Migration from Sybase to SQL Server made easy

The SQL Server Migration Assistant for Sybase has been released on a customer technology preview (CTP).  This tool dramatically reduces the cost and effort of migrating your Sybase databases onto the SQL Server database platform.  As a yardstick, the equivalent tool for Oracle reduces the time of migration by around 80%!!!

The tool achieves this saving by providing automated conversions of all Sybase database objects like tables, triggers, stored procedures etc. and it supports Sybase ASE versions 10 and above.  It also helps estimate the size of the migration so you can figure out the scope and duration of the project for the migration.

So how do you get your hands on the assistant?  Well, at present we are only releasing the tool to nominated customers and partners (let me know if you want to be selected).  However, the great news is that those customers can benefit from a special package of benefits that have been put together in conjunction with the release of the new tool.  These benefits include the following:

·         Up to $20,000 in consulting services for the migration project. The services will be provided by Microsoft’s certified migration partners.

·         Direct support by the SSMA development team. SSMA Development will work with you and your customer to provide technical expertise.

·         Free membership in the SSMA Customer Advisory Council. The council provides members a unique opportunity to influence the future direction of the technology and product.

In return for these great perks, we do ask the following of you:

·         A defined project to migrate from Sybase to SQL Server 2005 using SSMA for Sybase.

·         Willingness to complete the project by 8/31/06.

·         Willingness to participate in case studies and other marketing activities.

·         Willingness to provide detailed product feedback (report bugs, share experience of using SSMA).

Sound interested?  Drop me a mail at james@microsoft.com and I can nominate you for entry into the program.  Be quick though - nominations close on the 19th May.
