Our security requires us to do a lot of crazy stuff. But one genuine ask is to disable some protocols for users to connect to the mailbox.

One important requirement most of the organizations want is to disable IMAP and POP protocol access to Mailbox. In Office 365 POP and IMAP are enabled by default for all users.

Currently, we can do it multiple ways

Use Portal and disable for each user once created.

Use Powershell connected to ExO and disable for individual user

Use Get- and Set- Commands in a single command to disable it for multiple users.

Ok, that is fine. But If we create new users?

Well, in that case, we need to redo the above steps again. Problem with this is

All admins need to be made aware of this procedure

New admins must be specifically told to perform the disable operation post creating a new mailbox.

Error prone as it can be missed(Human error)

Wouldn't it be nice if we could just create a new mailbox and things are set the way they we want?

To do this we need to follow the below

Get-CASMailboxPlan | fl Name

Name : ExchangeOnline-449cbb2645664646

Name : ExchangeOnlineDeskless-3a08d145664564

Name : ExchangeOnlineEnterprise-a0ce8d44545

Name : ExchangeOnlineEssentials-912457c782-7

Now we need to change the mailbox Plan so that IMAP and POP protocol is disabled by default. I am doing this for Enterprise plan.

Set-CASMailboxPlan ExchangeOnlineEnterprise-a0ce8d44545 -ImapEnabled $false -PopEnabled $false

Now when we create a new mailbox, by default the POP and IMAP protocol for the user will be disabled.

Till now, in the last posts, we saw how one can install and configure AAD Connect. In this post, we will see how to verify the install and check and verify whether AAD Connect is syncing our users to Azure AD just fine.

Firstly, we had installed our AAD Connect in Staging mode we need to disable staging mode and enable it to SYNC.

Open the AAD Connect configuration file and click on Configure.

https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/praveenkumar/2017/01/27/testing-aadconne…part-5-verifying/

Here select "View Current Configuration" to check the current configuration.

We can see the Account that we are using for AAD Connect here. If you did not use Custom installation and used express installation you would see an account like "MSOL_xxxxx"

And the other options we selected for installing and configuring AAD Connect.

Select "Configure staging mode(current state:enabled)" and click Next.

Here give the Azure AD credentials.

Uncheck the "Enable Staging mode"

Here check the option that says "Start the Syncronization.."

Get-ADSyncScheduler output before and after enabling "Start Synchronization" as shown above

Once done, you can open the "Synchronization Service Manager" > Connectors > On-Prem Connector.

Here we can click on Containers and see the OU filtering we had selected earlier and do any changes that are required.

Synchronization Service Manager can we viewed to see the Sync status as shown below

On the first Sync, it added 57 On-prem objects to the cloud.

We can click on the ADDs to see the accounts that were added.

Selecting any object will give us details about that specific account.

Connect to MSOL PowerShell to check the objects that are being Synced as shown below.

In portal, we can check the DirSync Status as shown below

We saw the account that AAD Connect is using for syncing. If we go to services.msc and select the Microsoft Azure AD SYNC service we can see an account like "AAD_xxxx". It is a local service account is created by the installation wizard.`

The account is created with a long complex password that does not expire.
This account is used to store the passwords for the other accounts in a secure way. These other accounts passwords are stored encrypted in the database. The private keys for the encryption keys are protected with the cryptographic services secret-key encryption using Windows Data Protection API (DPAPI). You should not reset the password on the service account since Windows will then destroy the encryption keys for security reasons.

You should not reset the password on the service account since Windows will then destroy the encryption keys for security reasons.

We can check the same is AD users and computers.

We see that AAD_xxxx is also part of ADSYNCadmins group.

There are other ADSYNC groups that are created as shown below

ADSyncAdmins

ADSyncBrowse

ADSyncOperators

ADsyncPasswordSet

We also have AzureADSSOACC is the account that will be used for single sign on. When you enable Single Sign-on for either Password Sync or Pass through Authentication. This account is created on on-premise which is used to encrypt the KERBEROS ticket that is being given to the client to be consumed by Azure AD

Now that we have installed all the pre-requisites, went ahead and started the AAD Connect EXE.

Start the install

Our domain is Praveen.local , its not internet rotatable domain(.local). We will change this later. We have it now as .local so that we can see the error and warning we get.

We will use Custom setting so that we can see all the options. If we have a small org and we are not going to do any configuration we can Use Express Settings

In the below screenshot you can see that we can set the below

Location to install AAD Connect

If we have a Pre-existing SQL Server its settings(If we are not using Windows Internal Database, In this post, we will talk about doing an install which uses the WID)

If we have an existing Service account that should be used for this that has local admin credentials on this server

Any custom Sync groups that you want to sync

For your advantage took a screenshot at regular interval which shows the different stages of this installation.

Once the wizard performs the necessary configuration. We get the option to choose how we want our users to Sign-In to Office 365.

Post selecting the User Sign-in option, we will get the option to choose the office 365 account that has global admin permissions.

The below get configured.

Now that we have given Office 365 GA account, now we need to give a service account that has permissions to read and write to our on-premise AD.

Next, we will get a list of all the UPNs defined in our organization. The main aim to use the .local domain in on-prem is for seeing this error.

We have to add an alternative UPN suffix that is internet route-able and our company owns.

Note: It's better to fix this problem before moving ahead. I am not going to fix this as I want to capture the further details.

Here we can also choose the on-prem attribute that will be used as the username in the cloud.
It's best to leave it as userPrincipalName

Next option in the wizard is very important and what many folks might use. Its selecting Domain and OU filtering.

Here I have created an OU called "Non Syncing OU", and I am not going to sync that OU.

If we have multiple on-prem Org syncing to one Office 365 tenant (azure AD), next Option in the wizard helps us select how the same objects in different On-prem orgs are represented once in Azure AD.
Also, we can choose which on-prem attribute is used to link the cloud user with the on-prem user.

Next, we get an option to select additional features if we want to select any.

Uncheck the option that says "Start Synchronization" unless you want to Sync the directory to the cloud.

Here I am un-checking the "Start Synchronization" and "checking the "Staging mode"

Now that we have completed the wizard we can exit

Note: Staging mode is used when you already have an AADConnect server syncing to the cloud, but as a backup for quick turnover if the primary server goes down you need another server which is ready to take its place then we use, Staging mode. I am just showing the option is available.

In the next post, we will complete the Synchronization and take note of few checklist.

In the last post, we saw "Requirements and Prerequisites" for installing Exchange 2016.

In this post we will be will look into the installation process.

We can either do a CMD line or a GUI based install. Here I will be showing how to do a GUI based install.

Double-click on the "setup.exe" and follow the wizard as show below

One of the Pre-requisites is to install Microsoft Unified Communications Managed API 4.0, I had downloaded but did not install it. The Wizard informs us to install it.

I installed the "Microsoft Unified Communications Managed API 4.0" without closing this exchange installation wizard

Now clicked on "retry" on exchange installation wizard.

Now the Exchange Install is complete. Opened Exchange Powershell and executed some exchange commands.

We can launch the Exchange admin center using either of the below URLs out of box

https://localhost/ecp/?ExchClientVer=15 (Cert error will be there)

https:///ecp/?ExchClientVer=15 (No Cert error as we have a self-signed cert)
