Good news again and confirmation that Microsoft toolset is the best candidate to support your ALM...

Good news again and confirmation that Microsoft toolset is the best candidate to support your ALM needs (ALM - Application Lifecycle Management)

why ALM ? (or ADLM for Application Development lifecycle management)

Time-to-market pressure is driving the application development life cycle management market to evolve and expand. This research evaluates leading ADLM providers to help application development and IT managers select appropriate technology partners that drive quality and productivity.

The application development life cycle management (ADLM) tool market is focused on the planning and governance activities of the software development life cycle (SDLC). ADLM products are focused on the "development" portion of an application's life, with the term ADLM evolving from the term application life cycle management (ALM).

Key elements of an ADLM solution include:

Software requirements definition and management

Software change and configuration management

Software project planning, with a current focus on agile planning

Work item management

Quality management, including defect management

In addition, other key capabilities include:

Reporting

Workflow

Integration to version management

Support for wikis and collaboration

Strong facilities for integration to other ADLM tools

Figure 1. Magic Quadrant for Application Development Life Cycle Management

This graphic was published by Gartner, Inc. as part of a larger research document and should be evaluated in the context of the entire document. The Gartner document is available here.
Gartner does not endorse any vendor, product or service depicted in its research publications, and does not advise technology users to select only those vendors with the highest ratings. Gartner research publications consist of the opinions of Gartner's research organization and should not be construed as statements of fact. Gartner disclaims all warranties, expressed or implied, with respect to this research, including any warranties of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose.

While this report is based on the valuable ADLM toolset we’ve delivered in Visual Studio 2012 and TFService, we’ve already raised the bar further through the delivery of Visual Studio 2013 and a suite of hosted tools in Visual Studio Online and we’ll continue to update these tools on an ongoing basis.

To my personal opinion, IBM is trying to follow with many challenges around product directions and integration (not mentioning administration and cost).
HP is losing grip, moving down to the “challenger” position with negative comments from Gartner even on their testing capabilities “However, we are concerned about its ability to keep pace in a rapidly changing test and quality market, while also trying to broaden into so many fields.”

Brian Keller (Technical Evangelist @ Microsoft Corp) is presenting the top 5 reasons to use the new cloud based Team Foundation Service

Brian’s video : click here

Top reasons are :

#5: We host your source control for you in the cloud for you to access anytime, anywhere. You can pick from either a traditional, centralized version control system, or if you like a distributed approach, we now support Git projects as well.

#4: You can collaborate with your friends and colleagues from around the world. It's easy to add new users to our project, set permissions, and then work together as you build that next killer app.

#3: You can manage your project using backlogs. You can track your work using task boards. You can measure that continuous value out to your customer using Kanban boards. And if you're a data geek like me, you can
build all sorts of charts and graphs so you can track your project to completion.

#2: Team Foundation Service is for everyone. Whether you use Visual Studio, Eclipse, Xcode, or your own code editor, we've got you covered.

And the #1 reason to use Team Foundation Service is that it's free for teams of up to 5. For larger teams, it's also included as a benefit for eligible MSDN subscribers.

You can get started today over at TFS.VisualStudio.com

Few highlights:

Microsoft as a strategic ALM solution partner

“We have multiple challenges in delivering high-quality solutions to our internal customers. One of the ways to accomplish that is to pick a strategic vendor and stay close to them. For us, Microsoft was the right choice.”

“The support we get from Microsoft and our ability to influence their future products made them a much better choice than some of the competing solutions.”

The use of heterogeneous solutions for ALM caused difficulties

“We replaced five different systems with Microsoft. We now have twice as much functionality and can customize our processes and reports more easily.”

“We were using various tools for source control, bug tracking, etc. This caused all sorts of headaches and slowed the team down considerably. With an integrated solution, these problems have gone away.”

“Using Microsoft as a single truth repository means the team no longer needs to search for information across multiple systems. This has greatly increased productivity.”

“Our previous solutions did not integrate with each other properly. With Microsoft ALM, everything worked right out of the box.”

“We chose Microsoft because the integration between the various solution components was seamless. Also, almost no training was required.”
