One of the great things about PowerApps is that every month it gets better and better with more capabilities in the platform as well as new connectors that provide more flexibility connecting to SaaS services. Last month one of such connectors was the MSN Weather that gives you the ability to read the current weather on a specific location, or even the forecast for tomorrow and others.

MSN Weather API

While I don’t think you want to build the next Weather App (there are plenty out there), having the capability of incorporating weather information to your application and correlate to any other data on it is very powerful, whether for planning purposes, delivery, travel plans, or scheduling, or others it can save your users from having to go to multiple places. In addition, with Microsoft Flow you could setup some automated tasks that trigger when the weather changes, and such.

MSN Weather Connector actions supported in PowerApps

What we will be building

For this quick sample we will be creating the following application using PowerApps that allow you to enter a location in the Input box and will provide you the weather, conditions, pressure, and other information. It also allows you to use the current location to get the weather for it. We currently do not have a reverse geocoding API but the MSN Weather API allows you to provide the Location in coordinates. Of course like all other PowerApps, this application will run in iOS (iPhone, iPad), Android, Windows Phone, Web, and Windows Desktop which makes it extremely powerful and all of this in less than five minutes.

Building the Weather App

At a high level the strategy we will use since we want to have the user click the “Search button” as an explicit action, we’ll store the result of calling MSNWeather.CurrentWeather in the OnSelect of the Search button into a context variable that then we’ll use to display in all the other controls. We’ll add another icon to set the current location coordinates. That’s it… nothing else needed.

In Windows, launch PowerApps

We’ll initialize the default location when first launching the app, for that: on the Screen set the following properties:

OnVisible = UpdateContext({LastLocation: "Redmond, WA"})

We’ll add the “set the current location” button, for that: Add an Icon (I used the “Map”) icon for simplicity and set the following properties:

OnSelect = UpdateContext({LastLocation: Location.Latitude & ", " & Location.Longitude})

We’ll load the last location as a default for the textbox: Add a new Text Input control and set the following properties

Default = LastLocation

HintText = "Enter location"

Add the “Units” radio group, for that add a Radio control with the following properties:

Items = ["Imperial", "Metric"]

Default = "Imperial"

We’ll add the Search button, for that:

OnSelect = UpdateContext({Weather: MSNWeather.CurrentWeather(TextInput1.Text, Radio1.Selected.Value)})

Finally add all the controls to visualize the data, I used the following:

Temperature: Weather.responses.weather.current.temp & " " & Weather.units.temperature

Conditions: Weather.responses.weather.current.cap

Pressure: Weather.responses.weather.current.baro & " " & Weather.units.pressure

UV Index: Weather.responses.weather.current.uv & " " & Weather.responses.weather.current.uvDesc

Dew Point: Weather.responses.weather.current.dewPt & " o"

Humidity: Weather.responses.weather.current.rh & " %"

Sky: Weather.responses.weather.current.sky

Wind: Weather.responses.weather.current.windSpd & " " & Weather.units.speed

Visibility: Weather.responses.weather.current.vis

Last Updated: Text(DateTimeValue(Weather.responses.weather.current.created), DateTimeFormat.ShortDateTime)

Coordinates: Weather.responses.source.coordinates.lat & ", " & Weather.responses.source.coordinates.lon

Open in Browser: Launch(Launch(Weather.responses.source.clickThrough))

Anyway, hopefully this shows how easy it is to add a data source to PowerApps.
One of the very powerful capabilities in PowerApps is that you can easily build applications that incorporate data from many data sources. Included with PowerApps are dozens and dozens of connectors, however at times it is hard to quickly know all the options that you have available to create these applications and what the data is coming from. We are continuosly imprivng the documentation and samples that we have but I figure I could share a draft of some documentation so you can share ideas on how to improve it and what would you like to see.

[Update] Now updated to include Triggers supported for Microsoft Flow.

[Update 2016-11-30 - Updated to include GoToMeeting and FreshDesk]

[Update 2017-01-05 - Updated to include Buffer, DocuSign, GoToTraining, Harvest, OneNote, SurveyMonkey and TypeForm.] Also now available the Spanish draft.

[Update 2017-02-09 - Updated to include BitBucket, DB2, Eventbrite, File System, Gmail, GoToWebinar, HelloSign, Informix, LUIS, Outlook Tasks, Stripe, UserVoices.]

In the previous blog I wrote how easy it is to use an Azure Function as a Custom API for PowerApps,...

In the previous blog I wrote how easy it is to use an Azure Function as a Custom API for PowerApps, and got a question on how would that look like for Microsoft Flow. The great news is that if you have followed the first three steps in the previous blog, you are done! PowerApps and Microsoft Flow share the same connector infrastructure which means your connector will work for PowerApps and Microsoft Flow automatically.

To use that just:

Go to https://flow.microsoft.com/

Click My Flows

Click Create from blank

In this case I will create a very simple flow that runs every hour and that emails me the output of the Azure Function that we created for PowerApps. Notice how as you start typing in the flow designer it will auto complete and find your new Azure Function Custom API:

After selecting that, it will correctly understand the Swagger definition and the input and output parameters and correctly allow you to enter the values, and even cascade and reuse the output results from the function for any other step/action in the flow as below using it as part of the body of the email to be sent.

Summary

One of the great things you get with the new Microsoft Flow and PowerApps is the great story they have to integrate with each other, and the fact that both “speak Swagger” allows you to build a Custom API once and reuse in both. Note that authoring triggers is a bit more work where you need to annotate the Swagger appropriately as well as have a different signature for your APIs so I will leave that for a future post.

In this blog I want to show how easy is to use the newly introduced Azure Functions from a PowerApps. Azure Functions provides a very convenient and easy way to develop custom logic called Functions that runs in the cloud and without the need to worry about the hosting solution at all. You can do things like processing data, integrating with other systems such as storage, queues and many other features on your favorite language C#, Node.JS, Python and more.

PowerApps provides a very convenient and simple way to create business mobile applications without the need to write any code that run on iOS, Android, Windows and Web, that allows you to easily integrate with many SaaS providers such as SharePoint, Dropbox, Google Drive, Facebook, OneDrive, Salesforce, Dynamics and many more, however, in some cases you might need to write some custom logic on the server-side to do some further processing. In this example I’ll show you how you can extend PowerApps to call an Azure Function.

To use an Azure Function from a PowerApp there are four simple steps

Create the Azure Function

Define the REST signature using Swagger

Add a Custom API in PowerApps

Use the new Custom API from a PowerApp

Creating the Azure Function

The first step is to create the Azure Function, for that just:

Go to https://functions.azure.com/ and click Get Started.

On that page, enter a name and a location for your new Azure Function, in my case I'm using Name:azurefn and Region: West US

Click Create + get started. This will take you to the Azure Portal where you can then choose the scenario, in this case use Webhook + API and I’ll be using C# for this example.

In this case I’ll leave the default code since that returns “Hello” + the name provided as a parameter in the query string, so you should see something like the following image.

At this point our Azure Function is done and you can run it using the Run button at the bottom of the page, or even call it passing the right “code” parameter provided, such as: https://azurefn.azurewebsites.net/api/HttpTriggerCSharp1?name=Carlos&code=h6zt…your-code-here…i

Creating the Swagger to describe the Azure Function REST API

There are a few editors that can help you create your swagger such as https://editor.swagger.io/, however in this case it is a very simple REST API that only receives a “name” query string parameter, and the code to be able to call the API, so I just went and defined it in a JSON as below. Note that I used the title MyAzureFunction which is the way I will refer to inside PowerApps, and I called the operationId RunThis which will be name of the formula. You can use the example below as a starting point, just edit the “Host” to match your site, and the paths as needed.

{
"swagger": "2.0",
"info": {
"version": "1.0.0",
"title": "MyAzureFunction"
},
"host": "azurefn.azurewebsites.net",
"paths": {
"/api/HttpTriggerCSharp1": {
"get": {
"description": "Calls my azure function over https",
"operationId": "RunThis",
"parameters": [
{
"name": "code",
"in": "query",
"description": "code",
"default": "h6ztu…[your code here]…i",
"type": "string"
},
{
"name": "name",
"in": "query",
"required": true,
"type": "string"
}
],
"responses": {
"200": {
"description": "Successful response",
"schema": {
"title": "The response of the api.",
"type": "string"
}
}
}
}
}
}
}

Adding a custom API in PowerApps

To register a custom API in PowerApps simply navigate to https://web.powerapps.com/#/connections/available/custom/create

(or click Manage->Connections->New Connection->Custom->New Custom API … hurray for deep linking).

Click Next and Create.

Using the new Custom API from a PowerApp

To use the newly created Custom API, just:

Launch PowerApps Studio

Create a new PowerApp, in my case I used New –>Blank App –>Phone Layout

Go to the Content option in the ribbon and click DataSources.

In the Data sources panel click the “Add data source” button, click “+ Add Connection”, and select your Custom API.

Once you have added it to the PowerApp you will get Intellisense for it, in my case I called it MyAzureFunction and RunThis, and as you can see in the image below it even gives me the description and the parameter name, in this case “name”.

When you run the PowerApp, and you type any values in the TextInput you will see how it automatically tracks the changes and evaluates the formula which will magically perform the right HTTP REST API call to App Service executing our Azure Function and returning the concatenation “Hello ” + name provided.

Summary

In this simple example I show you how easy it is to add any HTTP API to a PowerApp, in our case we used the simplest Azure Function that returns “Hello “ + the value provided in the “name” query string parameter. Of course at this point you can now extend as you want the azure function to do much more interesting things like calculations, data gathering, integration to external systems, and more.

One final note: It is worth calling out is that one thing to consider is authentication, with this approach the "code" that is used to authorize is actually coming to clients which is not ideal if your API is not something you want to allow. For example using Fiddler someone could see the code and reuse. PowerApps supports protecting Custom APIs using Azure Active Directory and basic authentication but I'll keep that for a later post.

Logic Apps has built-in functionality to allow organizing and splitting your workflows in small...

Logic Apps has built-in functionality to allow organizing and splitting your workflows in small manageable units that can then be invoked from another workflow. At this moment that functionality is not exposed through the User Interface, but it is still possible to do that.

The high level steps to enable that is to:

Create the Child Logic App that will be invoked by the parent logic app and any logic to it.

Create an Access Key in the Child Logic App so that the Parent Logic App can use that as the user name and password to invoke it.

Create the Parent Logic App that uses an action of type “Workflow” and specify the Basic Credentials with the access keys created above.

That is all…

Now the biggest challenge right now is that the User Interface does not currently support managing Access Keys for flows as well as adding an Action for it, so we will be using the great ARMClient that David Ebbo built to do that easily through command line.

Create a Child Logic App

Here you can build any logic app the way you would like, in my case I called the Resource Group “logicNewRG”. The most important thing here is to Copy the full URL of the Endpoint since you will be using that to invoke this workflow from the Parent Logic App. You can do that in the Blade that shows the Endpoint, in my case since I deployed it to North Central US it looks something like: https://northcentralus.logic.azure.com/subscriptions/049c02d1-000-0000-0000-0000000/resourceGroups/logicNewRG/providers/Microsoft.Logic/workflows/ChildLogicApp

<img title="image" style="border-left-width: 0px;

Create an Access Key for the Logic App

This is the most complicated part today since there is currently no support for the UI to manage the access keys, however it is simple enough to do that through command line.

Install ARM Client: Using Chocolatey it is very easy to install ARM Client, you can just run: choco install armclient

Once you do that you can run the following:

List the Subscriptions
armclient GET /subscriptions?api-version=2014-04-01
set SUB=/subscriptions/049c02d1....e734c

Create the Access Key sending a PUT and use a POST to list the generated keys
armclient PUT %SUB%/resourceGroups/logicNewRG/providers/Microsoft.Logic/workflows/ChildLogicApp/accessKeys/mykey?api-version=2015-02-01-preview "{}"

armclient POST %SUB%/resourceGroups/logicNewRG/providers/Microsoft.Logic/workflows/ChildLogicApp/accessKeys/mykey/list?api-version=2015-02-01-preview

And that will return the actual keys: (note that there are two so you can rollover your keys and have no downtime easily):

{
