Microsoft Silverlight Analytics Framework Updated

We have just released an update to the Microsoft Silverlight Analytics Framework to include the following new features:

  • Support for Windows Phone 7
  • Support for the Microsoft Silverlight Media Framework 2.0
  • Support for Webtrends for Silverlight 4, WPF, and Windows Phone 7
  • Added support for Google Analytics for WPF and Windows Phone 7
  • Fixed numerous issues identified by the community

Windows Phone 7 Support

Since Silverlight is a primary development technology for the upcoming Windows Phone 7 mobile OS, it was straightforward to port the framework to the phones.  It will also be straightforward for analytics vendors who have already build components for Silverlight 3 and Silverlight 4 to build components for Windows Phone 7.  We will be working the the analytics vendors over the next few weeks to create versions of their components for the phone.  We have included a help topic on adding tracking to phone applications – since there are some additional steps that you need to take.

We also added a TrackLocation behavior for Windows Phone 7 as well as adding capabilities to track location (latitude/longitude) of analytics events.  Please respect your users privacy and be sure to ask when enabling location tracking on the phone!

The Silverlight Media Framework Player or the Smooth Streaming Client are not yet available for the Windows Phone 7 yet – once they are, we will put those behaviors back into the framework for the platform.

Microsoft Silverlight Media Framework 2.0

Tracking of media applications using the Microsoft Silverlight Media Framework 2.0 is now fully supported.

Webtrends Support

If you are using Webtrends, you will be happy to notice that we have included a WebtrendsAnalytics behavior for Silverlight 4, WPF, and Windows Phone 7.  Since this was built using Webtrends Data Collection API, we are excited to announce with Webtrends that we are releasing the source code for that component along with the MSAF source code on the Codeplex site.  You can look at this component to see examples of Silverlight, WPF, and Windows Phone 7 behaviors; and you’ll notice that the code is virtually identical – just a few #if SILVERLIGHT and #if WINDOWS_PHONE in the source code.

Added Google Analytics Support for WPF and Windows Phone 7

We made a few enhancements to the Google Analytics component to support WPF and Windows Phone 7 as well as fix a few issues found by the community.

The Next Build

We plan on making a new build of the framework installer once our analytics partners update their components as needed for the Windows Phone and the phone components reach a final build – including the Silverlight Media Framework and Smooth Streaming client controls.  You can start using the framework today for your Silverlight, WPF, and Windows Phone applications!
