Its been a while. In the quiet I have been trying to get back to my Build roots. One of my recent outings was to the Microsoft Build Tour in Sydney
So, you have a web app but you would like to enhance it and make it more friendly for your users without rewriting it to suit each platform. The hackathon day enabled me to work though this scenario, enabling a simple web app fro the cloud and making it cloud and multi device ready.
Progressive web apps allows existing web applications to be faster, deal with offline scenarios and to be delivered on different OS’s and application stores. You can take a web app and auto generate a platform native application. You can extend it and deal with offline scenarios.
The magic – An underlying service called a service worker - https://preview.pwabuilder.com.
All you need to update your web app to be PWA aware, then add in platform specific features.
Installation of new clients are generated from the web app by using a script: preview.pwabuilder.com/generator
If you would like to DIY you can start here: https://bthack.azurewebsites.net/
Be sure you follow Andrew Coates instructions to prep yourself beforehand : https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/acoat/2017/06/25/build-tour-sydney-hack-are-you-ready/

What you'll be able to do within an hour or two:

Deploy a web app to an Azure App Service
Use the web application offline. Offline copy of pages
Creating a Windows 10 native app and debugging the application in the same fashion as a web app
Add to the local app Windows 10 features to extend the application. Through feature detection
App linking – Demonstrating redirecting from a web site URL to your Windows 10 application
In memory caching

References:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/uwp/launch-resume/web-to-app-linking

Angela Duckworth recently talked to our company about Grit. I love this topic, but probably more so...

Angela Duckworth recently talked to our company about Grit. I love this topic, but probably more so as it reminds me of my childhood. Grit tubs at the end of the road for when it got icy and dangerous to drive.

Grit I discovered through Gladwell books and sports science studies. What was discovered was a core component of success is grit.

Grit is a:

Personality trait
Passion and perseverance towards long-term goals
Sustained effort and interest in a specific activity over years in spite of hardship, disappointment and plateaus

Quoted from University of Sydney, faculty of education and social work. They did a study of 400 Australian Elite youth footballers and visited various footballing teams worldwide to see how they developed elite athletes;

While certain individuals may change goals and direction in the wake of disappointment or boredom, gritty individuals possess the fortitude to continually endeavour toward their goal even without immediate feedback or recognition. It was no surprise that grittier players invested more time than their peers, in competition and play, and performed bet

Angela described grit also as perseverance and passion (direction) over a long period time. Its related to something you are Interested in and think is important.

So, in answer to this blog posts topic, Grit can be developed because its sustained over a long period of time.

How can you harness and develop Grit?

If you are trying to be gritty you might want to think about a role model and ask yourself who are you trying to be like?

A growth mindset, another strong cultural meme at Microsoft, and grit are highly correlated she said, though growth mindset doesn’t guarantee other centred purpose

Perhaps you can give yourself hypothesis to test. Do one thing better every day. Ask yourself why, so you can’t find multiple routes to a goal

Curiously millennials have had the lowest score in Grit – Grit may well be related to life experience. A maturity principle.

Leadership and Grit?

In terms of leading, and even parenting there are ways of developing grit. In general, encourage finish whatever you begin. Fulfil your commitments. Choose things that are hard.

Also recognise that passion comes from autonomy. Preserve, don't diminish autonomy.

Angela finished our session with a warning… be careful – there can be costs and risks with Grit. It can be consuming and can be single purposed, which is not always team or socially centred.

Recommended Books –

o Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance

o Peak: Secrets from the New Science of Expertise < 10,000 hour study of Gladwell Outliers fame

Is it simply about acquisition? Removing the competition or embedding new features where you find gaps. Or indeed, should one be more concerned about giving others a hand? I was thinking about this more than just in terms of profit. For me this reaches its answer in the ability to innovate.

For the greater technical good, we need larger companies to share so that others can benefit from there generational learning's. Large companies can afford to invest in R&D and never implement it. At the same time smaller companies have the business urgency and agility to try new things.

Embracing a growth mindset, how do you fail at something and share it so others can learn? It makes entire sense for a larger company to invest in small firms so that they can spread your risk and reap future returns. On such evidence of the latter is featured here: How BMW, Audi, GM and the rest of big auto are betting on startups.

But maybe it should at early stages be something that is done with no immediate return. One such local example I heard was within Microsoft System Integrators. Each helping each other. For example Readify helping Kloud find their feet in the early days. Is it a good thing that they were later acquired by Telstra?
I’ve been heads down working with some emerging Azure partners for the past year and only...

I’ve been heads down working with some emerging Azure partners for the past year and only resurfacing to find that the technical landscape for Azure has changed. Its got to be twice the size and perhaps more than twice the footprint of when I last looked in any depth,.

As I look back, I wanted to reflect on the various stages of some of the software vendors I have worked with and the identification of those that are successful.

Success, as far as I experienced from Software Vendors, is a combination of:

Urgency - Does this business have a pressing need to deliver yesterday. Do they have clear timelines? Are the immediate goals, immediate?

Capability – Does the business have a technical team that is capable of delivering a quality product

Investors – Does this business have an experienced and deep pocketed backer that will guide the business to success or limit its failures.

Leadership – Can the leadership team efficiently explain why they exist, who their customers are, and where they want to be in the medium term

You might be wondering why there is nothing about the customer or the market here? What I have learned is, almost without exclusion, a business has multiple backers that have already approved the business case. These business smarts, if actively involved, will limit the liability of any rogue element of a new business and promote appropriate risk taking.

Questions to ask to understand success:

Are you building a product?

Have you or are you acquiring initial customers ?

Have you short term plans to go global?

Things you can do to confirm this without meeting or socially stalking them.:

Size/ open job descriptions

Understand the executive team and location

Research the company history and ownership

Understand from company website the business model/product description

At Microsoft this stuff is important. We have an arsenal of people and resources but have learned to make sure we align well - really connect the two businesses for increased marketing/sales and improved technical delivery. This means true co-selling, promotion through marketplace, development of launch plans, connection to global development teams and side by assistance to launch or release the next version of the product or solution suite. see So, you want to build a cloud service?

The stage of a business is important as to what help you can bring:

At the larger end of town:

Angel or Seed - Build the product, define the market and user base (250K - 2M)

Series A (1st) - Scale the product - Master the business model (2M - 15M) and scale beyond one market.

Series B (2nd) - Scale the business - Business Model and UserBase stable now growing nationally (15M and greater)

Series C (3rd) - More Capital to Scale - Possibly buying other companies and going international

Here is some of my interpretation of various early business Stages and approximate money investment in 2014/5:

STAGE

MONEY

INVOLVEMENT

LOCAL

Launch

IPO/ Trade Sale

Will have public expectation of results

Series A

2m+ **

Will have a mandate for results

Seed VC

0.5-2m

Will want to see results

ANU Connect Ventures

Angels

Equity

early but long term committed

Angels Sydney

Accelerator

Equity

time limited, mentoring

MS Ventures
MuruD
Griffin Accelerator
Starfish Ventures

Incubator

Small budget

company formation, innovation focus

BlueChilli

Innovation Hub /Working Space

Partnership

first year/s

Fish burners

Its also worth considering that BizSpark+ now provides budding start-ups up to 120k of Azure credit

Given this stage “ladder”, what attributes (or “Viral Coeffient”) can point at future success? I suggest the following:

Born in the cloud - Created or funded in the last 5 years

Delivering SaaS in their market effectively – Do they have happy customers?

Yet to reach its potential – the pool of customers is the tip of the iceberg

Have money to fund growth – In my experience companies asking for money from a partner don't often succeed

Are in a blue ocean - the competitive landscape is negligible or the solution is unique

Naturally I am bound to say Azure can assist any business… but this is certainly true if the company is bound for success or high growth. Microsoft Azure’s powerful higher level services help our partners design a model that works with their business rather than just “hosting” what they have already. The higher level services can help our partners business overcome growing pains in terms of scale, deployment, operations and operational management. Of the 60 or so unique platform services I’d highlight:

Active Directory

Machine Learning

Micro services

For further insights into stages and start-ups I’d refer to the experts rather than anecdotes. You can obtain further reading through great resources such as the LeanStartup Case Studies (Dropbox, Wealthfront, Imvu) and Venture Deals -Brad Feld and Jason Mendels

Of course there are arguments that latency and sovereignty at less important than one may think and for most modern applications, most well thought out applications, that's true. With two new regions in Australia this discussion becomes a moot point.

But which data center/centre is best for you?

This morning Tom Hollander pointed me at a new browser to region testing tool that I thought I would share. I suspect some of you may have seen Azure Speed as it been available for a few months which positively makes it a dinosaur in cloud terms.

For those interested in other tools, in the past I used the trusty Azure Throughput Analyzer (Microsoft Research) but in more recent times I have been using Microsoft Azure Speed Test – Two 10 Degrees rather than https://azureping.info/ (Thanks Marc Walter). But Tom’s suggestion, cunningly named Azure Speed, not only has the Australian DCs listed but it also has a number of additional tests beyond comparing the browser and storage Latency. It also has tests for traffic Manager, CDN and the size tests too (ala Microsoft Research)

** caveat: computer connection, network, time of day, size of pipe, ISP, metrological patterns, acts of god, gremlins etc. all affect your results. Best to try it over a period to get an accurate picture.

One of the key benefits of an Enterprise agreement, beyond a discount, is that multiple teams and applications can be using a single agreement. This makes it easier to manage for the enterprise as a whole however the administrator may want to have better visual line of sight of who is doing what.,

Typically the enterprise administrator may be supporting internal billing to different teams, or even external billing.

Read here for more information on Azure Portals and Access Levels

The following tools will help you manage and monitor consumption of services and where there are deployed:

Readify Azure EA Insights Tool

Example of the data provided is available here

Azure Cost Monitor

Note from Partner : The data is pulled straight from EA API.
