As David mentioned in his post about the New VM Role option, customer feedback has been very important to us here on the Virtual Machine Manager team. And with that said, we opened VMM User Voice to the public last month and we have seen a great turn around and are reviewing every idea carefully. For example, a recent response from the VMM team was provided for the suggestion titled “End-to-End Hyper-V and Cluster Management in the SCVMM Console”. In this case we looked into the idea but due to the large scope, we had to break it into the top four items that the voters were asking for.

Please take a look using the link above and vote on them. If you have an idea that you don’t see, please add it in User Voice as a new idea!

To proceed further, I also thought it might be helpful to provide a FAQ describing how to start User Voice and how the VMM team will respond:

FAQ:

Q: How do I begin with VMM User Voice?

1. Go to VMM User Voice
2. Create a user account if you don’t already have one. Enter your contact information in case we need to ask more questions directly).
3. Add your voice! (I wish… )

or

4. Cast a vote for an idea you like. You get 10 votes total!

Q: What ideas will be most considered by the VMM Product Team?

• Ideas with the highest votes will be considered most heavily.
• Clear and actionable idea will be reviewed the most quickly.

Caution: Do not create a single idea with multiple ideas within it. We need to keep each idea separate in order to understand the priorities. Please make sure each is a separate idea so we can clearly see and vote on each. If there are single submissions that contain a large number of separate ideas we may have to close the idea so that each can be considered separately.

Q: How does the VMM Team respond to the ideas?

Once the VMM Product Team has reviewed the idea, the idea status will change. We provide an email notification to voters and place responses on the User Voice site: VMM Product Team Response

Note: The "Under Review" status means that the VMM Product Team is reviewing the idea. It does not guarantee any deliverables.

Q: When do votes get released?

Each votes get released when the idea is closed. (decline or completed)

Every idea and every vote counts!! We are aggressively listening so please provide FEEDBACK!!

When you’re looking at testing a new IT solution—such as implementing a software-defined datacenter that includes virtualization, networking, and storage—the best starting point is always to get advice from someone who has already done it. You can learn from experience what to do and what to avoid. That’s the idea behind this book. We’ve gone through the work of deploying Windows Server, Microsoft System Center, and the innovations that Microsoft Azure has brought to these technologies. Our goal is to give you the step-by-step benefit of our proof-of-concept implementation to save you time and effort. And we want to show you how you can take advantage of innovation across the datacenter and the cloud to simplify your infrastructure and speed delivery of services to the business.

Using System Center Virtual Machine Manager Self-Service Portal 2.0 (SSP), you can respond more effectively—and at a lower cost—to the rapidly changing needs of your organization. Build on top of Windows Server 2008 R2, Hyper-V and System Center VMM, it enables you to offer infrastructure as a service.

It includes a pre-built, role-based self-service portal for both the datacenter managers and business unit IT consumers – all in a dynamic running engine. The portal reduces time needed to provision infrastructures and their components by offering a business unit “on-boarding” infrastructure request and change management. It also includes detailed guidance on how to implement the portal inside your environment. SSP is freely available, and fully-supported by Microsoft.

Key Features:

· Automation and Guidance: To assess, plan and design your private cloud foundation infrastructure

· Customer/business unit on-boarding: Automated workflows to onboard business unit IT departments onto to your virtualized shared resource pool

· Dynamic provisioning engine: To rapidly provision virtualized infrastructure in conjunction with System Center and Hyper-V

Are you ready for Dynamic Memory and RemoteFX?

I'm sure that everyone has heard of these new technologies being introduced in R2SP1 for Windows 2008. But do you now what they really mean? Here are some basic definitions and excellent blogs about each for your reading pleasure.

Hyper-V Dynamic Memory

So, what is Dynamic Memory? At a high level, Hyper-V Dynamic Memory is a memory management enhancement for Hyper-V designed for production use that enables customers to achieve higher consolidation/VM density ratios. With Hyper-V Dynamic Memory, Hyper-V will enable greater virtual machine density suitable for servers and VDI deployments.

RemoteFX

With Microsoft RemoteFX, users will be able to work remotely in a Windows Aero desktop environment, watch full-motion video, enjoy Silverlight animations, and run 3D applications within a Hyper-V VM – all with the fidelity of a local-like performance.

Just wanted to make everyone aware of a method to change the owner field of multiple VMs via Powershell, written by a colleague, Dave Guenthner. This is a great method to use if you need to change the owner field of a lot of VMs at once. Please visit his blog for more information.
