This issue took a long time for me to workaround. My browser works inside a corpnet proxy server. In a brand new Win8 machine, I setup hosts file under %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc to redirect a site to localhost. But it didn't work in IE and other browsers. We thought it could be problem with which domain the machine is joined to. Changing the domain also didn't help. Looking at various sites in web search also didn't help.

Based on tips from various site, here is a workaround that works for me.

- Go to internet options, connections tab, click lan settings.
- click on proxy server, check "User a proxy server" and give proxy server details
- click on advanced button, under exceptions add the site to be redirected
- Make sure to enter the full site address, for example https://joyofprogramming.com not just joyofprogramming.com

Basically the browser looks at proxy server before looking into hosts file. Adding the exceptions above seem to help it.

Any better way to solve it? Will look forward in comments.

This is one painful issue that took me too long to figure out, what a waste of time! I built a simple html5 webpage with a video & audio, works perfectly in VS and in localhost mode, but once I deploy in intranet, does not work anyme in IE9! Same site works well in other browsers like Chrome. Couldn't find anything in web searches.

Finally F12 tools helped in IE. The console pointed out this error: "Display intranet sites in Compatibility View" is checked. So the compatiblity mode turned on automatically and hence none of my HTML5 specific code was recognized. I tried to find where it is checked in the internet options dialog, but could not find out.

The solution is to force use of IE9 in intranet environment by using below tag:

<meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=9" />

I had a weird issue today. I am calling an external website using WebClient inside my WCF application, and I consistently got this error in WebClient call: "The remote server returned an error: NotFound". The error did not give me enough clues. To debug it, I ran fiddler and to my surprise, the error doesn't happen when running fiddler. The error occurs only when not running fiddler.

Did a web search and suprised that no one seem to have hit it before. So writing this post. I asked my colleague Gopal Srinivasa and he immediately pointed out that we are behind proxy and we need to install Firewall Client/web proxy and it immediately solved the issue!

I had deployed a silverlight application in my location machine and tried to access it from another machine. Surprisingly, there was no response sent by server. I tried to go to https://<machinename> , no response, no error nothing. Using fiddler also showed no response. Searching in web also gave no good results. Uninstalled & reinstalled IIS, no luck.

Only after a day, an intuition hit me to check the firewall settings. Simply enabiling www service rule fixed it! In retrospect, it seems like an obvious thing to check, but it was not. I wonder why reinstalling IIS didn't automatically add this firewall rule. Anyway, posting it in case someone finds same problem.

Error: Unhandled Error in Silverlight Application Code: 2103 Category: InitializeError Message: Invalid or malformed application: Check manifest

In silverlight 3, it turns out that the refactoring of namespaces causes this. Very unintuitive error. I had added default App class under a namespace, but missed to change the startup object.

It was great pleasure getting feedback from TFS customers on getting their problems addressed with my technical posts mainly on workitemtracking. After I left TFS team, I had stopped blogging a year back. As TFS evolves, many of my previous posts will become obsolete.

Now I am working on some cool Silverlight and WPF problems in new project and am planning to post technical problems I face and solutions I found. Hopefully it'll come up in search results for people facing similar problems. So, the blog will not be anymore about workitemtracking in TFS, instead, plethora of technical items, mostly problems I faced and pointers to resolutions.
