iii.                If the service is stopped then Start the service

    iv.                 Select Properties

    v.                   And in the Start-up type select Automatic

    2.      Disable the firewall/ anti-virus temporarily installed on your computer and then check if the issue still persists. If the issue resolves, then you might need to uninstall the software and reinstall it back or change the settings and check.

    Thanks and Regards:

I had the same problem as the OP. I follow the steps in number one and saw that my service was set to manual. I started it and also set it to automatic.

I'm not sure how to complete step two -- how long should I disable my firewall and antivirus? How do I "check if the issue still persists"? The "issue" is that I could not tun system restore. Should system restore work now?

Anyway, I really appreciate the help, but you lost me at step 2. I want to resolve this. Thanks.

I've been having the same problem lately.  I tried the solution of disabling the firewall, and tried it again.  I'm still getting the same problem still.  The Volume shadow copy service was in the automatic mode already due to trying to fix this problem a couple of months ago.

I have noticed that as long as I get the error, then Internet Explorer and all of the Office suite works just fine, unitl I have to reboot for some reason.  I get the problem after microsoft pushes an automatic update to my system, which I have on automatic to keep the system updated.  I almost pray for the error because then I know that everything will work.

Summary:  If my system gets an update and reboots, then I can't run IE or Office.  I have to restore back about two restore points to get it the error, then IE and Office will work again.

Has there been any updates to this problem??  I did get a reply to the problem earlier, but I did NOT understand the instructions.  Here is the instructions I recceived:

I would like to suggest that you check if the following two

services are disabled in the Windows server.

    Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider

    COM+ System Application

If they are disabled, please try to enable and start the service. Then try to backup again.

Please also check if the COM+ Class Registration Database is located in %systemroot%\registration directory. You can also check the Distributed COM Programs on this server comparing other server without problem. You can use Q323287. You can also check the Distributed COM

The folder was empty, but I could restore a file called ComRegDb.bak which has the server installation date.

    1. create a folder %systemroot%\Repair\Backup\BootableSystemState\Registry
    2. create empty file %systemroot%\Repair\Backup\BootableSystemState\Registry\test.txt

This does not work for me.  it just repeats with error message "the computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error.  windows installation cannot proceed.  to install windows, click "ok" to restart the computer, and then restart the installation."

The restoredisks do not read, nor does the operation system disk.  it wilkl not go back to windows desktop, even in safemode.

What can i do to fix?
