hi everyone, it has become apparent that VMM 2008 R2 has switch port leaks when performing checkpointing operations through VMM (either through the PowerShell interface, through Visual Studio Lab Manager, through the self-service portal, or through the VMM Administrator Console)

This is a known issue that we will potentially address in an upcoming QFE. For now, there is a workaround that is detailed in this blog post. Alex from our team wrote the PowerShell script that resolves this issue.

How to tell if you have switch port leaks:

You are managing Hyper-V using VMM

Calling the following cmdlet from PowerShell take more than 3 minutes to return: get-vmhost "<host computer name FQDN>" | refresh-vmhost???

executing the following queries locally on the Hyper-V host from an elevated command prompt return more than a couple of hundred different objects. Running the same query command from wbemtest.exe connecting to root\virtualization as "select * from Msvm_hostedaccesspoint" for example will give you an instant count.

??winrm enum wmi/root/virtualization/Msvm_hostedaccesspoint

??winrm enum wmi/root/virtualization/Msvm_resourceallocationsettingdata

??winrm enum wmi/root/virtualization/Msvm_networkelementsettingdata

winrm enum wmi/root/virtualization/Msvm_bindsto

?

How to fix the switch port leaks:

Run the attached powershell script locally on the Hyper-V host from an elevated powershell window. This command will return back data on the unused networking elements in Hyper-V that were potentially leaked by VMM

DeleteUnusedHyper-VNetworkingComponents.ps1 <hostname FQDN> no

If you are satisfied with the objects that will potentially be deleted, run the same cmdlet with the "yes" switch.

DeleteUnusedHyper-VNetworkingComponents.ps1 <hostname FQDN> yes

Run refresh-vmhost again in VMM a couple of times to observe the increase in speed

Create a scheduled task to execute this script against your Hyper-V hosts every couple of weeks.

if you are following Hyper-V, you know that they added support fo?r ?SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11...

if you are following Hyper-V, you know that they added support fo?r ?SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 (32bit and 64bit). This is the webpage outlining this support: https://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/hyperv-supported-guest-os.aspx

In order for VMM to take advantage of this new OS support in Hyper-V (and as long as you are using the supported version of Hyper-V for SUSE 11), you need to execute a Database script to update VMM.

To make the process simple, follow the exact same steps as this blog post from me. https://blogs.technet.com/b/m2/archive/2010/04/16/getting-the-os-name-for-windows-2000-to-show-up-properly-in-the-vmm-administrator-console.aspx However, instead of the DB scripts outlined in this blog post, run the two ones i mention below

<<

INSERT INTO tbl_IL_OS

(OSId, Name, Description, Edition, ProductType, Version, Architecture, OSFlags, VMWareGuestId) VALUES ('dd8570f2-00db-449f-aa97-9c189279eeb3', 'Suse Linux Enterprise Server 11 (64 bit)', 'Suse Linux Enterprise Server (64 bit)', NULL, NULL, NULL, 'amd64', 0x14, 'suse64Guest')

This blog post comes courtesy of Todd Logan, a colleague at Microsoft.

Use the following steps to resolve a name mismatch error when viewing the remote desktop connection of a VM on a Hyper-V host through VMM (using the Virtual Machine Viewer application). The VMM server in this case is running as a virtual machine.

When you execute the "Connect to virtual machine" action from the VMM Administrator Console, you will get the following error: "The remote computer could not be authenticated due to problems with its security certificate. It mabe be unsafe to proceed". In this case, the popup with the error will give you the Name mismatch parameters. For example:

Requested remote computer: 192.168.1.250

Name in the certificate from the remote computer: democomputer.redmond.contoso.corp.com

How to troubleshoot and fix this issue:

Use the Internal nic for all virtual machines including the Virtual Machine Management server

Add the FQDN of the Hyper-V server to local hosts file on the VMM server (which is located in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\host. You'll need to change the folder options to view the extensions for known file types. An example entry looks like this. 192.168.1.250 democomputer.redmond.contoso.corp.com.

When adding the host into Virtual Machine Manager, make sure you use the FQDN (democomputer.redmond.contoso.corp.com) and clear the option for host to be in a trusted domain (use the non-trusted domain authentication)

Finish the rest of the steps to add the host.

It will take a few minutes to populate all the virtual machines that are running on the Hyper-V host. Once populated, select a VM and connect to it. You'll get prompted with an error warning. Click on the View certificate button and install the certificate by choosing to manually decide where to place the certificate and click the browse button to install it to the trusted root certification authority. Close the dialog box.

From your VMM server click start, run, and type MMC. From the menu bar select File, then select Add\Remove Snap-in. Select Certificates and then select Add for User. Repeat this process and Add Certificates for local computer.

Next copy your democomputer.redmond.contoso.corp.com certificate from the user trusted root to the following three places. Right-click the certificate and select copy and then paste into:

 a. Certificates - Current User -> Personal -> Certificates

 b. Computer (Local Computer) -> Personal -> Certificates

 c. Computer (Local Computer) -> Trusted Root Certification Authorities

Go back to VMM console and attempt to connect to the VM. You'll probably be prompted for your credentials. Enter your valid domain credentials, i.e. contoso\anotheradmin and select the option to remember my credentials.

At this point you should now be able to connect to a virtual machine without any errors.
