The Office 365 Security and Compliance centre is gradually becoming a one stop shop for security and compliance features from across Office 365. I should add at this point (03/08/2016) that not all compliance and security features have been moved here yet. The S&CC gives you a central point for accessing a number of features some of which work within the new UI and some that link back to the existing admin consoles. This isn't a comprehensive list of features but a quick overview and selection of my notes that i have jotted down for customer work.

These features include:

Feature

Description

Resources

Alerts

Alerts is where you will find access to the threat management features of Office 365. O365 can baseline user behaviour and raise alerts based on real time events. For example if a user attempts to logon from two remote locations in quick succession this will raise a security alert to the alerts dashboard.

Permissions

The S&CC requires that users are assigned permission to access its features. There are a number of roles available which utilise the RBAC model introduced in Exchange 2010. Be aware that some compliance features require you to have access to the RBAC roles for the specific product e.g. Exchange online discovery search.

Available roles today are:

Compliance Administrator

eDiscovery Manager

Organization Management (Not to be confused with Exchange)

Reviewer

Service Assurance User

Supervisory Review

In this section you will be importing data into Office 365 or creating retention and preservation policies for Exchange, SharePoint, one drive and S4B. When using reservation you can place the entire contents of the specified mailbox or site, or use a query to hold specific data.

Life moves pretty fast…

The interface changes quite a lot as features are added so it's worth checking in on it regularly or keeping an eye on the Office blog.

Compliance Centre PowerShell

There are loads of cmdlets available for use in the management shell for S&CC. You have the ability to manage compliance searches (eDiscovery), data loss prevention, retention, preservation, and permissions.

A full list of cmdlets can be found here https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/mt587093(v=exchg.160).aspx

Why can't I see the compliance centre cmdlets in my Exchange online powershell session?

This is due to the compliance centre having a separate powershell instance and you need to connect to https://ps.compliance.protection.outlook.com/powershell-liveid/ instead of https://outlook.office365.com/powershell-liveid

1. Set your credentials {$UserCredential = Get-Credential}

2. Input your credentials and click OK

2. Create the session. {$Session = New-PSSession -ConfigurationName Microsoft.Exchange -ConnectionUri https://ps.compliance.protection.outlook.com/powershell-liveid/ -Credential $UserCredential -Authentication Basic -AllowRedirection}

I am often asked how to check the Powershell version when on customer sites so I've jotted it down here. (Also for my own benefit :))

1: Open the Powershell Console.
