LYNC Protocols and Ports app is now available for download from the WP7 Marketplace. If you prefer Zune, then directly go here

Why this app?

LYNC is still a new product

I have identified 225 possible communication links in the LYNC environment (15 x
15). For example, FE to internal edge, external client to external edge etc

What am I attempting?

I am attempting to

Bring down the time involved in designing LYNC architecture and deployment by having
a quick reference app

clear out any doubts or issues that are arising from wrong protocol or port being
configured or not allowed in the firewall rules.

Spread the knowledge.

Known UI issues? To be fixed in next update

The selection (area and font) for source and destination is
too small

Known limitations? To be fixed in next update

Port 5065 and 5067 not shown for FE to UM

Port 8404 for RGS match-making not shown between
the FE to FE.

Special Thanks

Thanks Rui Maximo, Rick Kingslan for the direct feedback with using the app.

Thanks,

Fax tone detection can work in the following three ways:

The IP PBX or IP gateway detects the fax tone and sends a reinvite request by using T.38 Session Description Protocol (SDP). --> This method should continue to work after the Service Pack upgrade

Fax tone detection can be performed by using both an IP PBX or IP gateway and Unified Messaging. In this method, when the IP gateway or IP PBX detects the fax tone, it does not send a re-invite but instead sends CNG tones (out of band) as named telephony events as defined in RFC 2833. As soon as the IP PBX or IP gateway has sent the CNG tones, the Unified Messaging server performs out-of-band fax tone detection and sends a reinvite by using T.38 SDP. --> This method should continue to work as well after the Service Pack upgrade

If the IP PBX or IP gateway does not use either of these methods, Unified Messaging inband fax tone detection should be turned on. This will enable the Unified Messaging server to detect incoming inband fax tones. By default, this feature is turned off. However, it can be enabled in environments that use IP PBXs or IP gateways that cannot detect fax tones. You enable inband fax tone detection by changing the EnableInbandFaxDetection setting to True in the globcfg.xml file. The globcfg.xml file is located in the \Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange\bin folder on a computer that is running the Unified Messaging server role.

In scenarios, where fax stops working after upgrading to a newer Service Pack the issue may be with the globcfg.xml file getting overwritten. This is applicable when customer has the fax detection through EnableInbandFaxDetection flag.

With voicemail delivery issues, the first place to verify is to go to the voicemail folder under \Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\UnifiedMessaging\

If the folder is empty then the voicemail files have left the UM and on its way to the Hub Transport.

If you see voicemail audio files there it means the connection between UM and HT is broken somewhere. This can arise because of one of the following scenarios.

The HT receive connector is mis-configured. Check the AUTH on the receive connectors

Verify if you can telnet on hub transport's IP and port number 25

Verify if HT FQDN is resolving to the correct IP

Check if any anti-virus software is installed

As an example, see the following events that may come when voicemail delivery is failing.

Event IDs 1436, 1423 and 1446

This blog helps in understanding a specific UM scenario where the UM is not able to recognize any...

This blog helps in understanding a specific UM scenario where the UM is not able to recognize any DTMF or RTP from the User when leaving a voicemail

It happens mainly in scenarios where the UM IPGW has a media card on a separate device (for eg: - in case of Nortel where the signaling server and media GW are on 2 separate devices)

Before following the below blog make sure the UM IP GW is indeed sending the RTP/DTMF. You can confirm this from wireshark using RTP stream player

Below is the call flow for such a scenario. Microsoft UM receives 3 ICMP Port Unreachable messages from the Media GW, an indication of media device not being ready to exchange RTP packets.

As per the RFC3264, section 5.1 on page 7, it states:

Once the offerer has sent the offer, it MUST be prepared to receive media for any recvonly streams described by that offer. It MUST be prepared to send and receive media for any sendrecv streams in the offer, and send media for any sendonly streams in the offer (of course, it cannot actually send until the peer provides an answer with the needed address and port information). In the case of RTP, even though it may receive media before the answer arrives, it will not be able to send RTCP receiver reports until the answer arrives.

If there is no immediate fix available to address this from the GW end, then the admin can use "Windows Firewall with Advanced Security" from "Administrative Tools" to block the ICMP port unreachables from reaching the application.

Below is the summary for the complete conversation in the CDR DB. It helps to understand how the UserJoinTime and UserLeaveTime are reported for every MCU. The DB identifies the MCUs as Chat, AV and App Sharing.

The NULL values reported in the UserJoinTime can be ignored for OCS 2007 R2. It is addressed in the next release of OCS.

The different UserJoinTime and UserLeaveTime reported for every MCU Type gives an idea about how these can be used for calculating the billable minutes or calculating Return-On-Investment (ROI).

The list is required for OCS Admins to see how many OC users are max'ing out on the number of contacts they have added.

The following SQL query helps in generating that list.

SELECT rtc.dbo.Contact.OwnerId, rtc.dbo.Resource.UserAtHost AS "SIP Name"
FROM rtc.dbo.Contact
INNER JOIN rtc.dbo.Resource ON rtc.dbo.Contact.OwnerId=rtc.dbo.Resource.ResourceId
GROUP BY rtc.dbo.Contact.OwnerId, rtc.dbo.Resource.UserAtHost
HAVING      (COUNT(rtc.dbo.Contact.OwnerId) >= 2)

The output looks like below. You can customize the script to add mroe columns.
