Handling Input DataLet's start with creating an Employees table with following schema:Create a new...

Handling Input Data

Let's start with creating an Employees table with following schema:

Create a new stored procedure AddEmployee - It takes all the parameters of Employees table as input. It checks for existence of the employee before inserting a new record and returns the number of records inserted as return value.

We now move to the Logic Apps Designer on Azure Portal and add a new SQL Stored Procedure action. On selecting a stored procedure, the designer probes its signature and automatically shows all input parameters. Here we add an Add Employee action which takes the employee information as input. Notice that the SQL Connector is able to deal with multiple data types - integer, float, boolean, datetime, string etc.

On execution of this Logic App following output is generated for this action. The Return Code is set to 1 in the response body.

And, if we go back to the SQL Azure database, we can see a new record got inserted for this employee.

Handling Return Data

There are a few different ways in which data can be returned from a stored procedure - return code, result sets and output parameters. Following msdn article explains about them - Return Data from a Stored Procedure.
Return Code

A procedure can return an integer value called a return code to indicate the execution status of a procedure. You specify the return code for a procedure using the RETURN statement. Building upon the previous example, we can use the Return Code output from the Add Employee action in next actions like in a Condition action as shown below.

Output Parameters

If we specify OUTPUT keyword for a parameter in the stored procedure definition, the procedure can return the value assigned to the parameter to the caller when the procedure exits.

Let's create a new stored procedure GetManager - It takes employee Id as input and @manager as output parameter. It assigns the employee's manager name to the output parameter.

Inside the Logic App designer, let's add another action for Get Manager stored procedure.

On execution of this Logic App following output is generated for this action. The Output Parameters property contains one entry for manager. If there are more output parameters in the stored procedure, they would also show up under Output Parameters.

The output parameters are available for next steps in the Logic App. In the example below, we have an action Get Employee by Name which takes the manager name obtained from previous action as input.

Result Sets

Result Sets are a collection of tabular records generated through SELECT statements in a stored procedure.
In the below example, we have created a Get Reports procedure - it takes manager as input and returns a result set which consists of all his/her direct reports.

The Result Sets contains one entry corresponding to each SELECT statement present in the stored procedure. These entries follow the naming convention of Table1, Table2, ... etc.

Each table is a collection of records. We can use the ForEach construct to iterate over each record and take appropriate action(s).

The complete Logic App definition used during this session can be downloaded from here.

BizTalk Portal is now integrated with Azure Active Directory. This feature enables few important scenarios mentioned below -
Login to BizTalk Portal using organizational accounts

Users can now use their organizational accounts to manage their BizTalk Services through the BizTalk Portal provided their organizational accounts are associated with Azure Active Directory. Consider an organization 'contoso' which is integrated with Azure Active Directory. Any user from this organization (e.g. bob@contoso.com) can login to the BizTalk Portal and manage BizTalk Services he owns.

A user logged in to BizTalk Portal using organizational account can add more users from his/her organization using the 'Add User' button in 'Settings' tab to manage the same BizTalk Service. For example, bob@contoso.com can invite mary@contoso.com who is another employee in his organization (i.e. contoso) to manage the same BizTalk Service.

Login to BizTalk Portal using your Microsoft accounts

Users who don't want to use their organizational accounts or who don't have one can continue to use their Microsoft accounts (hotmail.com, live.com, outlook.com etc.) to manage their BizTalk Services through the BizTalk Portal. For example, bob@hotmail.com can manage BizTalk Services created in his personal subscriptions.

A user logged in to BizTalk Portal using a Microsoft account can add other Microsoft accounts using the 'Add User' button in 'Settings' tab to manage the same BizTalk Service. For example. bob@hotmail.com can invite mary@outlook.com to manage the BizTalk Service.

Automatic registration of user who creates the BizTalk Service

The user who creates the BizTalk Service on Azure Portal is automatically registered as administrator of the same on BizTalk Portal. He/she doesn't need to go through the (painful ? :)) process of copying the ACS secrets from Azure Portal and pasting them in the user registration page provided on the BizTalk Portal.

A user can add more users through the steps mentioned in above sections. Henceforth users probably won't even need to copy the secrets from Azure Portal. A user needs to do this only if he wants to go through explicit user registration flow on BizTalk Portal.

Gotchas

Microsoft account and Organizational accounts cannot manage same BizTalk Service - A BizTalk Service can be either associated with Microsoft accounts or Organizational accounts. Therefore, all user accounts managing a particular BizTalk Service should either be Microsoft accounts or Organizational accounts.

Users from different organizations cannot manage same BizTalk Service - A BizTalk Service can be associated with only one organization. Therefore, all organzational users accounts managing a particular BizTalk Service should belong to the same organization.

You will get following error on the register account page in either of the cases mentioned above -

In my previous post we covered backup of BizTalk Services. In this post we will cover the other part of the story, i.e. restore of BizTalk Services. To re-iterate, backup-restore feature provides solution for following scenarios:

Disaster Recovery

Service migration from dev to prod

Upgrade service edition (basic to standard, basic to premium and standard to premium)

Note: Backup-restore feature is not provided to Developer edition.

Pre-requisites and Setup

You need to install Windows Azure PowerShell on your machine and download Windows Azure BizTalk Service Management PowerShell Cmdlets. Details about both of these is available here. This link contains a sample for management of BizTalk Services through PowerShell. Follow the description of this sample to setup your machine. Summarizing the steps needed to be performed:

Install Windows Azure PowerShell

Compile the sample application to generate Microsoft.WindowsAzure.Management.BizTalkService.dll

Import Microsoft.WindowsAzure.Management.BizTalkService.dll

Set Azure Subscription

Perform Restore

Set Azure Subscription

If you followed the steps mentioned in the sample's description you should have Windows Azure PowerShell command window open with subscription set to the one where your BizTalk Service is provisioned. Execute following commands to set Azure subscription:

Location – Region where you want to restore the service

BackupName – Container inside storage account where backup is stored

BackupStoreConectionString – Storage account connection string where backup is stored

Configuration – Configuration file which contains additional input parameters for service restoration. The sample contains couple of configuration files that you can modify.
