Hi All,

I aim to achieve three things with this post, i.e. to demonstrate
1. How we can execute a test job in AX7 which most of us already know in the good old AX 2012 as an AOT Node.

2. Use of like operator in AX uses asterik '*' for wildcards instead of '%' which we use in SQL

3. Changing Layouts of Retail Screens need not be tedious and time consuming by changing properties of each button manually.

Hi All,

I recently had to add a Blank Operation to Modern POS (MPOS) to open a url from MPOS.

Blank Operation as you may already be aware enable you to extend Microsoft Dynamics Retail for POS by adding custom logic that can be triggered from the Retail POS Register buttons. The way to implement Blank Operations in MPOS is different from Enterprise POS as MPOS is a modern app as compared to EPOS which is a windows forms based app.

So lets explore a very simple customization i.e. we want to open a URL on triggering a button from MPOS.

1. We would need to start with AX to add a button to the layout of MPOS. If you do not want to disturb the standard layouts its better to copy one of the existing layouts and then modify it using the designer. Please note the designer only opens in Internet Explorer so it will save you time by not trying to open it in other browsers e.g Chrome

I noticed that i was unable to access enterprise portal and some other websites in the latest AX 2012 VM I downloaded.

To resolve the access issues I had to add some IPs to the Hyper-V internal network adapter in the VM. In case you are not familiar with internal and external network adapters, let me take you through a quick introduction on the same. If you are familiar with these you can skip the below section and check the IP configurations required-

In Hyper-V virtual switch manager there are 2 types of network adapters you can create

1. Internal - For enabling communication between the host (your physical machine) and the VM (also referred as guest mc)

2. External - For enabling communication of your VM with the internet access provided to your host machine.

Create an internal network adapter and an external network adapter on your host machine. Refer below screen shot

Next step is to assign these adapters to your VM. You might need to create network adapters in the VM settings, but this can be done only if the VM is shut down. Refer below screenshot.

Once this is done we need to configure the network adapters in the host machine as well as the VM.

So what a day, spent about half my weekend trying to install AX 2012 reporting services extension installed on my machine which had SQL Server 2008 R2 with SP2.

The trouble started when I found out that AX 2012 Reporting Server Extensions (RSE) cannot be installed on SSRS in SharePoint Integrated Mode.

The solution was simple to use reporting services configuration manager and recreate reporting databases in native mode.

However I wasn't aware I had this option till I spoke to my colleague (after I had already uninstalled SSRS from my VM - argh). I then installed Reporting Services however it was not patched with SP1 and SP2.

So AX installer recommended me to install Sql Server 2008 R2 CU3. However this did not work for me as I got a message saying that no instances or shared components found upgradeable.

I am trying to collate learning resources for Dynamics AX 2012 and thought i will collect them in this post which could be useful for a wider audience

1. Books - There are many books on AX 2012 but this is one that I recommend to start with Inside Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012.

Read more about it at https://blogs.msdn.com/b/microsoft_press/archive/2012/10/25/new-book-inside-microsoft-dynamics-ax-2012.aspx

2. MSDN - it is one of the best source for all content and can be your starting point for learning AX

Functional Starting Point- Introduction to Microsoft Dynamics AX functionality

Technical - Microsoft Dynamics AX Developer Center

Especially refer the How Do I videos section of the above URL.

3. InformationSource - If you have access to InformationSource https://informationsource.dynamics.com/ which is currently available to selected customers/partners, it is certainly a good source for learning more about AX

4. Blogs List- There are a number of blogs available on the web. A list of some are available at this link- https://community.dynamics.com/product/ax/p/allBlogs.aspx

5. Microsoft Download Center - This portal provides Guides/White Papers/References on AX (https://www.microsoft.com/en-in/download/search.aspx?q=ax+2012

If you feel that a certain resource should definitely be included in this post feel free to drop in a comment about the same.

I will be posting on more specific issues/features on AX in my future posts
