Das diesjährige Motto lautet „Code with purpose!“.

Announcement: 4 teams represent Central Europe at the worldwide Imagine Cup 2018 finals in Seattle, USA

For the 16th time, Microsoft is organizing the worldwide Imagine Cup competition for young IT talents and student developers. The Imagine Cup offers technically interested students the opportunity to compete in teams with their own projects. This year's motto is "Code with purpose! Since 2003, more than 2 million talents from around 190 nations have taken part in the Imagine Cup. The competition offers young developers the opportunity to present their own ideas and to realize and introduce them to the market together with mentors and industry experts.

Three chances for the worldwide final of the Imagine Cup

This year, the teams qualified for the worldwide final via the Student Innovation Hacks in Karlsruhe (April 6, 2018) and Munich (April 16, 2018) or the online final, which ran until the end of April 2018. In April 2018 the national finalists were determined in the hacks and starting in May 2018 the two winning teams of the online final were determined. The four best "national teams" now have the opportunity to present their ideas to an international audience at the World Finals in the USA at the end of July 2018.

Congratulations and best wishes to the four winning teams and we are delighted that these teams will represent Central Europe with their innovative projects at the Imagine Cup 2018 worldwide finals from 22.07. to 25.07.2018 in Seattle.

We thank all participating teams, the jury was very impressed by every single project and we can only ask and encourage all teams to continue their projects and ideas. It was a head to head race and the jury's decision was not easy, given the many fantastic entries.

The worldwide final of the Imagine Cup 2018

Whatever your innovation, you can make an impact and win big – like, $100,000 big – with Imagine Cup. With prizing that includes mentorship opportunities with industry leaders, an Azure grant and cash, Imagine Cup can help you take your project to the next level.

We look forward to the innovative solutions that have successfully addressed many of the global challenges such as climate change, education and health in the past. For students, the competition can mean the start of an IT career, as the careers of previous participants show, but can also lay the foundation for national or worldwide cooperation with investors, start-ups, globally active IT and research leaders or, of course, with Microsoft itself.

In the coming days and weeks we will present each of the individual teams and share their projects in more detail. Also we will keep you posted regarding the progress from the worldwide final in Seattle.

This is a guest post by Gerd Schmidt (Microsoft Student Partner, Germany)

During the week 05.03.2018-09.03.2018 the Microsoft Student Partners from the University of Magdeburg (Maximilian Klockmann , Christian Sandkämper, Johannes Hauffe , Mohammed Khaled, Jonas Hielscher and Gerd Schmidt), Germany, has gotten active again . The team packed all 7 days of the week with a program to keep the students awake between the academic semesters and get the creativity and coding skills running again. By no means a full course, we introduced our fellow to the broad range of Microsoft services and helped them to get them running in individual C# apps. We were very thankful and were delighted to have welcomed more than 30 students daily.

Welcoming the latest batch of undergraduates in our ranks, we started the Monday with the basics in Visual Studio and C#. Being somewhat comfortable in Java, the progression was smooth and allowed us to dive into more specialized matter.
Also on Tuesday there was a bunch of input. With a workshop on WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation) a lot could be learned to build the perfect UI for an application.
From Wednesday on, the workshops got more advanced as some of our more C#-versed participants trickled in. Many had never utilized the C# multi-threading capabilities and the beauty of LINQ expressions, so we were glad to help them along.

In the afternoon there was an introductory workshop in Azure. So the first steps in Azure could be made together. For the interested reader we highly recommend the Visual Studio Dev Essentials or Microsoft Imagine to get an easy start with Azure.

On Thursday we broadened this foundation by building Azure Web Apps and play around with this set on possibilities. Afterwards we had a look at the ADO.NET framework in C# to manage and interact with our own Azure databases.

On Friday it became interactive. With the help of the Microsoft Bot Framework we explored different aspects of an automated conversation guidance. In addition to creating a simple bot, Microsoft Cognitive Services helped us add more functionality to a service bot. Other nice features to play with: the built-in Dialog-Builder and for better user interaction: the context-related information saving (stored in Azure databases).

48h Hackathon
Then the weekend was finally there - time to prove what had been learned and to throw it all together in an 48h hackathon! By this point, we were down to a core of 15 people that took the challenge finally. They implemented a bunch of great ideas as prototypes. From chatbots via WebApps up to the development of a custom API for multiplayer games to establish the connection between clients, there was a lot to admire. At the end of the Hackathon, the results of the participants were presented in a small presentation. We are pretty amazed by the level of quality that was reached in such short a time and look forward to more awesome projects being pursued during the coming term.

Impressions
Here are some impressions of the 7 days in Magdeburg. Taking into account the privacy of the participants, we have just published a few selected photos, for which we have received an approval. Thank you again to all participants!

It's that time of year again and Imagine Cup is about to start. Today we want to give you a short heads-up on what's coming up during the next couple of months.

Microsoft’s Imagine Cup 2018 is our global student technology competition designed to be the stage to present the ideas and projects of students to the world.

This year Round 1 of Imagine Cup 2018 will focus on a Central Europe wide competition bringing together the best ideas from Austria, Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland. Projects are clustered by this year's focus technologies Artificial Intelligence, Big Data and Mixed Reality. However, teams can also participate in the Wild Track and come up with something completely different.

How does it work?
This year we offer students the possibility to participate in one of three Student Innovation Hacks where Microsoft Professionals will help students enhance their idea. The Hacks will take place in Zurich, Munich and Karlsruhe throughout spring. The winning team of each Hack will move on to the World Finals representing the Central Europe region.

A fourth slot at the World Finals in the United States is awarded to the best project handed in through the Online Finals. All other submissions from the Student Innovation Hacks will also be considered in the Online Finals.

As every year, the best project at Imagine Cup can win big, like $100k big. The four teams winning our Central Europe Regional Finals will advance to the World Finals in July 2018.
