This is a sad day around the OneNote test hallway. After more than 6 years of regular blogging I am stopping this test blog. There are a few reasons. First, the annoying aspect of this blog that became apparent very early was that I can never blog about what I am currently doing. I cannot talk about features in development since they may not actually wind up shipping and that has a been a tough hurdle to continually jump over the years.

The other reason is I chose to leave Microsoft for other opportunities, so I will not be on the OneNote team any longer. I had a blast while here and OneNote is, in my opinion, the cream of the Microsoft Office box. I will definitely miss the people on the team and the folks I have met through this blog.

One last task I did was to change the Contact Me link on this blog to send me mail at my personal account. I will be able to contact the team to send them any information you have so feel free to stay in touch for the time being.

Thanks for all the memories and all the interactions over the years!

Questions, comments, concerns and criticisms always welcome,
John

This week I received a note from a user who is in the process of repairing a 1969 Camaro. He wants to use OneNote to track his work and wanted some assistance with setting up a template that he could use on a daily basis.

He wanted an area on the page that would track his focus for the day, any parts he needed to order, what page of the assembly manual he was referencing on that day (this is a great piece of data that I probably would have overlooked) and what work was next on the To Do list.

He also wanted an area on the page to put photos of daily progress. He needed rule lines on the page to help when he wrote notes, and finally he needed to be able to print to paper so he had something to carry around with him. You can imagine not wanting to expose a tablet to the rigors of an auto shop or carrying it under the car with you.

That’s a lot of requirements but we were able to come up with a working solution. I created a page that was letter sized with rule lines. I chose letter size so he could see what would get printed when he does that and can move data around if it gets cut off. The rule lines are there just to help with writing. At the bottom I created a 4 cell table for pictures. He can just paste the pictures next to the numbers and they will line up on the page nicely. I set the table borders to be invisible so they won’t show. Then I saved the page as a template and set this section to use this as its new page.

Finally, I packaged this as a .onepkg file and sent it to him. All he needs to do is open the file and add this to as a notebook. Then he can drag/drop this section to any notebook he wants or just use the notebook he just created. The section will use this template as new pages.

I figured this was a nice use of OneNote to restore an old muscle car and am sharing the package file below. Just grab it from below my signature.

Questions, comments, concerns and criticisms always welcome,

A OneNote user was printing from OneNote last week and when she printed, she kept seeing a little date marker at the bottom of the printed page. She did not want this little footer and sent me a mail to ask if that could be turned off.

To turn off the footer, click File | Print and then select Print Preview. You will get a dialog that looks like this:

Near the bottom right is the Footer control - you can set the Footer to print the name of the section + the page number, or just the number, or just the section name or turn it off by setting to (none).

I let her know and followed up later.

Just posting this since this is the single biggest helpful piece of information I have available when tracking down crashes. Dan's older directions needed to be updated so I decided to post the new information here.

First, Run "eventvwr.exe" and you will see this UI:

Expand Windows Logs \ Application:

Then I sort by Event ID. Just click the column to cause a sort:

1001 is the event ID needed. That is the ID for the upload of the report.

Now it gets a little tricky to find the OneNote error. I usually just look at the Date and Time column to find the approximate time I saw the error. When you highlight the entry, you will see this in the bottom pane:

Event Name will be OneNote - it is obscured in this picture. Sorry about that!

Anyway, that number is the bucket number - 90294379354 in this case. Anytime a crash is reported, that is the number I need to look up all the logs and other information for it.

Thanks for helping make OneNote better.

Questions, comments, concerns and criticisms always welcome,

John

A few months ago I wrote a tip about emptying the Recycle Bin to save space (https://blogs.msdn.com/b/johnguin/archive/2014/02/17/onenote-tip-empty-the-notebook-recycle-bin-to-save-space.aspx)

While that is valid, there are a couple of points that have been mentioned by readers since then that I want to share.

First, as pointed out by Chip at the original article, the Recycle Bin icon was under the Share tab for OneNote 2010. I need point out that you can get the free version of OneNote 2013 over at www.onenote.com if you want the new UI.

Also, some of the clients do not show the Recycle Bin at all. I got an email asking how to delete items in this case, and the answer is you don't really need to worry about it. After 60 days, the old items will get emptied automatically so you do not need to micromanage this little detail if you do not want to. If you want to see what is there, you can get the free Windows version of OneNote, though, and just check on things.

I hope this clears some of this up.

A few weeks ago I had the idea to get a Raspberry Pi set up to display the tweets sent about OneNote. I wrote about it here: https://blogs.msdn.com/b/johnguin/archive/2014/04/28/return-of-the-onenote-twitter-feed-thanks-to-raspberry-pi.aspx

I am sad to say this is being shut down. The browser I had to use (Ice Weasel, a Firefox variant) simply kept crashing at least once per day. Since the goal of this was to have a 24 hour per day kiosk, I am giving up on this for now and looking for a new machine to use to get this back and running. I just can't spend 5-10 minutes per day restarting all the things needed to get the display working.

It was a lot of fun seeing the tweets though. For people around here that speak several languages it was especially a good time to see what folks in Japan, Egypt or India were saying. I hope to have this back up in a few weeks and then we will be able to see all the tweets you are sending about us.

Testing the change I made was fairly straightforward and is a good example of a small, but complete, test matrix. The feature behaved differently if a registry key was set AND the number of pages was above 10, so the matrix was pretty small:

And that is it. There was nothing special about other test cases - international considerations don't matter, performance was unchanged and so on. The only testing built into this would have to do with the equivalence class of the Registry Key being "OFF" is the same as the registry key not being set at all. If the key does not exist - that is the case right after you install and you never change the setting in options - OneNote will behave the same as it did before the service pack if the number of pages is less than 10, and ask otherwise.

Testing took very little time. Most of this was automated so I just ran those tests and managed to get this fix done fairly quickly.

Now I am looking at the feedback from the users that want even more flexibility than what we have added so far. Feel free to keep the conversation going!

Questions, comments, concerns and criticisms always welcome,
John

When we shipped OneNote 2013 SP1, we changed the way we printed long documents to OneNote. I'm happy to announce we released a change (two days ago as I write this) that makes the behavior much better. I received a mail about this today and that reminded me that this fix had just gone out. Talk about a timely email!

Right off, here is a link to the download: https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2880458

What we now do is:

Obey the registry key controlled in Options about prompting for long documents across multiple pages:

If you check this box, any file that is more than 10 pages will be split across multiple pages.

If there are less than 10 pages, we restored the original behavior of putting them all on one page.

If there are more than 10 and you have not specified what to do, we ask you what to do.

Let me know what you think about the change. I'll take all heat for this change since I actually made the change myself - here’s one example of a tester making product changes - and think that changing back to what we had been doing before combined with obeying the user preferences here made the most sense.

This is only for OneNote 2013. Again, let me know what you think.

Questions, comments, concerns and criticisms always welcome,

John

This week I was given a small set of bugs that ultimately amounted to saying we are still using the word "SkyDrive" in some different places in OneNote. We changed the name to OneDrive recently and made a big effort to get the name correct so I looked into these reports.

It turns out there were a few comments scattered about that still used the old term, and a couple of places had some metadata about dialogs that still referred to SkyDrive. This is great since we don't have any actual strings or other UI that customers can see - these are all items in our code that don’t actually ship to anyone.

So while I am not worried about the severity of the bug reports, I still made the changes to convert these last remnants of the old name to "OneDrive." There were not very many and I got done fairly quickly with the changes. Next up is to wait for a signoff on the review and finish the build to make sure I did not slip in a typo or anything similar that would break the build. Then submit the change for inclusion in OneNote - not that anyone would ever notice these fixes, but it does make our life here a little more consistent.

Questions, comments, concerns and criticisms always welcome,

John
