Anees Ahammed, Founder and Developer of Glimpses, teamed up with us for a multi-day Hackfest; during which we worked on converting his application glimpses to UWP app and publish it to the Windows Store.

Core Team:

Anees Ahammed (@AneesAhammed) – Founder and Senior Software Engineer, Glimpses

Hatim Nagarwala (@hatimnagarwala) Application Developer, Microsoft

Glimpses

Glimpses was founded and developed by Anees Ahammed back in 2016. He wanted to create a simple and fluid application to write down your thoughts and capture your memories and have these synced and backed up in the cloud. He built glimpses as a desktop application, specifically for Windows, to be used as a personal journal where you can track your daily activities, capture your thoughts, record your travels, and people you meet.

The application works on Windows 7, 8 and 10 with a smart set of features including:

Timeline view to rediscover your memories with beautiful images

Integrated calendar view to easily view and create an entry on a specific date

Tags to organize your journal entries with weighted multiple color tags

Distraction free writing to helps you stay focused

Favorites section to easily find and view your most preferred entries

Supports Markdown-Preview

Export to PDF

Spell check and Retro/Typewrite mode

Publish to create a shareable link

Problem statement

Glimpses was built for Windows with C# and WPF. It is made available for download from the official website as a standard "exe" application. The WPF application works great as a desktop application but does not offer the best modern app experience for Windows 10 users. Nevertheless, Anees would love to get his application on the Windows Store and incorporate some Universal Windows Platform (UWP) features to it but cannot afford the time or resources at the moment to develop a new UWP app from scratch.

Using the bridge, you can gradually migrate your older code to UWP while still retaining the ability to run and publish your app on Windows Desktop.he but they would not want to rewrite all the code to create a new Universal Windows Platform (UWP) app to leverage Windows Store capabilities.

Anees sees that the UWP platform offers some great features that could improve the user experience like Cortana Integration, Live Tiles and Share target. Moreover, with a growing 400 million users on Windows 10, distributing the application through the Windows Store will expand the reach to millions of Windows 10 users

In addition, converting Glimpses Windows desktop application will harness the following benefits:

Streamlined deployment experience ensuring that users can confidently install an app and update it. If a user chooses to uninstall the app, it's removed completely with no trace left behind. This reduces time authoring setup experiences and keeping users up-to-date.

Automatic updates and licensing with the Windows Store's built-in licensing and automatic update facilities. Automatic update is a highly reliable and efficient mechanism because only the changed parts of files are downloaded.

With all of the above potential benefits in mind, we teamed up to work on converting and publishing the application.

Solution, steps, and delivery

The conversion process included the following steps:

Prepare to convert

Before running the app against the converter, we needed to go through the checklist of "things to consider" when converting with the Desktop to UWP Bridge. We might not have to do much to get the app ready for the conversion process, but this allows us to determine if any of the items in that checklist applies to the application so we can address it before the conversion. One major case we identified in the preparation phase was the automatic updating, the application uses squirrel framework for auto-update so the execution point would normally be
"%localappdata%\glimpses\Update.exe"
. The Windows Store actually handles licensing and automatic updating so we can remove the features that relate to those tasks from the codebase. In this case, the auto-update from squirrel framework is not necessary so we replaced the path of the executable to link to the starting point of the application "<file path>\glimpses.exe" as the following screenshot shows:

Convert using the Desktop App Converter

There are several options to convert the application including:

Desktop App Converter (DAC): A tool that automatically converts and signs the app for you.

Manual conversion with the
MakeAppx.exe
tool

Visual Studio which is similar to the manual option described above except Visual Studio does a few things for you such as generating an app package and the visual assets for your app

Third-party installers:

Advanced Installer by Caphyon

InstallShield by Flexera

WiX by FireGiant

RAD Studio by Embarcadero

InstallAware

We opted to use the Desktop App Converter (DAC) as it is convenient and automatic. The converter runs the desktop installer in an isolated Windows environment by using a clean base image provided as part of the converter download. It captures any registry and file system I/O made by the desktop installer and packages it as part of the output. The converter needs a couple of steps to be setup:

Downloading and installing the Desktop App Converter

Run the Desktop App Converter as an administrator

Download the Desktop App Converter base image (*.wim), we used Creator's Update since the version number of the base image in the name of the file should match the version number of the Windows build we had running

In the console window that started with the Desktop App Converter, we ran the command:
Set-ExecutionPolicy bypass
.

Set up the converter by running this command:
DesktopAppConverter.exe -Setup -BaseImage .\BaseImage-1XXXX.wim -Verbose
.

Restart the machine

Next, we started with converting the application which is as simple as running the
DesktopAppConverter.exe
command in the console window that opens when you start the Desktop App Converter. The command requires the following parameters to specify the package name, publisher and version number of the app.

  DesktopAppConverter.exe
  -Installer <String>
  -Destination <String>
  -PackageName <String>
  -Publisher <String>
  -Version <Version>

Our command looked like the following:

  DesktopAppConverter.exe -Installer C:\Installer\Release\ -AppExecutable glimpses.exe -Destination C:\Installer\Output
  -PackageName "glimpse" -Publisher "CN=E4D612D4-CF50-44B1-BFE7-456E75098099" -Version 1.1.10.0 -MakeAppx -Sign

Since the above command points the installer to the executable file so this will auto-update the file path in the Appmanifest.xml.

During the conversion, we faced some technical issues but we managed to resolve those and get the app working. At first, we actually tried the default command for conversion:

DesktopAppConverter.exe -Installer c:\Installer\glimpses-setup.exe -Destination ..\Appx0105 -PackageName "glimpses" -Publisher "CN=Anees" -Version 0.1.2.26 -MakeAppx -Sign -verbose

The above command failed as the application installer was packaged with Squirrel which is a set of tools and a library, to completely manage both installation and updating Desktop Windows applications. The problem was that Squirrel by default runs an update.exe which doesn’t allow the application to load. So we tried to point to the app executable as follows:

DesktopAppConverter.exe -Installer c:\Installer\glimpses-setup.exe -Destination ..\Appx0105 -PackageName "glimpses" -Publisher "CN=Anees" -Version 0.1.2.26 -AppExecutable "glimpses.exe" -MakeAppx -Sign -verbose

The above command converted the app and it worked but when we ran the UWP it would hang after we log in with either Dropbox or with a Gmail account. Trying to resolve the issue, we removed a few local settings from the code but that didn't fix it.

After further investigation in the original code base, we learned that the application writes Log files on the drive including pictures, SQLite database and a backup of the documents in an encrypted format. So we tried to move this logic from the AppData to MyDocuments but the issue persisted.

Next, we tried removing the log files which were generated in the actual installation folder but still, the problem was not solved.

Finally, we noticed that the SDK "Awesomium" being used in the application was creating a
debug.log
file in the installation folder as soon as the user logs in and that was causing the application to hang and crashing on the Main Page load.

The application code depended heavily on the SDK so we couldn't remove that and the only other alternative was to disable the logging which the SDK doesn’t allow. As a workaround, we opted to create a file as debug.log in the installation folder and with read-only permission which solved our problem. With this resolution, the SDK tries to write but is unsuccessful which is not a major issue to the function of the application and hence the app runs fine and doesn't crash.

Create Package and Publish

After we ran the converted app and verified that it is working fine, we needed to sign the app for distribution so it can be published to the store.

We converted the final version of the
exe
using the following command:
DesktopAppConverter.exe -Installer C:\Installer\Release\ -AppExecutable glimpses.exe -Destination C:\Installer\Output -PackageName "glimpse" -Publisher "CN=MyPublisher" -Version 0.0.0.1

Edit and save the app manifest (
appxmanifest.xml)
file to add the Store App Identity details by updating the
DisplayName
,
PublisherDisplayName
, and
Description
values.

Next, we created new assets and added those to the assets folder with the path to the icons in the
appxmanifest.xml
and changed the version to
1.1.10.0

Last step was to create the App package that we will upload to the store, from the Visual Studio developer command window, we executed the following command in the output folder which was created during the conversion:
makeappx.exe pack /d PackageFiles /p “glimpse.appx” /l

Below are two screenshots of the UWP on the Start Screen and the UWP running:

Conclusion

Enclosing, the application is now available on the Windows Store for download and we have the Desktop App Converter to thank for that. Glimpses was able to achieve the following with this conversion:

Increase their reach and drive their users to the Windows Store using the Microsoft badge on their website

Streamline and simplify the deployment and update experience

Prepare the application to incorporate new features from the UWP platform in order to provide the Windows users with great experience

The Microsoft Office 365 team is challenging developers and makers across the globe to use Microsoft Office 365 APIs and Add-ins to boost productivity in every area of your life.

Hack Productivity, a new online hackathon from Microsoft with $32,500 in prizes for apps that help people make stuff happen — with ease

Hack Productivity gives developers access to the Office 365 APIs for mail, calendar, contacts, photo/video, and files so they can create tech solutions that allow people to do everything they set out to do, and more. As an added challenge, they are also asking you to build an entirely new Add-in (extension) for your app.

If you wish to enter,your solution needs to help people manage their lives — but how is totally up to you. For instance, you could build an app that:

helps people create photo albums with images shared by their friends

creates a weekly schedule for everyone in the household

collates a daily to-do list based on incoming email

creates a filing system for school assignments and research work

designs a new collaboration system for the office

suggests a friend date when you haven’t seen one of your contacts in awhile

uses Pavlovian push notifications to defeat procrastination

The cherry-on-top, a prize :). Your time-saving, achievement-producing app will be up cash prizes, plus some other shoutout-worthy swag:

meeting w/ a Microsoft product exec

one-year allowance on a premium Office 365 service

expenses-paid trip to a Microsoft conference

Surface products

They will be providing lots of support throughout the hackathon, including online office hours, tutorials, and tech tips. So check off the first thing on your to-do list: Register & start building your productivity hack @ msoffice365.devpost.com.

Cross-post from my blog http://code4word.com/
----------------------------------------------

Hello developers!

Just wanted to share with you a newly released "Awesome" JavaScript Library called X-Tag.

X-Tag is a Microsoft supported, open source, JavaScript library that wraps the W3C standard Web Components family of APIs to provide a compact, feature-rich interface for rapid component development. Now, while X-Tag offers feature hooks for all Web Component APIs (Custom Elements, Shadow DOM, Templates, and HTML Imports), it only requires Custom Element support to operate.
As a fallback mechanism, X-Tag also uses a set of polyfills shared with Google’s Polymer framework, in case there was no native support for the Custom Element.

The X-Tag has a wide Browser Support:

Edge (all versions and devices) and Internet Explorer 9+

Firefox (all versions, devices, and platforms)

Chrome (all versions, devices, and platforms) and Android 4+ stock browser

Safari and Safari iOS 5+

Opera 11+ (all devices and platforms)

Just in case you missed out on Web Components and might be wondering what on earth is this?

Web components are encapsulated, reusable and composable widgets for the web platform. Basically it is a collection of standards being worked out at the W3C. In summary, web components allow you to bundle markup and styles into custom HTML elements. Its introduction was very significant to web development because it can harness the power and extensibility necessary to build some complex widgets and applications right into the core web feature set. So, go ahead and picture the capabilities of JavaScript libraries like Angular and Backbone, but as a foundation of the web platform, standardised across all browsers.

Cheers!

Hi all, Event Hubs is one of the ways of ingesting data into Microsoft Azure cloud. It is a temporary means of messaging storage under service bus. It essentially works as a parallel queue, and uses a “producer consumer” like principle. Event hubs is one of the early modules that enables strong IoT scenarios in Azure and is being used widely in many data scenarios. It also is capable of delivering high bandwidth server to server communication bridging. In any case, one of the most common questions I receive is “How do I make sure the module is working?” Being one the very first steps to connect your IoT device to the cloud, you may want some verification around if it actually received your data or not.

Code Side Verification

One of the first steps should be code side verification. Below is a C# sample that uses the service bus sdk. It implements a try,catch structure to make sure the EventHubClient.Send() returns properly.

private EventHubClient _eventHubClient;

try
            {

                var serialisedString = JsonConvert.SerializeObject(TwitterPayloadData);
                EventData data = new EventData(Encoding.UTF8.GetBytes(serialisedString)) { PartitionKey = TwitterPayloadData.Topic };
                _eventHubClient.Send(data);

                Console.ForegroundColor = ConsoleColor.Yellow;
                Console.WriteLine("Sending" + serialisedString + " at: " + TwitterPayloadData.CreatedAt.ToString() );

            }

catch (Exception ex)
            {

            }

Event Hubs Monitoring

Let’s take a look at the cloud side of things. In the Azure Portal under Service Bus > EventHubs , under the dashboard tab, you should see if it receives any messages. It may take a minute or two for the graph to update.

Sampling Data Using Stream Analytics

One other way I like using personally is using Stream Analytics as a consumer for the Event Hubs and see some actual data.

Couple of words around Stream Analytics, it is a PaaS module on Azure for real-time data analytics and event processing. Chances are you might want to use one if you are doing any sort of IoT implementation on Azure. For the scope of this blog ,we will use SA for testing and verifying the messages that the Event Hubs receive.

You can find Stream Analytics under Data Services in the “new” menu bottom left. When you follow the wizard, it will automatically identify the EventHubs that you have in your account. At this point you may choose to get data from an Event Hub that is located on a different account. Give your input an alias name and finish the wizard. The input name is important for identification purposes in the query section. Query is used to do actual processing on the data which will be covered in a different post.

Once you’ve created your input for the SA, on the bottom bar you will see a “SAMPLE DATA” button. GITEX (Gulf Innovation Technology Exhibition) is an annual technology exhibition and conference that takes place in Dubai at DWTC. This is a brief overview about the innovative demo around IoT for Cars showcased on Surface Hub devices at the Microsoft stand at GITEX this year.

The Concept

The concept is around IoT for Vehicles and analyzing the potential capability of using Azure big data collection and analysis solutions over the information we could retrieve from vehicles by embedding sensors in cars (in fact any vehicle in general). Using IoT devices like Raspberry-Pi 2 running Windows 10 core, we could connect to the OBD (On-Board Diagnostics) port of the car and tap into intricate vehicle information like vehicle speed, fuel consumption, airbag information, engine failure etc. These devices are connected to cloud and push data coming from OBD ports as well as other sensors on IoT devices like GPS, accelerometer, gyro sensor etc. to the cloud through Azure event hubs. Azure event hubs is capable of streaming millions of events per second from multiple cars so we could analyze this enormous amount of data coming from connected vehicles using Azure stream analytics that performs real time data analytics over the connected cars solution. These information could be fetched to display real time connected cars data on a dashboard like this:

In alignment with Microsoft’s City Next transportation solutions concept, the app showcases a few possible scenarios in a smarter city with connected cars - Virtual Radars, Emergency and Dispatch solutions, Toll & Fare Management, Parking Management etc.

Virtual Radars

Using IoT devices on cars, we could replace all physical speed radars in the city with virtual radars by geo-fencing the road and setting the speed limit of these roads on cloud. Speed radars are usually placed at indeterminate intervals and the range at which it could capture speeding is limited. Unsafe drivers tend to speed in between radars and slow down as soon as they spot a speed camera thus resulting in unsafe driving behaviors. But with this system the entire road would be geo-fenced and the responsible authority would get a notification when any car is speeding at any point of time. Also, this removes the infrastructure and maintenance costs for speed radar systems. We also have new radars being installed that could detect tail-gating (not keeping a safe distance with the vehicle in front). But connected cars may have proximity sensors that could identify how close the vehicle in front is. It also has accelerometers & gyro sensors that could identify swift lane changes and notify police of reckless drivers.

Emergency and Dispatch

As mentioned earlier using this system we could retrieve information on air bag deployments and engine failure. So when an accident happens a notification is sent to the respective authority along with vehicle information reporting an emergency situation. Dispatch vehicles like police vehicles, ambulances, fire engines etc. are also connected vehicles. So the rescue authorities would have visibility to the closest dispatch vehicles available and could remote dispatch these vehicles for a faster response.

Toll Management

This system could also replace physical toll gate infrastructure with virtual toll gates. So soon as a vehicle crosses a geo-fenced virtual toll zone the amount will be deducted from the vehicle’s payment account. On the dashboard, we could see a real time depiction (on Power Maps) of the number of cars crossing toll gates and corresponding revenue.

Parking Management

A smart parking solution is not just about enabling road users to find a parking space easily, instead the system focuses on providing an intelligent parking management system where parking fares are automatically deducted for public parking spots. By geo-fencing parking locations, soon as a car enters a parking location and parks for more than 5 minutes, the vehicle will be charged based on the parking zone and time – amount will be deducted from the vehicle’s payment account. This system would also enable improved urban planning by providing information on occupancy percentage of parking lots, so the government would know where to build a parking location with minimal infrastructure investment or add additional parking lots.

Carbon footprint

Fuel consumption data retrieved per vehicle in turn lets us calculate the carbon footprint and analyze this data to ensure energy efficiency around the city in order to contribute to a cleaner and sustainable future. We could also use fuel consumption data to predict (using Azure Machine learning and predictive analysis) on how much fuel would be consumed in the city for next month/next year etc.

Traffic Management

While cities around the world strive to find effective solutions for traffic gridlocks, connected cars itself could contribute to major elucidation of traffic congestions not just by providing a quantitative report on the intensity of traffic, but also by having traffic data (coming from connected cars) available to motorists to direct them down the most efficient routes in terms of traffic. Intelligent toll systems as discussed above could also be used to control traffic flow by adjusting toll fares based on traffic volume. Traffic flow could also be optimized by intelligent traffic lights that adjust operation times or duration to traffic conditions.

Single point payment system for all road services

With virtual radars, vehicle monitoring, virtual toll gates and intelligent parking systems, we could have a single point payment system for using all road services. So every car would have a payment account associated with it, that could be recharged to use road services and get reports on toll, parking and fines over a period of time.
