Background
==========
When a trust relationship is needed between two SharePoint Server farms, or when a farm is configured to participate in a hybrid environment, you must use a common STS certificate between the trust members. We recommend that you buy a new STS certificate from a public Certificate Authority (CA). This gives you the highest level of certificate security, and reduces the possibility that a self-signed certificate will have integration issues with other applications and services. You can use a self-signed certificate for test or pilot environments.

Cause:
=====
The certificate created by CA or Self-Signed is created without the KEYSPECS set to "AT_KEYEXCHANGE".

The KeySpec property identifies how a key generated or retrieved by Microsoft CryptoAPI (CAPI), from a Microsoft legacy Cryptographic Storage Provider (CSP), can be used.
A KeySpec value of 1, or AT_KEYEXCHANGE, can be used for signing and encryption. A value of 2, or AT_SIGNATURE, is only used for signing.
The most common KeySpec mis-configuration is using a value of 2 for a certificate other than the token signing certificate.
For certificates whose keys were generated using Cryptography Next Generation (CNG) providers, there is no concept of key specification, and the KeySpec value will always be zero.

To see a certificates value you can use the certutil command line tool.
The following is an example: This will dump the certificate information to the screen
certutil –v –store my

You will notice that ProviderType=0 for failing certificate

CERT_KEY_PROV_INFO_PROP_ID(2):

KeySpec = 0 -- XCN_AT_NONE

However, a working certificate will have below details:
CERT_KEY_PROV_INFO_PROP_ID(2):

More Information: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/identity/ad-fs/technical-reference/ad-fs-and-keyspec-property

Solution:
=======
You would require to get a new CA certificate or self-signed certificate which is created with KeySpec value of 1, or AT_KEYEXCHANGE. This is required because we cannot update the new certificate using "Set-SPSecurityTokenServiceConfig" command. The command does not have option to import the certificate and set the KeySpec value to 1.

For other applications: Changing the KeySpec value does not require the certificate to be re-generated or re-issued by the Certificate Authority. The KeySpec can be changed by re-importing the complete certificate and private key from a PFX file into the certificate store using the steps below:

Export the certificate including private key to a PFX file.

Delete the existing certificate

Open an elevated PowerShell command prompt and import the PFX file using the cmdlet syntax below, specifying the AT_KEYEXCHANGE value:
certutil –importpfx certfile.pfx AT_KEYEXCHANGE

Restart the service.

You can also generate the a self-signed certificate using below command:

New-SelfSignedCertificate -DnsName "dns.domain.com" -KeySpec "1" -HashAlgorithm "SHA256" -CertStoreLocation "cert:\LocalMachine\My"
Note: This command will run successfully on Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016

Problem description:
====================
In your SharePoint farm you start to experience that...

Problem description:
====================
In your SharePoint farm you start to experience that the timer jobs are not running normally. Like custom timer jobs or one-time timer jobs do not run once you try running it. This also affects the UPA sync service not getting started or provisioning as they create one-time timer jobs. Another good example to identify the problem is to run "Merge-SPLogFile" command that creates one-time timer jobs to collect logs from all the servers in the farm.

Cause:
======
1. Although the SharePoint Timer service was started in services.msc, the timer service instance object (this is a SharePoint farm object) may be set to “Disabled”.Use below script to get the status of all the timer instances in the farm.

$farm = Get-SPFarm
$FarmTimers = $farm.TimerService.Instances
foreach ($FT in $FarmTimers)
{
write-host "Server: " $FT.Server.Name.ToString();
write-host "Status: " $FT.status;
write-host "Allow Service Jobs: " $FT.AllowServiceJobs;
write-host "Allow Content DB Jobs: " $FT.AllowContentDatabaseJobs;"`n"
}

2. The "TimerJobHistory" table in SharePoint Config DB may have too many records which causes timer jobs not to function correctly. This is followed because "Delete job history" timer job not running for a long time. This job is supposed to purge timer job history older than 7 days.Use below SQL queries and commands to validate the possibility.

>>SQL query on your SharePoint Config DB.

Select COUNT(*) from [SharePoint_Config].[dbo].[TimerJobHistory] with(nolock)
Select Top 100 * from [SharePoint_Config].[dbo].[TimerJobHistory] with(nolock) order by StartTime

Output will show huge number of records e.g. 5 Million records. Also, will also notice that the oldest timer job history record("StartTime" column) in DB is for an older date (normal would be 7 days old). Older records are supposed to be purged by "Delete job history" timer job which, you can validate below.

>>PowerShell command on your SharePoint server.

Get-SPTimerJob | ?{$_.DisplayName -eq "Delete job history"} | fl

This will return the "LastRunTime" of the timer job. Normally this will be date when the issue started

Solution:
==========
>> For the 1st issue, you run below PowerShell command to re-provision the instance to "Online" state.

$farm = Get-SPFarm
$FarmTimers = $farm.TimerService.Instances
foreach ($FT in $FarmTimers)
{
write-host "Server: " $FT.Server.Name.ToString();
write-host "Status: " $FT.status;
write-host "Allow Service Jobs: " $FT.AllowServiceJobs;
write-host "Allow Content DB Jobs: " $FT.AllowContentDatabaseJobs;"`n"
}
$disabledTimers = $farm.TimerService.Instances | where {$_.Status -ne "Online"}
if ($disabledTimers -ne $null)
{
foreach ($timer in $disabledTimers)
{
Write-Host -ForegroundColor Red "Timer service instance on server " $timer.Server.Name " is NOT Online. Current status:" $timer.Status
Write-Host -ForegroundColor Green "Attempting to set the status of the service instance to online..."
$timer.Provision()
$timer.Start()
write-host -ForegroundColor Red "You MUST now go restart the SharePoint timer service on server " $FT.Server.Name}}
else
{
Write-Host -ForegroundColor Green "All Timer Service Instances in the farm are online. No problems found!"
}

>> For the 2nd issue, you will need Microsoft's engagement to clear out the "TimerJobHistory" table in SharePoint Config DB. This cannot be done as this is not a Microsoft supported DB operation. So, better engage Microsoft after opening a support ticket with them at https://support.microsoft.com/.
Refer this article - Support for changes to the databases that are used by Office server products and by Windows SharePoint Services

Note: Dealing with Timer instances could cause other issues with the farm. Better to open ticket with Microsoft for such issues as these may be way complex as you think.

Resolution:

Open BCS service application and click on "Set Metadata Store Permission". Add the user account (through which SPD is open) in there with Edit, Execute, Selectable in Clients and Set permissions added to the account.

Users are unable to use the Drag and Drop functionality in SharePoint Environments.

Symptoms:

Fiddler trace indicated that there was 401 Unauthorized responses being seen during the upload requests.

Cause:

The F5 virtual server’s HTTP Profile -> “Response Chunking” was set to “unchunk”

Resolution:

The F5 virtual server’s HTTP Profile -> “Response Chunking” was set to “selective”

More information:

Response Chunking: specifies how the system handles HTTP content that is chunked by a server. The default is Selective. The behavior in each mode depends on whether the server sends chunked or unchunked responses.

For content that is chunked:

Preserve: Specifies that the system processes the HTTP content, and sends the response to the client unchanged.

Selective: Specifies that the system unchunks the HTTP content, processes the data, re-adds the chunk headers, and then sends the chunked request or response to the client. Note that for chunked content, this mode is the same as the Rechunk mode.

Unchunk: Specifies that the system removes the HTTP transfer encoding headers, removes the chunk headers, processes the HTTP content, and then sends the unchunked response to the client. The system closes the connection once it sends all data.

Rechunk: Specifies that the system unchunks the HTTP content, processes the data, re-adds the chunk headers, and then sends the chunked request or response to the client.

For content that is unchunked:

Preserve: Specifies that the system processes the HTTP content, and sends the response to the client unchanged.

Selective: Specifies that the system processes the HTTP content, and sends the response to the client unchanged.

Unchunk: Specifies that the system processes the HTTP content, and sends the response to the client unchanged.

Rechunk: Specifies that the system processes the HTTP content, adds the transfer encoding and chunk headers to the response, and then sends the chunked response to the client.

In FAST ESP user administration, you accidently enabled “This User will be authenticated by an external User Management System” for the only Admin user and now after logout can’t access ESP Admin GUI. Now the next time you try login using the same “Admin” account, you receive the below error –

“There was a problem with your login request. Please verify that the username and password is correct. If you are still unable to log in please contact your administrator. [Try again.]”

To fix this issue create “Admin” user in you AD and then finish the configuration steps given TechNet article: FAST ESP / Enable ESP Administrator to use Active Directory accounts for Authentication - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2441205

Once you are able to login using the AD “Admin” account you can then revert back the original accidental changed.

Alternately, you can follow the below steps to “Disable ESP Administrator to use Active Directory accounts for Authentication” by modifying the VESPA DB

•Log into the vespa db

1. Execute the command: cd %FASTSEARCH%\rdbms\bin

2. Execute the command: psql --username fast -p 16070 vespa (If prompted for password enter ‘fast’)

•Run the below query to view the user information
