I have Windows11 23H2 and kb5035942 will not install it keeps saying something went wrong and no worries we are undoing the install? I have tried to install manually and it says it is already installed but the update notification still remains and say a restart is required. I have tried so many ways to fix the problem I'm about to turn off updates can you help?

Check AntiVirus logs, as this update also failed in our environment and coincided with an Anti VIrus Detection: Gateway Anti-Virus Alert: Sality.AN.gen (Trojan) blocked. We are still investigating but it is likely a false positive.

    Hi Margaret,

I want to add some more information if you're interested.

KB5035942 is a preview update, which means it's a non-security/optional update. You can skip it without any problems.

On the Windows Update page in Settings, disable the option "Get the latest updates as soon as they're available." This will ensure that your Device is not offered Preview updates.

    Reboot.

If the Preview update KB5035942 continues appearing on the Windows Update page, you can block that particular update using the Microsoft troubleshooter diagcab tool below. https://download.microsoft.com/download/f/2/2/f22d5fdb-59cd-4275-8c95-1be17bf70b21/wushowhide.diagcab

Download and run the "wushowhide.diagcab" tool:

    Click Next.

    Click "Hide updates".

On the next screen, select the KB5035942 update, click Next and finish the process.

Please delete or rename the folder C:$WinREAgent, and attempt to install the update again. Note that $WinREAgent is a hidden folder.

If that doesn't help, upload your CBS logs to OneDrive and share the link here.

    • c:\windows\logs\cbs\                   <= Zip and upload all files in this folder.

    Hi Ramesh,

    Thank you for your reply.

As I'm computer illiterate I'm not sure if I did the rename correctly. I renamed the manual download to $WinREAgent but it would not accept c:/ it changed to C$WinREAgent as with the update it downloaded but with the following message on the install

Something didn't go as planned no need to worry undoing changes.

I don't know what CBS logs are and don't use OneDrive, I'm elderly and have enough trouble keeping track of my PC as it is.

    Hi Margaret,

The error "Something didn't go as planned no need to worry undoing changes" occurs for several reasons. The CBS logs tell you what exactly went wrong.

    • Open the folder "c:\windows\logs\cbs"
    • Copy all files in that folder to a temporary folder on your desktop.
    • Zip the temporary folder on your desktop and share it.

If you don't use OneDrive, try WeTransfer.com or a similar web host. If possible, have a friend assist you in uploading the logs.
