A question we sometimes get here on the Microsoft Operations Management Suite team is “Why is my...

A question we sometimes get here on the Microsoft Operations Management Suite team is “Why is my data usage primarily being used by System?” This typically comes from a customer who views their Usage per Solution graph in the OMS portal and sees something like this:

While this may initially seem confusing, System is the category for data that isn’t directly attributed to an OMS Solution. You should only see this on Operations Manager attached environments, therefore the more computers managed by Operations Manager, the larger the volume of this System data. Conversely, if you are not connecting OMS to an existing System Center Operations Manager environment then you may not see a category for System at all.

J.C.
Once you have everything configured in Microsoft Operations Management Suite (OMS), you might find...

Once you have everything configured in Microsoft Operations Management Suite (OMS), you might find yourself wondering if everything is actually working as expected. This is especially true if you have quite a few agents. Here are some tips that will help verify that everything is up and running as designed.

The first place to look is at the Usage tile. You’ll see this when you log in to the portal:

This will give some indication as to whether things are getting uploaded or not. Clicking on the Usage tile provides more detail:

Now while this is helpful, it does not show whether or not every agent is reporting in. However, if your subscription is having an issue with processing or billing, it will be indicated here.

Back on the main page, the Settings tile gives a better indication of agent status, as shown below:

In this example, we can see that I have two agents connected and that overall things appear to be well. Clicking on the Settings tile will provide even more information:

From here you can click on Connected Sources and it will show how many servers and any System Center Operations Manager Management Groups that are connected, as shown below.

If you click on the number of servers connected you can get more detail. This launches the log search function which gives us the basic queries needed to see if our agents are communicating and what their current status is:

You can then drill into the computer data by clicking on each object.

Alternatively, you can get the same data by going directly to log search and running the following query:

ObjectName!="Advisor Metrics" ObjectName!=ManagedSpace | measure max(TimeGenerated) by Computer | Sort Computer

Yet another way of searching for this data is by using the General Exploration queries under log search as shown here:

The first item circled above will allow you to see the computers reporting in, whereas the second item circled will show you the computers that have not reported in.

Hope this helps, and if you are having issues with your agents reporting in, please see the guidance in the following blog post that may help:

1. The server clock is out of sync with the current time by more than 5 minutes. You can resolve this pretty easily by changing the clock time on your server to match the current time. Do this by opening a CMD prompt as an Administrator and running w32tm /resync. Note that even if your clock says it is synchronized (e.g. with your company’s time server), it might still be out of sync with the one of our servers in Microsoft Azure. Since the time window is only 5 minutes, this is not unusual. Verify that you are synchronizing with a reliable time server ON THE INTERNET. You can further troubleshoot this type of issue by enabling Verbose tracing on the Management Server/Console computer. For more information see the following:

But if it only happens sporadically (i.e. a couple of times per day) then everything should be fine, as data will be queued and retransmitted.
Some of the HTTP error codes have some special meanings, i.e.:
- the FIRST time that a MMA direct agent or management server tries to send data to our service, it will get a 500 error with an inner 404 error code – 404 means not found; this indicates that the storage area we’ll use for this new workspace of yours isn’t quite ready yet – it is being provisioned. On next retry, this will however be ready and flow will start working (under normal conditions).
A 403 might indicate a permission/credential issue, and so forth. There are more information on the 403 below in the Direct agent specific section of this post.

Check in the Operational Insights portal to see if your clients are reporting in. From the Overview page, navigate to the large blue SETTINGS tile - it will be either the first or last tile depending on your configuration state. In SETTINGS, click the CONNECTED SOURCES tab. Each column on this page represents a different data source type attached (servers attached directly, OpsMgr management groups and Azure storage accounts). Clicking the blue "X servers/mgmt groups/storage accounts connected" will bring you to a search with more detail. On this page you will also see a list of individual management groups connected. Clicking one of these management groups will also bring you to a search and show you a list of the servers connected to this management group.

NOTE: If a data source is listed as reporting on this page, it does not necessarily mean we have collected any data from the source. In this case it's possible that drilling into search from this page will show inconsistent results (e.g. you'll see a data source listed in CONNNECTED SOURCES, but it won't be in search). Once data collection has started, either from an IP or from log collection, the results in search will be consistent.

Other things that we are currently tracking for Direct Agent:

Capacity Management Intelligence Pack does NOT work with Direct Agent; only with Operations Manager. In fact it needs even Operations Manager to be integrated with System Center Virtual Machine Manager. We are tracking ideas to either generalize it starting here https://feedback.azure.com/forums/267889-azure-operational-insights/suggestions/6662146-open-up-the-capacity-management-pack-for-other-sys.

Alert Management Intelligence Pack does NOT work with Direct Agent; it depends on and requires Operations Manager whose alerts it synchronizes to the cloud.

Malware Assessment works, other than for the same symptom noted above for Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7.

Update Assessment, Change Tracking as well as Log management Intelligence Packs for collecting Windows Events and IIS Logs works for both SCOM and Direct Agent already.

If you need documentation on how to install the agent (also in a scripted/unattended way) check the documentation here:

https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/articles/operational-insights-direct-agent/

If needed, Direct Agent supports passing thru proxy and there is a PowerShell script in the documentation above that you can use to configure which proxy and credentials to use on the agent. Note that it’s an application-specific setting. No processes other than MMA’s need to be be able to know how to reach the internet.

If your VM is in Azure you can one-click install/enable the agent from the Azure portal:

https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/updates/easily-enable-operational-insights-for-azure-virtual-machines/

We currently only have a 64-bit version of the agent. 32-bit is tracked here:

WINDOWS AZURE DIAGNOSTICS INFORMATION

Log management thru Azure Portal integration allows you to also ingest Windows events from Windows Azure Diagnostics (WAD) storage. This works for Cloud Services roles and IaaS VMs configured to write to WAD.

Collecting IIS Logs from WAD works for Cloud Services and for IaaS VMs but not currently for Azure Web Sites. This is tracked here:

At the core of Microsoft Operations Manager Suite (OMS) is the log search feature which allows you to combine and correlate machine data from multiple sources within your environment. Solutions are also powered by log search to bring you metrics pivoted around a particular problem area.

On the Search page, you can create a query, and then when you search, you can filter the results by using facet controls. You can also create advanced queries to transform, filter, and report on your results.

Common log search queries appear on most solution pages. Throughout the OMS console, you can click tiles or drill in to other items to view details about the item by using log search.

Getting Started

After logging into your portal, in the top left corner of the home screen you will see the Log Search tile. This is at the core of using OMS.

When you click the Log Search tile you are brought to the following screen:

Here you can use the dropdown to choose the time range you want to search. In the example below we’ll choose 7 days:

When typing in your search string, notice that Autocomplete is available. There are currently three categories of Autocomplete that get suggested to users:

1. Available Fields: This is a partial list of what fields are available to search.

For a reference of fields that are available, see the Search field and facet reference section in the following document in the Microsoft TechNet Library:

OMS search reference

2. Recent Searches: These are items that you searched for recently. This helps you save time when running similar searches.

3. Saved Searches: These are searches that have been saved as useful. By clicking the Save icon after a search is run, you can add that search to this list. The search page features these saved searches, plus some additional searches that get added with each solution pack.

Filtering is available on the left hand side of the search screen. These filters can save a lot of time and effort as when these are selected they add the appropriate syntax to your search string automatically. For example, doing a search on Type=Perf gives the options to narrow it down by Computer, ObjectName, CounterName, InstanceName and CounterPath.

You can also add fields by clicking the +Add button at the lower left hand corner of the search screen to get additional filters that may be of interest, as shown below.

Filtering on time is available by using the time window box in the top left if you want to drill into the data.

Clicking on the bar will drill into that 6-hour time frame so that you can get a better idea of what occurred during that time frame. You can continue to drill down to see a specific time range:

Going further

The corresponding results will be displayed in the search results on the right pane so that you can see what computer, performance counter or other detail that is applicable to that time frame.

Also, once you complete a search, you can export your results to Excel by clicking the Export button at the bottom of the screen. This will create a .csv file of your results.

Additional automated log searches can be done with the Log Search API. See the following for more information:

Examples

NOTE The examples below only work if you have enabled the log collection for the data types being discussed, if you get 0 results from these searched verify that you have enabled that data type and your machines are communicating with your OMS workspace successfully.

To search on IIS logs, type the following command into the search: Type=W3CIISLog. To break this down further you can use the Measure command with different functions.

To search near-real time performance data, type the follow command into search: Type = Perf. This will return all performance counters that are being collected for your environment by OMS.

Note that there are two different types of value returned for this search: Logs and Metrics.

Logs are 30 minute aggregated values of the performance counter. These are stored based on your data plan with OMS. See https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/server-cloud/operations-management-suite/pricing.aspx for details on data plans.

Metrics are the raw results for each of the performance counters configured and are stored for 14 days.

To further filter your performance data, you can also add more parameters to your search to find exactly what machine is affected or other things that may interest you. For example, if you want to return all performance data for a specific computer you can use the following:

Type = Perf Computer=”ComputerName”

If you want to return performance data for the Current Disk Queue Length counter across all servers you can run the following:

Type = Perf CounterName=”Current Disk Queue Length”

You can even combine the examples to give you the Current Disk Queue Length counter for one specific machine:

Type = Perf CounterName=”Current Disk Queue Length” Computer=”ComputerName”

You can even drill further into the performance data by decreasing the time range. For example, if you make your time range small enough (e.g. 6 hours or less), the charts will show you live data.
