To make these localized materials better suited and available for local developers we decided to put on a unique community localization project for the 88 Microsoft MVPs and 32 community leaders from China, Japan, and Korea. We called it Microsoft Three Musketeers! Here’s what we go up to.

It was a fun, competition-style event where attendees competed in various activities, such as adding suggestions through Pull Request about critical localization error and the lack of explanation on existing localized technical documentation (docs.microsoft.com), and voting or adding new strings suggestions on Microsoft Localization Community Platform (MLCP).

Participants also created attractive blog and social media content, demonstrating how best to join the community localization on docs.microsoft.com and MLCP, and Microsoft Learn.

Their passion to improve the quality of the localized contents and products brought about a significant result. Surprisingly, the number of approved suggestions on docs.microsoft.com reached 7,000, and 4,300 strings were newly approved on MLCP during this project in a single month! What’s more, community localization introduction content reached 21,000, resulting in more members understanding and getting to know the open community activities on Microsoft Docs, MLCP and Microsoft Learn thanks to the participants’ efforts.

After the competition we held a Celebration Day Event in each country with the participants. Microsoft HQ DevRel Localization Team members joined this event and celebrated for our great “Musketeers.”

Christian Stahl is a Reconnect Member who is heavily invested in giving back to his community using Microsoft technologies. He was awarded Microsoft MVP in SharePoint Server in 2011 for four years and has just started a new job as Senior Enterprise Architect at Tieto in Sweden.

Christian has used his skills and knowledge in SharePoint in various local projects. Working as the main front-end developer, and in architectural roles, Christian has been involved in large and complex SharePoint assignments for all schools in Stockholm, Sweden. He has helped give access to students, teachers and parents across the country. This has resulted in one million user accounts spanning from SharePoint server to SharePoint online with integrations to several APIs, Azure integrations and mobile apps. He said, “What has been especially fun is that I got the chance to deepen myself in the latest technologies in SharePoint Online development such as SPFx, React, TypeScript, SASS etc. A great and challenging project!”

As an MVP Christian regularly participated in the Global Summit in Redmond each year - “I must say that has been my favorite conference because it was fantastic to meet so many talented and committed people under one roof.” As a Reconnect Member Christian continues to attend local community connections and stays connected with former MVPs through the Reconnect Yammer channel and other webinars and tech calls. Christian also attended the MVP Community Connection that was held in Lyngby, Denmark for all Nordic and Benelux MVPs and Reconnect Members. “It was a great event packed with lots of valuable information on what’s going on in the Microsoft stack,” said Christian.

Christian is also a member of the international network Azure Office SharePoint (AoS) as an ambassador for his home country Sweden. As well as mentoring students in programming, he speaks regularly at national and international conferences whenever he can. Just over a year ago he was in Bangalore and Mumbai for the AoS Microsoft tour, and next month he is invited to speak at the Swedish Share and Evolve in Office 365 Forum (SEF). On top of his consultancy work in SharePoint, Christian also teaches front end developing for students in higher vocational education in Stockholm.

Looking to the future Christian is excited about his new role at Tieto and the opportunities it will open in up in terms of participating more actively in the community.

Afzaal Ahmad Zeeshan is a Reconnect Member and Software Engineer from Rabwah, Pakistan. He was awarded Microsoft MVP in Visual Studio and Development Technologies in 2016 and has since enjoyed being part of the community, particularly the Microsoft Community Connection in Dubai.

“Being a Reconnect MVP allows me to stay in touch with all the awesome MVPs that I have collaborated with in the past, and to grow the experts-circle I have,” said Afzaal. It has also been the perfect platform for him to continue sharing his activities and contributions with flexibility and ease.

Afzaal is currently working with various online and offline communities, including C# Corner Lahore Chapter. You will usually find him participating in speaking sessions for these communities or exploring new venues and cities to “start more local chapters.” Afzaal has his sights set on participating more actively in local development groups, mentoring students, and to become “some sort of an evangelist.”

His most recent projects involve using AI-based forms for user input and sentiment analysis. One such project includes an application for tourists, allowing them to find their tour spots, tourism providers, and other related information quickly through the app. Alongside this, Afzaal’s interests lie in all things mobile, cloud, database and more!

“…if you want to do great things you need to do little things in a great way first.”

Johan Åhlén is a Reconnect Member with a passion for exploring and making sense of data. He has been familiar with Microsoft SQL Server for over 20 years, and has also worked with .NET, C#, ASP.NET, MVC, Azure, Xamarin and Microsoft AI, to name a few. Johan was awarded Microsoft Data Platform MVP in 2011 until 2018, and he was also one of the first to be certified as a Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE) on SQL Servcer Data Management and Analytics. Sharing his knowledge and skills is a core part of Johan’s life; “teaching and sharing knowledge to others is the best way to learn things yourself.”

During his time as MVP, Johan focused on offline, in-person community activities. “Nothing is better for the engagement level and community building than real physical meetings,” said Johan. He was the leader of the Swedish SQL Server User Group during 2009-2016, growing the group to about 900 members. As a side-activity, the group started a triathlon team, the “SQL Server Fast Track Team”, and 35 of them even took part in the Stockholm Triathlon 2010!

“My absolute favorite project as MVP was building up PASS SQLRally Nordic, one of the largest Microsoft SQL Server conferences in the world,” added Johan. In his first year, 2011, the team booked a venue for about 500 attendees and completely sold out a month before. Johan also contributed to an MVP book written by over 50 MVPs on SQL Server. 100% of the royalties from the book went to charity.

While the MVP award was “like winning the golden ticket to Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory,” Johan maintains these MVP connections as a Reconnect member. He is still active in offline, in-person activities and enjoys speaking on his favorite technical topics. Johan has also started a regional Azure User Group which this year will run its 3rd Global Azure Bootcamp event.

Now living in a small, former fishing village outside of Malmö, Sweden, Johan divides his time between work and creating music - you can even find him on Spotify! In fact, working as a musician was how he was able to finance his first IT company.

Johan’s latest project is Boxentriq, a code-breaking puzzle game. “Boxentriq is built on Microsoft Azure and Xamarin, and is a very good example of how you can build a globally scalable mobile app and website without big costs,” said Johan. It first started in 2015, after he was inspired by the puzzles posted by Cicada 3301 (a secret organization, ranked in the top 5 eeriest, unsolved mysteries of the internet). Johan then decided to create his own puzzles, launching his first later in 2015 (in Swedish only), which became popular beyond all his expectations. Johan now has plans for a follow-up puzzle, with a plot of secret societies and clues hidden in unusual places. For example, his photo in this article (below) contains a secret code that you can try to figure out yourselves. This code-breaking guide may help!

“It was really a no-brainer to join the Reconnect program after my MVP period ended,” added Johan. “It is invaluable for staying connected with this amazing network of people, attending tech calls, and learning about cutting-edge technology. I’m very happy that this Reconnect program exists. Once an MVP, always an MVP!"
