Many of customers have been asking about BizTalk roadmap, what Microsoft is doing in the cloud, and questions about running BizTalk in Azure. Last week at TechEd North America 2012 Microsoft presented two sessions on the BizTalk Roadmap and demonstrations around BizTalk On-Premises, BizTalk IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) and BizTalk PaaS (Platform as a Service) scenarios. This is exciting news that I wanted to get out to you as soon as possible. It reinforces Microsoft commitment to BizTalk for future on-premises versions and also in the Cloud. Additionally, I’ve provided information on our new Azure IaaS offering which will be rolling out that is leveraged by BizTalk IaaS. -Jonathan Moons

BizTalk Roadmap and Updates for On-Premises, IaaS, PaaS

TechEd provided two sessions around BizTalk futures:

AZR 207: Application Integration Futures - The Road Map and What's Next on Windows Azure

AZR211: Building Integration Solutions Using Microsoft BizTalk On-Premises and on Windows Azure

Here is are some highlights from the two sessions at TechEd. Bala Sriram, Director of Development for BizTalk provided the introduction at the road map session and covered some key points around BizTalk:

More then 12,000 Customers

79% of BizTalk users have already adopted BizTalk Server 2010

BizTalk Server will be released for “years to come” after this release. I.e. There will be more releases of BizTalk after BizTalk 2010 R2.

BizTalk 2010 R2 will be releasing 6 months after Windows 8

New Azure (Cloud-based) BizTalk scenarios will be available in IaaS and PaaS

BizTalk Server on-premises, IaaS, and PaaS are complimentary and designed to work together

BizTalk Investments will be taken forward

The second session was mainly around drilling in and demonstrating the up and coming capabilities in BizTalk Server on-premise, IaaS, and PaaS:

BizTalk IaaS:

Users will be able to bring their own or choose from a Azure IaaS template to quickly provision BizTalk Server virtual machines (VHDs)

BizTalk Server 2010 R2:

Native adapter to connect to Azure Service Bus Queues, Topics and Relay.

Native send port adapter for REST. Demonstrated this in connecting to Salesforce to get and update Salesforce information.

ESB Toolkit will be incorporate are part of product and setup

BizTalk PaaS:

HTTP, FTP, Service Bus, LOB Application connectivity

XML and Flat File processing

Message properties

Transformation, Archiving, Tracking

Content based routing

Azure IaaS – Persistent Virtual Machine

Azure IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) and Azure Network are the most significant enhances to Azure since the initial release of Azure. If you are familiar with Amazon Web Services, this is what Azure IaaS is also about. It provides companies to ability to either take stock images that Microsoft offers or to bring their own VHD to Azure and quickly and easily set it up to run. VMs (Virtual Machines) can run standalone with be connected to the same virtual network and even federated with your on-premises servers.

This also becomes a key component to running BizTalk IaaS in Azure and allows customers to easily take existing BizTalk Server solution and run them in Azure. Here are a couple sessions explaining these new capabilities:

AZR201: Windows Azure IaaS and How It WorksWindows Azure IaaS and How It Works: Cover our Windows Azure Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) solution and how it works. Discusses how you provision, deploy, and manage Virtual Machines and Applications in Windows Azure. The session spends time covering both the new management portal and PowerShell management options.

AZR209: Windows Azure Virtual Machines and Virtual Networks: Covers Virtual Machine storage architecture and shows how to provision and customize virtual machines, configure network connectivity between virtual machines, and configure site-to-site networks that enable true applications that span from on-premises to Windows Azure.

What I want out of this is to have Movies grouped by Genre. Within BizTalk Server 2010 and with previous versions, this is not possible without writing some XSLT. When I did this years ago, I used something called Muenchian Grouping and since then, has been described in various places: Muenchian Grouping and Sorting in BizTalk Maps, BizTalk Training – Mapping – Muenchian Grouping and Sorting in BizTalk Maps without losing Map functionalities, and BizTalk 2010 Recipes : Document Mapping - Using XSLT Group-By.

Another option would be to use the for-each-group in XSLT. This is possible outside of BizTalk with custom XSLT. Unfortunately, BizTalk uses XSLT 1.0 and that version doesn’t have this function available. Either way it required custom XSLT.

Fast Forward to Azure

The good news is that custom code will no longer be required. With the CTP of the “Service Bus EAI and EDI Labs - December 2011 Release,” (can I just call this Azure Service Bus Integration or ASBI for short?) a new graphical mapping tool in Visual Studio is available. On the surface this is very similar to the BizTalk mapper with Functoids now called Operations and the mapper is the Transform Designer. But most importantly, you are no longer bound by the XSLT looping from BizTalk. The Transform Designer introduces new sets of operations called List and Loop Operations. These along with another concept of Scopes allow you to do any number of mini-transforms with filters, groups, and ordering that you might want. At least that is my take on it.

To take it for a quick trip around the block, I decided to take out this old problem I ran into way back when and see if I could do it in the new mapper and I was very happy to discover I could. Let’s take a look.

NOTE: This is a CTP and not the final product, it can change. I like the functionality here although as a CTP still needs some work on the UI. If you have feedback on this please provide it at the CTP forum.

What We Need to Do

There will be two main steps in this transformation, the first is to use the List Operations to get the data we want to manipulate. These Map Operations allow you to build a table inside of your map. The second step is to then use Loop Operations that will generate the output.

If you want to build your own, you can get started with the CTP here.

Lists: Your In-Memory Dataset

After adding a Transform (.trfm file) to your project, select your input and out schemas. These are XSDs, same as the BizTalk mapper. Once you have this, you can start to work with your List Operations.

Start by adding a Create List Operation, which is a container for the fields to be added. After adding this, bring up the properties window and add in each of the fields Think of the Create List Operation as a table in the map, so these are your column names. Right now you have to manually type in the fields. Hopefully this will get easier, nice thing is that the incoming fields can be aliased with friendly names.

Add a ForEach Loop Operation inside the Create List Box and create a link from the Movie record to the Operation. The ForEach Loop Operation is used when looping over a node, but has no output to connect to a destination node. Essentially doing a SELECT FROM and bringing up the properties for this Operation shows that a condition can also be specified.

Drag an Add Item to List Operation inside the ForEach Loop and then create links from the source fields to this Operation allowing the selection of individual fields.

After completing this, open the properties window for the Add Item to List Operation to see the mapping from the incoming links to the fields you manually added. If any are out of order they can be changed using the arrows. Like the ForEach Loop Operation, this dialog has an optional condition where you can filter records. Other operations also allow this.

Notice the Scopes

When I started working in the designer, I didn’t realize at first that Scopes are explicitly set. In using BizTalk, there was no concept of Scope before, every Functoid was an individual entity, essentially private, and the best you could do is use a trick to create some global variables. With scopes, operations and links are grouped together and a specific scope is set for them. Any scope can access scope in the parent hierarchy, but not from sibling or child scopes. Each scope can be a map in and of itself. To select or deselect the scope, click the arrow button on the shape.

That is all I will mention about scopes today, but is probably worth a separate blog post.

Create Grouped Records with Loop and List Operations

At this point a list holds the records that are needed for a destination file. By using additional Loop and List Operations the records will be sorted and grouped from the Movie List.

Firs add a Select Unique Groups List Operation to the Home Scope.

The incoming link for this is the List and the properties window for it specifies how the records should be grouped. Select the Genre member to group by.

The output of this is connected to a MapEach Loop Operation and that in turn is mapped to the Genre record on the output file. The MapEach Loop for Genre creates destination records as opposed to the ForEach Loop Operation that does not.

To create the Movie record on the output file, add another ForEach Loop Operation inside of the Genre MapEach Loop. Connec this MapEach Operation to the Movie Record.

NOTE: Make sure you first set the MapEach Loop for Genre as the working scope. If you don’t change the scope, the new MapEach Loop Operation is added outside the Genre Loop. It is possible to move items after the fact by setting a new current scope and then right-clicking on an item and selecting 'Move to Working Scope. '

In the next section, the transform is completed by mapping from List Operations to the destination fields.

Mapping to Destination Records and Fields with Loop Operations

Once you have the Map Each Loops Created we are now ready to create destination links from our scope shapes to the appropriate destination records. We already have the structure of them mimicked in our transform, the individual fields’ just need to get pulled out. First add a Get Items List Operation to the Genre Scope. Get Items receives the records from the unique groups generated from a list.

In the Genre Scope add a Select Value List Operation for each destination field. In this example, there is only the GenreType field. The Select Value Operation allows you to specify the field from the list. Additionally, criteria can be specified. If criteria is specified the first record that matches it will be used. Connect the Get Items Operation to the Select Value Operations. Open the properties for the Select Value Operation and select the appropriate field. Finally connect the Select Value Operation to the destination record. This takes care of the Genre Records, but still need to handle the Movie Records.

Creating the Movies records will entail much of the same steps. The only change is that the ordering will be changed based on a field. Make sure the working scope is the MapEach Genre scope. Add another new operation from the toolbox, the Order By List Operation. From the Get Items Operation, draw a link to the Order By and from that to the Movie MapEach Loop. Open the properties for the Order By Operation and select the Title field.

Make the Movie scope your selected scope. Now add Get Items Operation and the Select Value Operations to the Movie Scope and connect them together. Connect the Select Value Operations to the destination field and also select the Title field in the Select Value Operations.

The last thing to do is test out the map to see if it works. They have included a similar testing capabilities inside the designer that existing in the BizTalk Mapper. Select the .trfm file and in the properties windows set the Test Map Input File. Then just right-click on the .trfm file and select Test Map. The output will be displayed in a window.

That’s it. Hopefully this has given you some insight into core piece of the new functionality offered in the Azure Transform Designer. This opens up numerous new possibilities for creating maps that would have never been available before. Try your own scenarios and give some feedback on the forum.

Also if you have some of your own BizTalk maps you want to try in the Transform Designer, a new command line tool has just been released on codeplex to be able to move your BizTalk maps over. This is an initial ‘best effort’ release so let them know if you run into issues.

2/14/2012: RaviBollapragada just posted a blog on the new mapper as well on the Azure blog.

I've also uploaded the files I used in this blog, the sample input file, the source and destination schemas and the transform file.

Just think of easily being able to hook up dozens of hundreds of locations (e.g. stores, field offices, kiosks, manufacturing sites, warehouses) to fan in/fan out/route/filter messages. It also goes right along with the Integration CTP in the next announcement. Here a number of links for the service bus as well.

Azure Service Bus Integration CTP Release

The SDK and Azure labs environment is now available to the public. You can now try out the new integration service that will be rolling out in Azure later this year. This leverages the Service Bus capabilities that are already on Azure to be able to do perform messaging integration to/from the cloud and on-premise applications. For this release they are targeting EAI and EDI integrations. This includes a new design canvas for creating integrations, mapper with extensive new functoids and a trading management portal. Harish Agarwai discusses the EAI portion in this Windows Azure blog entry.

SQL Azure Q4 2011 Service Release

This was originally announced at the SQL PASS Summit in October and this blog discussed how it has now been made available on the SQL Azure platform. This release includes the tripling the maximum database size to 150 GB, SQL Azure Federation to simplify the setup, management, and the automating of shards for greater elastic scale and a refreshed SQL Azure management portal with new and streamlined features.

SWIFT: Microsoft Drives ISO-XML Messaging Development Initiative

At SIBOS 2011, Microsoft announced it recently became the first corporate treasury to implement Extensible Markup Language (XML) standard ISO 20022, camt.052 and camt.053 version two, the new international standard for cash management financial messaging. This is also delivered via the Web Platform Installer (which streamlines the installation experience) by clicking under the .NET install link from this page or as a standalone install from here. This allows you to test a deployed instance by emulating messages for receive ports and validating messages in send ports.

BizTalk Adapter Pack Migration Tool 2.0 for SQL, SAP and Oracle DB

This tool has been around for some time, but wanted to make people aware since this topic does come up occasionally with the deprecation of the old SQL Adapter. In order to move from the old SQL Adapter to the newer BizTalk Adapter Pack SQL Adapter, it does require re-work. This migration tool eases the work necessary to get you to the newer and much improved SQL Adapter. It also assists in the migration of the deprecated SAP and Oracle DB adapters.

Using the BTS WCF Service Publishing Command-Line tool with BizTalk 2010

This tool is actually a BizTalk 2006 R2 tool, but can still be made to work with BizTalk 2010. If you use this tool with assemblies created with BizTalk 2010 you will get an error because the assembly is a .Net 4 assembly. To use this tool with BizTalk 2010 you need to edit the BTSWCFServicePublishing.exe.config file to specify to use the .Net runtime.

SAP is probably one of the most popular enterprise line-of-business applications out there. BizTalk Server has had SAP adapters for years and over many versions. Integrations can be configured to receive or send documents from/to SAP. Below are some resources you can leverage to ramp up on the BizTalk SAP adapter that you can use with BizTalk Server or directly from .NET:

SAP integration page at http://www.microsoft.com/biztalk/en/us/sap-integration.aspx.

This page has a number of other useful links:

Whitepaper: Unleash SAP using the Microsoft Platform: Using BizTalk Server to Bring Two Worlds Together

MSDN Webcast: Drive Innovation with SAP Integration

BizTalk Adapter Pack for SAP Documentation

BizTalk Adapter Pack home page

Downloads: Microsoft BizTalk Adapter Pack 2010 Documentation and Installation Guide

Microsoft BizTalk Adapter Pack 2010 Samples

The BizTalk Adapter Pack used to be a separate download, but is now included with BizTalk Server Developer, Standard and Enterprise Editions. You can download the free Developer Edition here.

Tip for 64-bit environments: Please read install guide if installing on 64bit environment.

Prior to BizTalk Server 2010, the various parts that you could install were spread around in separate installs. With BizTalk Server 2010, they have consolidated all the various components into a single package and provided splash screens that allow you to install it all from one place. No more hunting around for the packages!

Starting with the media itself you will see two folders, ‘BizTalk Accelerators’ and ‘BizTalk Server.’

BizTalk Accelerators - This contains all the accelerators:

Microsoft BizTalk Accelerator for SWIFT

Microsoft BizTalk Accelerator for RosettaNet

Microsoft BizTalk Accelerator for HL7

Microsoft BizTalk Accelerator for FileAct & InterAct Adapter For SWIFT

BizTalk Server – This is the starting point, from this folder clicking on setup.exe (see the first splash screen below) will allow you to install the following pieces:

Microsoft BizTalk Server 2010

Microsoft UDDI Services

Microsoft BizTalk RFID

Microsoft BizTalk RFID Mobile

Microsoft BizTalk Adapters – Clicking on this will provide additional setup options (second slash screen below):

Microsoft WCF LOB Adapter SDK – PreReq for BizTalk Adapter Pack

Microsoft BizTalk Adapter Pack – SQL, Oracle Db, Oracle EBS, SAP, and Siebel

Microsoft BizTalk Adapter Pack (x64) – 64-bit version of SQL, Oracle Db, Oracle EBS, and SAP (Siebel adapter is not available on 64-bit platforms)

Microsoft BizTalk Adapters for Enterprise Applications – These are the adapters based on the prior BizTalk Adapter Framework. They include adapters for JD Edwards OneWorld, JD Edwards EnterpriseOne, PeopleSoft Enterprise, TIBCO Rendezvous, and TIBCO Enterprise Message Service.

Microsoft AppFabric Connect – These are the new features for Windows Workflow Foundation 4.0 that add in shapes for calling maps and the BAP adapters. All the information you need on this can be found here. This allows you to use BizTalk features separately from BizTalk Server itself.

Here is a screen shot of the first splash screen when double-clicking setup.exe from the ‘BizTalk Server’ folder.
