Why does this happen?

Earlier installation of Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 on the server did not complete successfully, leaving some of the IIS .dlls at the Service Pack 1 level while bringing others up to the Service Pack 2 level.  The IIS services had been able to run successfully even with that file mismatch in place.  However, the installation of the KB973917 update exposes this pre-existing file mismatch environment to the degree that IIS is now unable to function properly.

How to fix it?

First of all open your inetsrv folder ‘run>inetsrv’ check for version of dll such as iisadmin.dll, w3core.dll.

If you are on 2003 Sp2 and see the file version anything less than 3959 (last four digits) then you might be the victim.

To be extra sure check your event logs to see if you are logging the following events in system log,


      Event Type: Warning

      Event Source: W3SVC

      Event Category: None

      Event ID: 1009

      Date:  12/9/2009

      Time:  10:55:01 AM

      User:  N/A

      Computer: WEBSERVER01

      Description:

      A process serving application pool 'DefaultAppPool' terminated unexpectedly. The process id was '1234'.

      The process exit code was '0xffffffff'

 

 

If yes reinstall SP2. This will replace older dll in inetsrv with the latest versions.

Why this might happen?

This might happen if the update panel is places inside a table and has a row of the table inside it.

E.g.

Simple way to fix or avoid this situation is to place the Update panel outside the table.

Why does this happen?

The site is added to one of the zones (Internet,Trusted sites, Restricted sites) in IE. And in IE settings Tools ->Internet Options -> Security -> <Zone>  -> Custom level -> user authentication -> Logon is set to ‘Automatic Logon only in Intranet zone’. Due to this configuration, IE would not pass the logged on users credentials to visual studio. So Visual Studio is not able to copy files to temporary ASP.NET files folder.

How to fix it?

Change the security settings for IE Tools ->Internet Options -> Security -> <Zone> -> Custom level ->user authentication ->Logon and make it ‘Automatic Logon with current user name and password’.

This code fails to list the extended properties such as dimensions, width, height for an image file such as jpg, jpeg, gif.

How to fix this problem?

You will have to modified the registry to fix this issue.

Copy the below lines, paste them in a text file and save the file as .reg file. Use this file to add the appropriate key in the registry. You can also manually add the registry key,

When you use IISReset command with /NOFORCE switch you are saying that do not forcefully terminate Internet services if attempting to stop them gracefully fails. This is useful, as it help prevent data loss in case the IIS services cannot be stopped within the one minute time-out period. But if you have set up Exchange server along with SharePoint websites you might run into errors using /NOFORCE switch.

E.g.

Why does this happen?

This happens because; NOFORCE switch fails to stop the IIS services in a timely fashion. This issue occurs in situations where we have more than 5 services dependent on IISAdmin service.

It is recommended to use net stop w3svc and net start w3svc commands to do a complete IISReset. This ensures that you only restart IIS services and not other services such as Exchange Services, SharePoint Services that are dependent on IISAdmin. Net start stop will work in the same way even if the number of services dependent on IISAdmin service increases.
