Migrating SP 2010 classic content database to SP 2013 Claims web app. The Test-SPContentdatabase command complains that the database is still in classic mode.

Steps that were performed:

• Created a new classic web app from PS - http://SPWEB:8080
•    Mounted the 2010 database.
• Post this we followed steps on the TechNet - Migrate from classic-mode to claims-based authentication in SharePoint 2013 http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg251985.aspx

        $WebAppName = "http:// SPWEB:8080"
$wa = get-SPWebapplication $WebAppName
$wa.UseClaimsAuthentication = $true
$wa.Update()

        $account = "yourDomain\yourUser"
$account = (New-SPClaimsPrincipal -identity $account -identitytype 1).ToEncodedString()
$wa = get-SPWebApplication $WebAppName
$zp = $wa.ZonePolicies("Default")
$p = $zp.Add($account,"PSPolicy")
$fc=$wa.PolicyRoles.GetSpecialRole("FullControl")
$p.PolicyRoleBindings.Add($fc)
$wa.Update()

        $wa.MigrateUsers($true)
$wa.ProvisionGlobally()

• Post this the test-SPContentDatabase was still showing inconsistency.
• We then performed this cleanup : We wanted to remove any account that no longer existed in AD.
• Ran the below PS script to identify inactive users in the site collection [by comparing them to AD].

        $web = get-spweb "http://SPWEB:8080/sites/sitecollection"
$allusers = $web.siteusers
$array = @()
foreach($user in $allusers)
{
$login_full = $user.UserLogin
$elements = $login_full.split("\")
$login = $elements[1]
$ds = New-Object System.DirectoryServices.DirectorySearcher
$filter = "(&(objectCategory=User)(sAMAccountname=" + $login + "))"
$ds.Filter = $filter
if ($de = $ds.findone()) {write-host $login_full "User enabled"}
else
{
write-host $login_full "User disabled"
$array+=$login_full
}
}
$array >path\fiIe.txt

• From the output file, removed the SharePoint built in accounts and verified that the users are the ones missing from AD. Then fed the modified output file to the next script to remove such users:

        # Remove Pre-DefÌned Users
$users = get-content -path "path\fiIe.txt"
$web = get-spweb http://SPWEB:8080/sites/sitecollection
$allusers = $web.siteusers
foreach($temp in $ users)
{
write-host $temp "needs to be removed"
remove-spuser -Id $temp -web $web -Confirm:$false
}

• Post this, we checked the output of the below SQL query : We wanted to check if there are any admin accounts still listed in the database using Classic Format.

SELECT TOP 100 [tp_SiteID],[tp_Login] FROM [UserInfo] WITH (NOLOCK) WHERE tp_IsActive = 1 AND tp_SiteAdmin = 1 AND tp_Deleted = 0 and tp_Login not LIKE 'i:%'

This returned two entries, which were causing the error :
tp_SiteID tp_Login
SiteID_GUID1 c:0+.w|SID1
SITEID_GUID2 c:0+.w|SID2

• Using PowerShell, we figured that these SIDs were AD groups:

Domain\GRP1
Domain\GRP2

• We removed these two groups from SharePoint and then the test-spcontentdatabase no longer complains about claims and classic inconsistency

Below is what we are seeing: The problem was rooted outside of SharePoint, in IIS. We proved that with below steps.

+ In IIS, create a new app pool. Use a local admin domain account as the app pool identity. In the below example the App Pool is named "SecurityTokenServiceApplicationPool"
+ Run the below commands in PowerShell :

$NTAccount = new-object System.Security.Principal.NTAccount('IIS APPPOOL\SecurityTokenServiceApplicationPool')
$TranslatedToSidObject = $NTAccount.Translate( [System.Security.Principal.SecurityIdentifier])
$SID = New-Object System.Security.Principal.SecurityIdentifier($TranslatedToSidObject.Value)
$TranslatedToNTAccount = $SID.Translate([System.Security.Principal.NTAccount])
Write-host $TranslatedToSidObject.Value `t`t $TranslatedToNTAccount.Value

+ We will see failure in the commands on affected box, while it works in other environments:

$NTAccount = new-object System.Security.Principal.NTAccount('IIS APPPOOL\SecurityTokenServiceApplicationPool')
$TranslatedToSidObject = $NTAccount.Translate( [System.Security.Principal.SecurityIdentifier])
Exception calling "Translate" with "1" argument(s): "Some or all identity references could not be translated."
At line:1 char:1
+ $TranslatedToSidObject = $NTAccount.Translate( [System.Security.Principal.Securi ...
+ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
+ CategoryInfo : NotSpecified: (:) [], MethodInvocationException
+ FullyQualifiedErrorId : IdentityNotMappedException

How this was fixed:

The problem was that the Application Host Helper Service (AppHostSvc) wasn't running. The accounts were getting created just fine when we went to use the app pool (like browse the default web site using the app pool).
WAS makes sure the accounts are created and the rights are assigned when it goes to start a worker process.
The AppHostSvc, though, will create the account when you simply add the app pool to the config, whether you're using it yet or not.
This service was set to manual start. We started it and everything worked as expected. PSConfig completed.

• We can see that the failure was while activating the feature called "DocumentSet". In this process, it attempts to check if the feature is a SafeControl – for which it would need to look at the web.config file of the web application in IIS.

• This is when we found that the affected web applications had no files in the IIS virtual directory on the server. They were missing, which was causing the unexpected error at site collection creation.

How did we fix this?

• We provisioned these web applications to bring back these files:

    Add-pssnapin microsoft.sharepoint.powershell
$contentservice = [Microsoft.sharepoint.Administration.spwebservice]::contentservice
$webapp = $contentservice.webapplications | where { $_.name -match "WEB_APP_NAME" }
$webapp.provision()

• After this, we were able to create site collections on the re-provisioned web application. We tested creating a new web application, but that was timing out. So we did this on the central admin application pool in IIS:

IIS Manager > App Pool > Central Admin App Pool > Shut Down Limit > Changed this from 90 seconds to 600 Seconds

• After this we were able to create web applications from central admin site successfully.
• We also noticed that web application creation was taking unusually long to complete. One tip to improve the performance would be to disable Receive Side Scaling and TCP Offloads on the SharePoint and SQL Servers. This is explained in the article below:

Information about the TCP Chimney Offload, Receive Side Scaling - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951037

• It is likely that a timed out web application create command is what caused this issue in the first place.
• You would need to disable the settings both at the NIC Card level as well as from command prompt on both SharePoint and SQL servers.
• Please be aware that this would cause a temporary network outage on the servers, so it is best to schedule this for a downtime in the environment.

In SharePoint OnPremise, it is very easy to enumerate all the sub webs [SPWeb] of a site collection [SPSite]. This is exposed as the AllWebs property under the SPSite object – See here.

However, this is not exposed in SharePoint Online via CSOM. So in order to touch all the SPWeb objects via CSOM, we need to use recursion – and the below code sample can assist in achieving that.

A while back, we happened to work on an issue with SharePoint Incoming email. We saw that certain types of attachments were causing issues with this set up. In order to check what SharePoint was doing with the eml files in the Drop folder, we first needed to parse them like SharePoint would. Below sample code shows how this is done:

There was a requirement a while back to enumerate all the MySites [aka ODB Sites/OneDrive for Business sites/Personal Sites] present on a SharePoint Online tenant. Since there was no way to see this in the UI on the admin centre, we need to use a script to grab this information. The detection logic involved enumerating all the user profiles on the tenant, and then grabbing the personal space property [if present]. This will give us the MySites on the tenant. We are using web service calls here to accomplish this - UserProfileService.asmx
