Service accounts password change in SharePoint 2010 is a pain. Especially, if you follow the...

Service accounts password change in SharePoint 2010 is a pain. Especially, if you follow the recommended best practices to have dedicated accounts for different services. I have gone through several rounds of the service account password change and have found the steps that work for me. First, you have to understand that not all service account password can be managed from the SharePoint 2010 "Configure managed accounts" page. There are some accounts that you have to perform extra steps after you change the password in AD.

Managed Accounts

These are the accounts that you can just use the "Configure managed accounts" page in SharePoint 2010 Central Administration to change the password and be done. I normally don't even need to know the passwords of these accounts. I also set automatic password change for these accounts. Please note that I am purposely excluding the Farm Account from this group.

The accounts in this group are:

Web application pool service account(s)

SharePoint search service account(s) (but not the content access account(s))

SharePoint foundation search service account (but not the content access account)

User profile service account (but not the user profile synchronization connection or the user profile synchronization service accounts)

Managed metadata service account

Web analytic service account

Secure store service account

BDC service account

Excel services account (but not the Excel unattended execution account)

PerformancePoint service account (but not the PerformancePoint unattended execution account)

Visio service account (but not the Visio unattended execution account)

PowerPoint service account

Word viewing service account

Excel PowerPivot service account

These accounts will be in the list of your managed accounts in Central Admin. Again, you can just set the passwords of these accounts directly from Central Admin and be done.

Unmanaged Accounts

These are the accounts that you must perform extra steps after you have changed their password in Active Directory. The service accounts in this list are:

User Profile Synchronization Service account

User Profile Synchronization Connection account

SharePoint Server Search default content access account and Content Access accounts defined in the crawl rules.

SharePoint Foundation Search default content access account

Unattended execution accounts (Excel, Visio, PerformancePoint)

Object cache super user and object cache reader accounts

Perform the steps below to change the passwords of these accounts.

1. Change the passwords of these accounts in AD. You will need to note down the passwords of these account because you will need to enter them into various places in SharePoint.

2. User Profile Synchronization Service account

2.1. Please skip to the Farm Account section (below) if you are using the Farm Account as the User Profile Synchronization Service credentials.

2.2. Bring up Central Admin.

2.3. Click "Manage services on server" under "System Settings."

5.6. Repeat these steps if you have Foundation Search service running on more than one server.

6. Unattended Execution Accounts (Excel Unattended and Visio Unattended)

8. Object Cache Super User and Object Cache Reader accounts

8.1. You don't need to do anything in SharePoint after the passwords of these accounts are changed in AD.

Farm Account

I listed the Farm Account in a separate section although it is a SharePoint managed account.   I found that using stsadm command in PowerShell works a whole lot better for the Farm Account.   Also, most people use the Farm Account as the User Profile Synchronization Service credential.  And the UPSS account is an unmanaged account.  To change the Farm Account password;

1. Change the Farm Account password in AD. Note down the new password.

2. Logon to the SharePoint server that hosts the Central Administration site.

I recently ran into a problem with User Profile Synchronization in SharePoint 2010. All properties (except one) were downloaded from Active Directory correctly. However, the manager property was missing for everyone and the domain name of each user is wrong. It turned out that the problem was because the domain NetBIOS name was different from the fully qualified domain name in my deployment. For example, FQDN = ABC.com while NetBIOS name = AbcCorp.

There will be 2 things that you need to do extra in this situation.

Enable NetBIOS Domain Name on the User Profile Service Application

1. Logon to a SharePoint server.

2. Launch SharePoint Management Shell as admin.

3. Run the following commands

Get-SPServiceApplication

<Note down the GUID of the User Profile Service Application>

$service = Get-SpServiceApplication -Identity <Guid of the UPS>

$service.NetBiosDomainNamesEnabled = 1

$service.Update()

Grant Replicated Directory Changes permission to the synchronization connection account on the Active Directory Configuration Naming Container

1. This is in addition to the permission on the root domain that you normally have to set up.

2. Launch ADSI edit

3. Right click ADSI Edit (at the root) and choose "Connect to."

I recently had to recreate the User Profile Service in my SharePoint 2010 test farm due to a bad...

I recently had to recreate the User Profile Service in my SharePoint 2010 test farm due to a bad PowerShell script to add permissions to the USP. The USP was hosed. I was getting an invalid claim error when calling Get-SPServiceApplicationSecurity or when clicking on the Permission button in Central Admin. So I decided to recreate the USP to retain the existing profile data (90,000 users), synchronization filters and the managed metadata hookups. I was successful in doing so. Here are the steps I took:

Log in to the server that is hosting the User Profile Synchronization Service. Launch command prompt as administrator. Change directory to \Program Files\Microsoft Office Server\14.0\Synchronization Service\Bin. Backup the MIIS encryption key by running miiskmu.exe /e <Key file name and path>. Please note that you may have to log in as the farm account when doing this (you will need to add the farm account back in the Local Administrator group anyway to reproision the synchronization service).

Backup the Profile, Social and Sync databases.

Stop the User Profile Service.

Delete the user profile service application by either PowerShell or via Central Admin. Do not choose the option to delete data.

Delete the Sync database.

Create the user profile service application with the same database names.

Restore the Sync database backup over the one that was just automatically created.

Log in to the server that was running the User Profile Synchronization Service. Launch command prompt as admin. Navigate to the same place as above. Run miiskmu.exe /i <Key file name> {0E19E162-827E-4077-82D4-E6ABD531636E}. Again, you may have to login as the farm account.

Start the User Profile and User Profile Synchronization services. Again, the User Profile Synchronization Service may take some time to start up. Note: I had to restart the server one time after waiting 30 min+ on the first.

Check Central Admin to see whether the profiles are still there and whether the synchronization connections are still there. If the synchronization connections disappear, try restarting the FIM Connection Manager service.

Test the synchronization service by running an incremental import.

Reassign the administrators and permissions (content access account, web application pools in remote farms, etc.)

Office Web Apps caches the rendered office documents to the server physical local drives before propragating them to the site collection cache. Office Web Apps will write the cached files to the system temp directory. The default system temp location is C:\Windows\Temp. If your C:\drive is small or you wish to move the cache location, you can try the procedures below. Please note that the procedures below will change the system temp directory. Careful considerations should be made prior to executing the procedures. Please also note that these procedures were tested in only one environment and I cannot guarantee that they will work in all environments.

In SharePoint Central Administration, delete the instances of Word Viewing Service and PowerPoint Service Applications in the Manage Service Applications page.

In SharePoint Central Administration, stop Word Viewing Service and PowerPoint Servie Application in Manage Servies on Server page.

Browse to [Your Web Application root url]/sites/Office_Viewing_Service_Cache. Delete all files from the "cache" document library. Repeat this step for all your web applications.

Log into the server. Delete everything under C:\Windows\Temp\powerpointcache and C:\Windows\Temp\waccache

Create the new Windows temp directory. E.g., D:\Windows\Temp.

Replicate all permission settings from the old Temp directory to the new Temp directory.

Change the TEMP and TMP system environment variables to the new Temp directory (right click on Computer --> Properties --> Advanced system settings --> Environment Variables)

Restart the OWA server

PowerPoint Service Application (answer "Y" for each command)
