I like to watch DVD’s on my laptop! I can’t possibly work all of the time, and so when I need a break a good DVD is often the way to go. I was watching a DVD on a recent flight when the man sitting next to me asked where I got a laptop with such an amazing picture quality. I smiled because it is really just a standard Lenovo W510. I did however do some additional work to the display with a free tool that comes with Windows 7 which relatively few seem to know or care about.

The tool is called the Display Color Calibration Wizard, or DCCW for short. You can run this tool by going to the pearl (new lingo for the start button) and typing DCCW in the search box. Start the DCCW tool and we are under way. I will walk you through the process lest you think it is difficult or somehow otherwise prohibitive and then you too can watch your own DVD’s on a display that you have taken the opportunity to customize to your liking.

First you will see the splash screen for the tool indicating that you should move the window onto the display that you are going to calibrate. Not rocket science so far.

Go ahead and click NEXT

The screen indicates that if you display has a menu option that will allow the setting to be returned to factory defaults please do so now. If you don’t have a menu option for this (Like say on most laptops) just go ahead and click NEXT

Now we are going to work on the Gamma Adjustment for the display. If you are wondering what you are going for there is an example of the desired outcome on the center of the screen along with 2 examples of what not to do.
I gave a talk to a group of teens and their parents several years ago that was entitled Why...

I gave a talk to a group of teens and their parents several years ago that was entitled Why doesn’t Guitar Hero actually teach you to play Guitar. At the time Guitar Hero was all the rage and it seemed that every kid was playing it (too much according to their parents.) I have always loved video games and Guitar Hero was no different. I played for hours learning some of my favorite tunes and feeling, frankly, like a rock star. The game was creative genius! A normal guy like me was catapulted from zero to superstardom in the time it took to figure out which of my fingers were supposed to push the red, green, yellow, or blue buttons in rhythm to the music. The guitar shaped controller added to the fantasy, while the game built the experience of the audience beautifully! I really felt like a rock star! And that is the point of the game. Supplant the reality of hundreds of hours of practice to learn to play the guitar, and jump right to the euphoric feelings of being a great musician. The strange part for me was that anyone who was any good at guitar hero played it for hundreds of hours. Literally putting in the time necessary to build the real skills of playing a real guitar. But they didn’t! Some got so good at Guitar Hero that playing the controller became an art unto itself.

I know kids lean fast but how long does it take to learn to do that. Amazing!

So I’m reading through All Things D this morning and I see this sidebar video about a company called Instinct that has built a web application that runs entirely through the browser and teaches you how to play the guitar. I haven’t tried the application yet but my assumption is that this is going to be a lot like the traditional method of hundreds of hours of practice to become really proficient at playing the guitar. I am hoping that Blake and Brian have learned the lesson of Guitar Hero and will build and interface that satisfies all of our needs to be lauded far beyond the actual reaches of or accomplishments. For example when I finally do get the easy version of Mary had a little lamb out it would be nice if the on screen graphics showed a wowed audience cheering my success as though I had just learned Eddie Van Halen's Eruption. I think this is how you keep people coming back for more. No one wants to be motivated by pain and suffering. We all want to hear the positive feedback of our screaming fans, get fan mail on our Facebook pages and hear our twitter tag mentioned and then retweeted. The technology is already in place to make this a reality. Check out the video.

If I were building a web application to teach kids (we are all kids at heart) how to play guitar I would build the app like guitar hero. Avatars and all. Build the fantasy in deep. Make sure the audience is there wanting more. The teacher has to be your biggest fan, in fact they should probably lead your fan club. the app has to integrate with Facebook. Each time you reach an accomplishment it has to automatically go on you wall with a cool certificate or trophy. The app needs to integrate with twitter and automatically tweet practice hours and successful milestone events. I guess what I am saying is that perhaps its time for our applications to take a game like feel into a real world audience. We can mix fantasy and reality just fine in this world. I am very excited about the changes that are coming in applications. I have always believed that technology should make a real difference in peoples lives. Instinct is taking one of those Steps down that path. I love it!

Are you up for the Challenge?

If you answered yes, and if you are you a student, and you can answer a question like this then you’re ready for Round 1 of the Imagine Cup 2012 IT Challenge:

You are the administrator for the company network. You are bringing a new remote office online. The office has a domain controller that also runs DNS and WINS. It also has a file server that runs DHCP. DHCP enabled workstations are not getting DHCP addresses as expected. What should you do?

1. Move the DHCP service to the domain controller

2. Disable WINS since it interferes with DHCP on the same network

3. Authorize the DHCP server in Active Directory

4. Enable DHCP forwarding on the workstations

Well if you can answer that (btw this is from the practice test) then you may be ready to take the test to pass round 1, Until October 20th, go take the practice exam here:

Imagine Cup 2012 IT Challenge

The IT Challenge sets out to connect with students around the world who have the brainpower, interest, and the technical knowledge to design, run, and support enterprise infrastructures while managing diverse customer needs and scenarios. The IT Challenge puts the world's brightest IT minds to the test! In the IT Challenge, students are tasked to develop, deploy, and maintain IT systems that are efficient, functional, robust, and secure. Each competitor needs to demonstrate proficiency in the science of networks, databases, and servers and an intimate understanding of how it must all fit together, both on-premise and in the cloud. The competition is broken into 3 rounds:

o Round 1: Qualifying Quiz: During Round 1, competitors will need to complete and pass at least one (1) quiz during one of the six (6) quiz periods. The specific quiz times will be announced on the IT Challenge Competition page. The questions will test your knowledge around both on-premise Microsoft technologies such as Windows 2008 R2, Hyper-V Virtualization, Exchange 2010, SharePoint 2010, Windows 7, System Center Operations Manager 2012, System Center Configuration Manager 2012, TMG 2010, UAG 2010, SQL 2008 R2, Office 2010, Lync 2012 as well as cloud-based Microsoft services such as Office 365, Windows Azure, and SQL Azure. This lab will challenge the finalist competitors to build servers, server images, and configurations on a Hyper-V host server and in the Cloud to prove their practical knowledge and experience with the technologies. Competitors will be asked to set up, install, and demonstrate knowledge and expertise of Windows 2008 R2, Exchange 2010, Windows 7, Office 2010, System Center Configuration Manager 2012, System Center Operations Manager 2012, System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2012, TMG 2010, SQL 2008 R2, Lync 2010, Office 365, Windows Azure, SQL Azure, etc.

Depending on how you do there is even a potential of Final world wide round in Australia.

The IPV4 address space is exhausted! The impact is looking in the not to distant future and many of you are already deeply entrenched in transition planning for the move to IPV6. Right? …….. Right? Ed Horley is one of the biggest advocates I know around IPV6. He truly “Gets IT.” He is fond of asking audiences “How many of you are running IPV6 today?” While he patiently watches a paltry few hands go up, he smiles, then asks “And how many of you are running Windows 7?” The majority of the hands rise at this question, then Ed puts the cap on. “So you are running IPV6!”
IPV6 is here to stay! The standard is in place and the opportunity is ours to embrace it. There are some pretty significant benefits of IPV6, not the least of which includes a significantly expanded address space. If you are in IT anywhere you need to read this article for the wake up call that it is truly meant to be. Find the resources you need to get a handle on IPV6.

Read Ed’s latest article in Network World here….https://www.networkworld.com/news/2011/100511-ipv6-thought-leaders-251649.html

Great Job Ed!!

I received an email from Netflix today letting me know that
1. The price changes that went into effect for Netflix services are still in effect.

2. The customers hated the idea of Qwickster so the DVD’s will remain under the Netflix name.

Here’s a copy of the mailing.

Dear Chris,

It is clear that for many of our members two websites would make things more difficult, so we are going to keep Netflix as one place to go for streaming and DVDs.

This means no change: one website, one account, one password…in other words, no Qwikster.

While the July price change was necessary, we are now done with price changes.

We're constantly improving our streaming selection. We've recently added hundreds of movies from Paramount, Sony, Universal, Fox, Warner Bros., Lionsgate, MGM and Miramax. Plus, in the last couple of weeks alone, we've added over 3,500 TV episodes from ABC, NBC, FOX, CBS, USA, E!, Nickelodeon, Disney Channel, ABC Family, Discovery Channel, TLC, SyFy, A&E, History, and PBS.

We value you as a member, and we are committed to making Netflix the best place to get your movies & TV shows.

Respectfully,

The Netflix Team

Now here is where I think Netflix just did something exceptionally smart (and I assume they understand that it is smart) Netflix was going to move their DVD distribution business to a different brand, complete with its own website and presumably its own operations team, distribution team, etc. That’s on of the reasons to hike the price is to cover the cost of both operations. With this decision Netflix maintains brand loyalty and broadens scope of brand recognition while at the same time consolidating online operating costs to a single site. Genius! This a perfect example of how a company may benefit from a more cloud based operating model. In this example the business resources can be allocated as services to customers from a single online portal and provide maximum level of service to the customer, maximum insight to the company, and maximize the utilization of the companies resources.
