 Update 2015-09-03 - Lumia Creative Studio Beta is now available also for Windows Insiders with the preview of Windows 10 Mobile.

Today we have released a new beta version of our popular image editing application Lumia Creative Studio, to gather consumer feedback that will help us fine-tune the app before its final release. 

We welcome all Lumia users to join in testing this beta release of Lumia Creative Studio. Please download the app from Store and try it out. For example, apply one of the filters to give your photos a professional finish or blur the background to add sense of depth. You can also choose from a number of enhancements including brightness, vibrance and clarity, or simply crop and rotate.  Key new feature in this release is the added support for editing Living Images captured with Lumia Camera. 

If you find any issues with the app, we want to hear from you! Post to our feedback forum a description and steps to reproduce the issue, or vote/comment on an existing thread if someone has already reported the issue. 
We will be monitoring the forum and may have follow-up questions about the issues you report.  

List of known issues for this beta release:

• Following edit operations are either not supported for Living Images or contain some limitations for them:
• Clarity (under Enhance category)
• Blur
• Blur background
• Image saved with Creative Studio is not shown in Creative Studio’s landing page until the application has been restarted
• If Creative Studio was launched from Photos, Lumia Storyteller or Lumia Camera’s camera roll, image saved with Creative Studio is not shown in the application in question until it has been restarted
• Changed aspect ratio is not shown correctly if edited Living Image is re-opened with Creative Studio.

If you haven't yet joined the beta trial and are eager to get your hands on the latest fixes and features before they are rolled out to all, you are welcome to do so.  Lumia Camera Beta is available for the Lumia 930, Lumia 1520, Lumia Icon, Lumia 640, and Lumia 640 XL and requires at least the Lumia Denim update. We recommend setting Lumia Camera Beta as your default camera, so that it starts up with the hardware shutter button.

And if you spot any additional issues be sure to report those at our feedback forum.

The Lumia Camera team launched a poll to gather feedback about this approach, with the question:"When should Lumia Camera revert pro settings to default values?"  Almost 350 of you responded to the poll and many also provided additional comments.  Below you can review the results.

• 29% preferred the current approach of reverting 30 minutes after the last session
• 19% preferred remembering the settings until the phone is restarted
• 16% preferred reverting after 2 hours
• 8% preferred reverting after 1 day
• 28% suggested something other than one of the proposed alternatives

Among the suggestions under Other, two stood out.  Over one quarter of the "Other" comments requested a way to manually revert the pro settings in the camera UI.  Another quarter of the "Other" comments talked about providing a new setting in the app to configure your preference.  Saving a few custom presets was also mentioned several times, as was never reverting the settings.  Other suggestions included prompting the user, reverting when the app is forcibly closed, as well as some other time intervals.

Some of the comments to the blog post and on Twitter also reveal some of the thinking behind these responses:

"I do like it when I launch the camera and all the manual settings are back to auto in a new scenario, but I also sometimes like to keep the custom settings for a period of time." -- GoodThings2Life

"Why not just put a toggle switch on the screen where the camera will remember your last professional setting(until you change it) permanently and just toggle back to default setting to take a normal picture.  Then you can toggle back to your professional setting to continue talking your professional pictures at any point in the future." -- NOLATechy

"Preference: Add a "Custom" setting that remains unchanged; you manually change it when you want to. Otherwise, a 2-hour period seems good for retaining settings." -- Cui Dado

"How about this: - In preferences, choose if app should reset settings after 30 minutes, or never reset.  - Add a reset all settings control on the cAMera screen.  No surprises, user decides.  Additionally, custom presets is a good idea." -- Lars

On behalf of the Lumia Camera team, a big thanks goes out to all those that responded to the poll and provided their feedback.  The team is now taking these insights into account as they strive to make a better product. 

These features include:

• Updated design
• Selfie stick support for pictures and videos
• Simplified output resolutions

In practice, the Lumia 640 and Lumia 1520 are the first ones to be able to test these beta features since only certain phones are supported for the Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview at this time.

And although the primary intent of the beta trial is to validate the app on phones with Windows Phone 8.1, we welcome you to report any issues you find with the app when running the Windows 10 preview.

Update 2015-05-12 - This poll is now closed.  Thanks for all the responses and comments.  We'll summarize the results in an upcoming post.

One of the new features introduced in the Lumia Camera beta app is that your Pro Settings are remembered when resuming the camera app within 30 minutes. This means that you can switch to other apps during a photo shoot and then carry on shooting using the same settings without losing a beat.

However, if you only return to the camera app much later when you're likely in a different situation, you'll find the pro settings have reverted to their default values.

The Lumia Camera team is now looking for your feedback about this approach.

When is the right time to reset the pro settings to avoid missing a great shot due to incorrect settings?

We have released a new version of  Lumia Camera Beta with some experimental features. Let us know what you think about it.

If you frequently join conference calls but haven't used the app before, then now's a great time to try it out.  Join Conference makes it easy to dial into conference calls. No more switching to the calendar app, remembering the ID/PIN codes, getting the right access number, switching to the phone app, making the call, and entering all the codes. Instead just hit one button or, even easier, join by voice command.

If you're already using the app you should get the update to version 1.0.0.0 automatically.  Unfortunately, with this initial non-beta release we had to reduce the number of countries where the app is available, lowering it to 17 countries (US, Denmark, The Netherlands, UK, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Norway, Poland, Brazil, Romania, Spain, Sweden, and Australia).   But we hope to make it available again worldwide soon.

You'll also notice that we're shipping Join Conference as a Microsoft Garage app now, as we make plans for how easy conference calling may integrate more deeply into other Microsoft experiences in the future.

Big thanks for your involvement in the trial! The new simplified way of sharing cinemagraphs seems to work well for most users. Additionally, we’re hearing clearly that many of you wish that the app’s features should be integrated into the main phone camera application. This is something we’ll be considering for the future.

Since the trial is being concluded, the beta app won’t receive further updates and will be unpublished from the Store. 

We strongly recommend you to switch back to using the main Lumia Cinemagraph application from here on. Besides being available in many languages, it contains a few fixes to further improve the experience. All the cinemagraphs on your device will continue to be accessible and editable using the main app.
