In SharePoint 2013, a new search web part named Refinement is introduced, which helps in...

In SharePoint 2013, a new search web part named Refinement is introduced, which helps in narrowing down the search results. It contains a set of refiners using which one can further narrow down the search results. In this article, we will look into how managed metadata columns can be used as refiners.

Lets assume that, we have a document library which have the following managed metadata columns. The library has few documents in it with the columns having their corresponding values.

When search performs full crawl on this library, it generates a crawled property for each of the managed metadata columns and then maps it to a managed property. Crawled property for site columns are always prefixed with ows_ and the spaces in site column name are encoded as _x0020_.

Click on search in 'SharePoint admin center' and then click on 'Search Schema' to work with managed and crawled properties.

Lets, look at one of the column, say 'Business Unit'. SharePoint search generates the following crawled properties for it.

Crawled Property Name Mapped To Managed Property

ows_Business_x0020_Unit               -       (Not Mapped)

ows_taxId_Business_x0020_Unit     -       owstaxIdBusinessx0020xUnit

The crawled property of our interest here is ows_Business_x0020_Unit since it returns one of the values (text) for the column 'Business Unit' like 'Finance' and 'Marketing'.

However, it is not mapped to any managed property by default. So, in order to use this crawled property, we will have to map it to a managed property. Now, there are a set managed properties which are available as a refiner but are not mapped to any crawled property. We will use one of them for our purpose. Please find them below in the table.

Managed Property

Data Type

RefinableDate00 - RefinableDate19

Date

RefinableDecimal00 - RefinableDecimal09

Decimal

RefinableDouble00 - RefinableDouble09

Double

RefinableInt00 - RefinableInt49

Integer

RefinableString00 - RefinableString99

String

The data type denotes the type of value the managed property can map to.

Since, column 'Business Unit' has values of type text (string), so we will map its crawled property - ows_Business_x0020_Unit to one of the RefinableString managed property, say RefinableString04.

Similarly, we do mapping for remaining columns.

    Column Name Crawled Property Managed Property

1. Business Unit           -             ows_Business_x0020_Unit         -               RefinableString04

Remember to mark each of these managed properties as - Queryable, Retrievable and most importantly Refinable in the Edit Manage Property page.

After creating above mappings, add a search refinement panel in the search results page. Edit the refinement web part and then click on 'Choose Refiners...' button.

It will open a pop-up as shown below, in which Add the above managed properties from the list of 'Available refiners' into the list of 'Selected refiners'. Mention a 'Display Name' and select a 'Display template' for each of the selected refiner.

Lets say for column 'Business Unit', we have refiner RefinableString04. we give 'Business Unit' as its 'Display Name' and select 'Multi-valued Refinement Item' as its 'Display template' .

In SharePoint, Announcements list is used to display news items and other short bits of...

In SharePoint, Announcements list is used to display news items and other short bits of information related to important activities or events. So, instead of sending mails to site members to share such information, one can post the same by adding an Announcements list app to the site. An Announcements list contains the following columns :- Title, Body, Expires, Created By, and Modified By. Tiltle column is a mandatory column so one cannot remove it.

The 'All Items' view in an Announcements list app displays all items in the list in groups of 30 ordered by their creation date. Now, one may want to add a rotating visual effect to the list by displaying only one item at a time for a very short duration. In order to achieve this visual effect, one need to first render the list items in a such as way so that it would be easier at later stage to rotate these items.

To render the list items in a custom way, one can use the JS Link property of the Announcement list webpart under Miscellaneous section as shown below. The JS Link property is used to refer an external JavaScript file to render the list items in the current view.

Add a JavaScript file to the SharePoint site and gives its path in the JS Link property. The JavaScript file will contain code, to render the Announcement list items, as shown below.

(function () {
    /*
     * Initialize the variable that store the overrides objects.
     */
var overrideCtx = {};
overrideCtx.Templates = {};

// Assign functions or plain html strings to the Announcement list templateset objects: list header, footer and item.
overrideCtx.Templates.Header = "

";
overrideCtx.Templates.Footer = "
";

// This Announcement list template is assigned to the CustomItem function.
overrideCtx.Templates.Item = CustomItem;
overrideCtx.BaseViewID = 1;

// 104 stands for Announcement List type
overrideCtx.ListTemplateType = 104;

// Register the template overrides.

SPClientTemplates.TemplateManager.RegisterTemplateOverrides(overrideCtx);

})();

/*
* This function builds the output for the Announcement list item template.
* Uses the Context object to access Announcement list data.
*/

function CustomItem(ctx) {

// Build a listitem entry for every announcement in the list.
var ret = "

" + ctx.CurrentItem.Title + "

" + ctx.CurrentItem.Body + "
";

return ret;

}

The above JavaScript file will generate HTML markup for the Announcement list in the following manner:

Item1 Title goes here

Item1 Body goes here

Item2 Title goes here

Item2 Body goes here

Item3 Title goes here

Item3 Body goes here

Now, in order to rotate the list items, one need to add the Script Editor WebPart to the page. It will contain a JavaScript code for rotating the Announcement list items as shown below:

$(function () {

// GeNowt all items from list

var listItems = $(".divAnnouncementList");
listLen = listItems.length;
var currentItem= 0;

// Fade Out all items except the first one

for( var j=1;  j<listLen;  j++ ) {
$(".divListItem").eq(j).fadeOut(100);
}

// Fade Out and Fade In all items in list one by one
var infiniteLoop = setInterval( function() {
$(".divListItem").eq(currentItem).fadeOut(100);
if(currentItem == listLen-1) {

currentItem = 0;

}
else {

currentItem++;

}

$(".divListItem").eq(currentItem).fadeIn(500);
}, 10000);

});

In this way, one can achieve the rotation of items in Announcement List.
