Issues that are fixed in Operations Manager:

When you run the Agents module version 1.6.2-337, you may receive the following alert:
Module was unable to convert parameter to a double value

When you run System Center 2016 Operations Manager in an all-French locale (FRA) environment, the Date column in the Custom Event report appears blank

The Enable deep monitoring using HTTP task in the System Center Operations Manager console doesn't enable WebSphere deep monitoring on Linux systems.

When overriding multiple properties on rules that are created by the Azure Management Pack, duplicate override names are created. This causes overrides to be lost.

When the heartbeat failure monitor is triggered, a "Computer Not Reachable" message is displayed even when the computer is not down

The Get-SCOMOverrideResult PowerShell cmdlet doesn't return the correct list of effective overrides

When creating a management pack (MP) on a client that contains a Service Level (SLA) dashboard and Service Level Objects (SLO), the localized names of objects aren't displayed properly if the client's CurrentCulture settings don't match the CurrentUICulture settings. In cases where the localized settings are English English, ENG, or Australian English, ENA, there's an issue when the objects are renamed.

The Event ID: 26373 error, which may cause high memory consumption and affect server performance, has been changed from a “Critical” message to an “Informational” message.

The Application Performance Monitoring (APM) feature in System Center 2016 Operations Manager Agent causes a crash for the IIS Application Pool that's running under the .NET Framework 2.0 runtime. Microsoft Monitoring Agent should be updated on all servers that use the .NET Framework 2.0 application pools for APM binaries update to take effect. Restart of the server might be required if APM libraries were being used at the time of the update.

The UseMIAPI registry subkey prevents collection of processor performance data for RedHat Linux system. Also, custom performance collection rules are also impacted by the UseMIAPI setting

Organizational Unit (OU) properties for Active Directory systems are not being discovered or populated

The Microsoft.SystemCenter.Agent.RestartHealthService.HealthServicePerfCounterThreshold recovery task fails to restart the agent, and you receive the following error message:
LaunchRestartHealthService.ps1 cannot be loaded because the execution of scripts is disabled on this system

The DiscoverAgentPatches.ps1 script in Microsoft.SystemCenter.Internal.xml fails and you experience an exception

An execution policy has been added as unrestricted to PowerShell scripts in Inbox management packs

SQL Agent jobs for maintenance schedule use the default database. If the database name is not the default, the job fails

This update adds support for OpenSSL1.0.x on AIX computers. With this change, System Center Operations Manager uses OpenSSL 1.0.x as the default minimum version supported on AIX, and OpenSSL 0.9.x is no longer supported

The Average Physical disk sec/transfer performance counters are not displayed for Hewlett Packard systems.

OMi displays incorrect memory information for Solaris 10 systems.

The Network Adapter Performance counter is not displayed for SLES 12 x64 platforms in the console.

You can't discover file systems on HPUX 11.31 IA-64 computers that have more than 128 disks. Previously, only 128 VGs were supported. This update extends support to 256 VGs.

Deep monitoring can't be started successfully for some Jboss applications because the discovery of the Jboss application server sets the DiskPath for the Jboss server incorrect. Deep monitoring is not started in JBoss stand-alone mode when a nondefault configuration is used. This update provides additional support for JBoss stand-alone mode.

SSRS 2016 has a problem when using with Operations Manager 2016. If your time-zone is in positive range (+1, +14) then "Reports View" of SSRS raise an error like "Could not load folder contents" and we cannot see Reports in this view.

Positive Time-Zones

When you enter "https://serverName/Reports" you get an error. -"Could not load folder contents"-. But https://serverName/ReportServer working correctly. So you can still open reports from Operations Manager consoles Reporting Pane.

Workaround:

If you change time zone of SQL Server that hosts Reporting Service to "UTC" or "Negative (-1, -12), Root folder of Reports page became viewable.

Solution:

You can install latest Cumulative Update to SQL Server that hosts SSRS service. After install Cumulative Update 2 (KB3182270), you can open Operations Manager reports from "Reports View". You should read Support article before update your SQL Server. Also you should check the latest Cumulative Update / Service Pack of SQL Server installations frequently.

Many times, we would like to clean inactive agents from Operations Manager automatically. But Operations Manager has no option to clean or display inactive agents on console. I will explain how can you analyze Operations Manager agent healthy and accessible. You can use this script in Orchestrator to clean inactive agents automatically.

We will write custom PowerShell script to analyze inactive agents. I will explain every script part.

High steps;

Prerequisites

Writing Custom PowerShell script

Detailed steps;

Prerequisites,

In this script, we will test connectivity of an agent. If we couldn't connect to agent, then we will test DNS Name resolution of this agent. So, we need DNS aging and scavenging options have to be active. When this option active, DNS records (dynamically registered records) removed from DNS database automatically. By default, aging and scavenging of resource records is disabled. These options must be enabled, both at the DNS Server and on the zone. You can read details about aging and scavenging here. If you enable these options, removed servers resource records deleted automatically by DNS Server.

If you have any agents that can't be resolve hostname – IP address information, you may add hostname – IP address information on hosts file located in management server. Because our script test DNS name resolution and connectivity with ping command. If you don't add address information to DNS Server or hosts file, you can delete active agents that running on workgroup or another domain.

Writing Custom PowerShell script,

First we need to add some assemblies to our script to connect and manage operations manager.

<colgroup> <col style="width: 1219px" /></colgroup>

[System.Reflection.Assembly]::LoadWithPartialName("Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.OperationsManager.Common")
[System.Reflection.Assembly]::LoadWithPartialName("Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.OperationsManager")

With the following code block we will connect to the one of the management server with current credentials.

<colgroup> <col style="width: 1219px" /></colgroup>

$MGConnSetting = New-Object Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.ManagementGroupConnectionSettings("scomserver.fqdn.name")
$MG = New-Object Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.ManagementGroup($MGConnSetting)
$admin = $MG.Administration

At this part, we collect all of agents managed by Operations Manager.

<colgroup> <col style="width: 1219px" /></colgroup>

$agentManagedComputerType = [Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.Administration.AgentManagedComputer];
$genericListType = [System.Collections.Generic.List``1]
$genericList = $genericListType.MakeGenericType($agentManagedComputerType)
$agents = Get-SCOMAgent
$Inacti = new-object $genericList.FullName
$Inacti.Clear()
$Unreach = new-object $genericList.FullName
$Unreach.Clear()

Now, time to test computer-agent connectivity. We will use test-connection PowerShell cmdlet to test computer connectivity. We add every agent object to the "$Inacti" array that can't be connect. At the end of foreach cycle, we will have a list that cannot connect to the agents.

<colgroup> <col style="width: 1217px" /></colgroup>

foreach ($agent in $agents)
{
if (Test-Connection -ComputerName $agent.DisplayName -Quiet -Count 1)
{
## Server is Accessible
}
else
{
$Inacti.Add($agent);
}
}

In this ForEach loop we test name resolution of every inactive agents. If no ip address return of server then we add this agent $Unreach array.

<colgroup> <col style="width: 1217px" /></colgroup>

foreach ($InActiveAgent in $Inacti)
{
$ip = (Resolve-DnsName -Name $InActiveAgent.DisplayName -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue).IPAddress
if ($ip.Length -le 0)
{
$Unreach.Add($InActiveAgent)
}
}

If $Unreach list has more than 0 agent information, these agent removed with the following part of script.

<colgroup> <col style="width: 1217px" /></colgroup>

if ($Unreach.Count -gt 0)
{
$genericReadOnlyCollectionType = [System.Collections.ObjectModel.ReadOnlyCollection``1]
$genericReadOnlyCollection = $genericReadOnlyCollectionType.MakeGenericType($agentManagedComputerType)
$agentReadOnlyCollection = new-object $genericReadOnlyCollection.FullName @(,$Unreach);
$admin.DeleteAgentManagedComputers($Unreach)
}

You should be careful when you running this script. If you have any problem with name resolution on your network, you can delete active agents accidentally.

Complete script:

<colgroup> <col style="width: 1219px" /></colgroup>

[System.Reflection.Assembly]::LoadWithPartialName("Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.OperationsManager.Common")
[System.Reflection.Assembly]::LoadWithPartialName("Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.OperationsManager")
$MGConnSetting = New-Object Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.ManagementGroupConnectionSettings("scomserver.fqdn.name")
$MG = New-Object Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.ManagementGroup($MGConnSetting)
$admin = $MG.Administration
$agentManagedComputerType = [Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.Administration.AgentManagedComputer];
$genericListType = [System.Collections.Generic.List``1]

$agents = Get-SCOMAgent
$Inacti = new-object $genericList.FullName

{

{

On the first post we discussed preparing environment for operations manager. In this part of article, we will install operations manager 2016.

This article has 2 parts.

Accounts

When we install Operations Manager, we need 4 account. Action Account and SDK account can be Local System account. But Data warehouse read and write accounts must be domain user account. No account should be a local user. You must be local administrator of Windows Server and system administrator of SQL Server. Operations Manager does not require Domain Admins or equivalent rights to run. But some management packs require administrative privilege to monitor server software. You should read Management Pack guides.

Here is a table for accounts.

Scenarios

Single-server deployment

Single server deployment scenario used when you want to test, management pack development or have a small environment. You can install all roles except Gateway server on a single server. All Windows, Unix/Linux agents and network devices report to the management server. All of audit collection forwarder agents send audit data to this management server. Management server also has database role with SQL Server. When you deploy single-server scenario you can monitor limited agent.

Distributed Deployment

Distributed deployment allows for distribution of features across multiple servers. Distributed deployment provides load sharing and fault tolerance options. You can install all roles separate servers. Also you have database high availability options with SQL Always-ON and Cluster.

Installing

High Steps

Windows Server Feature and Role installation

SQL Server installation options

Change SQL Agent service startup state

Installing Report Viewer Controls

Installing Operations Manager 2016

Detailed Steps

Windows Server Feature and Role installation

You can install feature and role prerequisites either via Server manager or via PowerShell. My choice generally using PowerShell. I use PowerShell script to install all prerequisites quickly and correctly.

Open a PowerShell screen with administrative privilege

Replace "sources\sxs" folder address for your computer and copy/paste to PowerShell screen.

Import-Module ServerManager Install-WindowsFeature -Name NET-Framework-Core -Source C:\sources\sxs -Restart:$false Add-WindowsFeature Web-Server, NET-HTTP-Activation, NET-WCF-HTTP-Activation45, Web-Mgmt-Console, Web-Net-Ext, Web-Net-Ext45, Web-Static-Content, Web-Default-Doc, Web-Dir-Browsing, Web-Http-Errors, Web-Http-Logging, Web-Request-Monitor, Web-Filtering, Web-Stat-Compression, Web-ISAPI-Ext, Web-ISAPI-Filter, Web-Metabase, Web-Asp-Net, Web-Windows-Auth, Windows-Identity-Foundation

SQL Server installation options

We need SQL Server with the following options;

Database Engine Services with Full-Text Search option and Reporting Service with Native Option.

SQL Collation must be SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS.

Authentication mode is Windows. You have to add an account at least. I added my domain administrator account. You can create a special group, for example SCOMAdministrators named and add this group as a SQL Server Administrators.

You can install management tools from Microsoft Download Center. Setup file is about 900MB. (SSMS-Setup-Enu.exe)

Change SQL Agent service startup state

On the SQL Server open services.msc mmc console and find "SQL Server Agent (MSSQLSERVER)"

Open properties with Double click.

Change startup type from manual to automatic then click start to start service. Then click OK to close properties screen.

You can close services.msc screen.

Installing Report Viewer Controls
