How do I get KN? (Updated June 30, 2006 10:00 AM)

We've been hearing this question a lot and here's the answer:

If you already have access to SharePoint 2007 Beta 2 on the Microsoft Betaplace site, then you also have access to KN.

If you do have this access, once you get to the main page on Microsoft Betaplace, you can follow the link for Knowledge Network that can be found by following the “Other Files” link under the “Beta Downloads” node in left navigation bar. From here you can follow the instructions to download the actual files for the software and associated documentation.

If you don't have access to SharePoint 2007 Beta 2 on the Microsoft Betaplace site, then you won't be able to access and use KN yet. We will update information about broader KN availability in the coming months.

  One question I have is about dependancies - will the client piece work in Windows2000 with Outlook2000, or does it require something newer on the client side ?

  Hi, Till now I haven't found any forums that discusses KN issues.
  
  I get an error in KNClient when analyzing e-mails/contacts which says 'Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt.'.  Could you please help in this regard? The eventviewer says the error is at 'Microsoft.Office.SocialNetwork.NativeMethods.ContactResolver.GetNextContact(.....)'

  We believe this is the known issue.  The issue sounds like the error (we have now fixed) that occurs when one of the users has an empty Department field in the Global Address Book. We will be rolling out a new build with this issue fixed shortly. We will provide further information here in the blog and we will notify users through a post in the beta newsgroups forum that this new build is available.
  
  To access the beta newsgroups forum go to the Microsoft Betaplace site. For users with this access, once you get to the main page on Betaplace, you should select the “Participation Info” link along the top and choose “Newsgroups”. This will explain how to connect to the beta newsgroups. Please be aware that these newsgroups are private newsgroups only (these are different from public Microsoft newsgroups). There are 2 specific private KN newsgroups once you have this configured:
  Microsoft.beta.office12.client.knowledge_network
  Microsoft.beta.office12.server.knowledge_network
  
  If you want to send us your knclient.log file we can confirm that this is this same known issue. Go to your c:documents and settings<username>local settingsapplication datamicrosoftknowledge networkknclient.log and send this file to us at KNBlog at Microsoft.com or post your information to the private KN beta newsgroup forum on Betaplace.

  The updated (June 30) KN application zip on betaplace only includes the documentation files.  This needs to be updated with the latest MSI's.

  The updated KN application zip on Betaplace now includes all the latest MSI's and the documentation files. Thanks to customer feedback, we caught this and we fixed this on July 1st.

  I've just stumbled across KN after looking for something like it for months. I know to get it that I have to be part of the SharePoint 2007 Beta 2 program. The question is how I become part of the program.

  We're glad you're interested in both KN and the SharePoint 2007 beta. We'll keep you posted regarding broader availability of KN. Right now it is limited to customers who already have access to SharePoint 2007 Beta 2 on the Microsoft Betaplace site.

  what are the dependencies? -- will this require SharePoint 2007 and Windows XP?

  The KN Client System Requirements are:
  •           Windows XP SP2 or Vista
  •           Office 2003 or Office 2007
  •           Active Directory (For KN beta release, Windows 2003 Server SP1 or higher is required on AD servers)
  •           .NET Framework 2.0
  •           Recommended: Outlook to run in “Cached Exchange Mode” for performance
  
  The KN Server System Requirements are:
  •           Windows Server 2003
  •           Exchange 2003 or Exchange 12
  •           Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007
  •           SQL 2000 or SQL 2005
