Starting today Visual Studio extensions are now being served from the Visual Studio Marketplace. Nearly all 10,000 + private and public Visual Studio extensions have been migrated to the Visual Studio Marketplace. As part of this change we are deprecating the Storyboard Shapes extensions which were for Microsoft PowerPoint.

We will be maintaining direct downloads of the extensions using the following links in the interim. Note that these links will stop being valid in a months time.

We launched the public preview of the Visual Studio Marketplace at Connect() last year. Since then...

We launched the public preview of the Visual Studio Marketplace at Connect() last year. Since then we’ve added a lot of features and have seen great engagement from developers both building and consuming extensions. But there was always one major missing element in our catalog, and that was Visual Studio extensions.

Today we are proud to announce that all 7000+ Visual Studio extensions have been migrated from the Visual Studio Gallery to the Marketplace, finally making us the one stop for all extensions of the Visual Studio Product Family. Starting today users can browse, search, filter, rate, review and download extensions right from the Marketplace. Any new feature additions will also come to the Visual Studio product pivot, like query based search, rating and review responses, or email notifications.

All operations (review/download) done on the Marketplace will be kept up to date on the Visual Studio IDE as well. The experience on all existing Visual Studio IDEs will remain unchanged. . The Visual Studio Gallery home page will also have a banner that lets you know of the new home for Visual Studio extensions.

We’ve also taken care to ensure the publishing rights are maintained by assigning the right users permissions to manage extensions or view unpublished extensions.

Until the VS IDE traffic is redirected to the Marketplace, publishing experiences will continue to be on the Visual Studio Gallery. But at any point you can navigate to the manage page on the marketplace - https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/manage/publishers/<publisherid> (Replace <publisherid> with the actual publisher id from the url) - and choose the edit option in the extension drop down to update your extension. Clicking on edit will take you directly to the edit page for your extension on Visual Studio Gallery. Any extension added or updated to the Visual Studio Gallery will be synced over to the Marketplace.

This is only the start our journey. We are currently working on redirecting all the VS IDE API traffic that searches for and acquires extensions from the old Visual Studio Gallery to Marketplace. Following which we’ll be allowing publishers to directly publish extensions to the Visual Studio Marketplace.

If you have an extension on the Visual Studio Gallery do check out its page on the Marketplace. There may be cases where minor updates are required to your extension.

FAQ

I just submitted my extension to the Gallery I don’t see it on the Marketplace!
We sync all updates or new additions to the Gallery over to the Marketplace, but there might be a small time gap (typically around ~15min) to when it is available on the Marketplace. If you feel your extension hasn’t been updated/added on the Marketplace for a long while after submitting to the Gallery, do reach out to our support channel vsmarketplace@microsoft.com.

I have an extension on Visual Studio Gallery, do I need to do anything to it?
While we have tried to take care of nearly everything, there might still be some housekeeping required on an extension to extension basis. Here are a few that we suggest:

Check if you see all your extensions in your manage page and if you have owner permissions by seeing if you have the edit permission on the publisher. (highlighted below). You should also see an additional Reply option on reviews left on your extension.

Don’t see your extension listed? It might be under a different publisher id, check the other publishers id’s that you are a part of:

Check out how your extension tile looks on the Marketplace, you might need to update the icon image (128x128 recommended) or update the short description

Do visit your extension page on the Marketplace to see if the page needs any sprucing up. For instance you may need to upload new inline images in the description.

Come on why make me go to two places, let me publish directly to the Marketplace
We hear you, but first and foremost we wanted to ensure the thousands of users who are using your extensions from within the IDE are unaffected. They are currently continuing to hit the old Gallery service and API’s, and we wanted to make sure all the API’s are intact on our side before redirecting API traffic to Marketplace. We will be adding publishing options soon after, with a bunch of new options that you’ve been asking for a long time like CLI based publishing, or using markdown files directly for the extensions description etc.

Developer activity on an extension has proven to be an important indicator of trust and reliability...

Developer activity on an extension has proven to be an important indicator of trust and reliability for users on the Marketplace. We’ve seen two such indicators used widely by publishers:

Linking to the GitHub repository

Badges linking to Build CI systems and other public entities associated with the project.

We’ve seen a number of publishers linking to their repositories from their extension details page. We’ve also seen them respond to reviews asking users to raise an issue on their GitHub pages. Badges are also used widely in extension descriptions, for instance to link users to the CI build. We wanted to therefore, provide a consistent way for publishers to provide this information and also present a standard look and feel so that users can find these details easily when browsing across multiple extensions.

Ok I get it, so what does it look like?

We’ve added a project details section on the extensions page (on the right rail) that groups the repository and badge information for an extension. It also pulls relevant information from GitHub like active pull requests, open issues and time since the last commit.

Great! How do I add it to my extension?

There are now new ‘repository’ and ‘badges’ sections in the extension manifest that you can populate for these links to show up. You can find the details of them in the VSTS documentation and VS Code documentation.

We aim to continuously improve the browsing experience on Marketplace and are introducing new designs for the extension tiles on our website.

The tiles on the home page are now optimized for increased exploration and hence, do not include the extension description upfront. Instead, the extension description is now revealed when the user hovers their cursor over the tiles.

The tiles on the Marketplace search and category pages have also undergone a face-lift with cosmetic improvements in the UI elements. The new look is more visually balanced as well as consistent with the layout of the new tiles on the home page.

We ran this design optimization by a set of test users comparing user responses with a control group. We calculated key metrics and analyzed the benefits of optimizing the tile design on the home page and how it helps our users discover more content from their page visit.

Expect more from us as we continue our progress in optimizing the user journey for discovering productivity tools and extensions that boost their everyday work.

The new tiles would be live on the website now. Do write to us at vsmarketplace@microsoft.com or tweet at us with the hashtag #VSMarketplace with any feedback.

FAQs

Why do the home page and the category/ search pages not have the same tile design?
The home page tiles are intentionally concise helping the users notice more extensions upfront. While, the search and category tiles are designed to highlight the “queried” or “filtered” information. Therefore, the difference between the two tile designs.

Will I still be able to access sufficient information about each extension?
Yes. On the homepage, hovering over the tiles would reveal the short description. While on the search and category pages, users would notice the information upfront as a part of the tiles.

We have enabled a new filter experience with the aim of simplifying the search and navigation on the Marketplace.

Filters are now part of the results page, providing more prominence to the extensions on the page. It also allows us to add more filter options, like the Price filter, to quickly filter for paid extensions for VSTS.

The top level navigation is also now consistent with the home page, allowing you to quickly switch context and view the relevant search for another product. Please note that this does not work in the subscriptions view as we don’t support search on the subscriptions page today. Switching to the subscriptions view currently takes you out of the search context.

We’ve also combined the search and category pages to a common view. As a result, you can now get similar information like number of extensions in the category and also access search directly from the category page.

The Marketplace logo on the header will take you to the home page from any point in the site, just like it did before.

Since the launch of Ratings and Reviews on the Marketplace we’ve seen tremendous response from both users and publishers. There has been great engagement between publishers and users sharing feedback, dealing with bugs and suggesting improvements.

Given the importance of reviews for both publishers and users we’ve now enabled email notifications for reviews.

As a publisher:

Publishers will now receive an email notification when a user leaves a review of the extension containing the rating as well as the review text. We also provide a link back to your extension if you wish to respond to the review.

Marketplace is on a mission to energize the developer ecosystem and strengthen the community around Visual Studio family of products, subscriptions and services. We want to be the one place where developers can offer/monetize and find/acquire all the tools they need across any Visual Studio product, and since its launch as Preview back in November, it is well on its way towards that. Thanks to your support, Marketplace has already served nearly 5M downloads for over 1.7M unique visitors.

You have seen us adding broad set of features such as search, ratings & reviews, dynamic categories, fine-grained publisher roles for ease of administration and so on. We’ve also enabled tighter integration with TFS for on-prem support and frictionless install experiences for VSCode users. Most recently we brought the notion of Trials for VSTS/TFS extensions as well.

We are now busy working on enabling commerce for our VSTS/TFS publishers, seamless experiences for TFS connected environments and enriching publishers’ experiences, just to mention a few. Another key area, we are investing on, is to bring all the Visual Studio IDE extensions from current VS gallery directly into Marketplace, so that the users will have a single go-to place for everything they need around the whole of Visual Studio family. You will see us make the site responsive as well.

It’s super exciting time for us in the team, and we are looking forward to bringing these valuable features to you over the next few months. This is our new home for all Marketplace related announcements and other relevant info to make you more productive, whether you are writing new extensions or looking for some. Watch this space!

As always, we welcome your suggestions and feedback -- either on our UserVoice site, or by direct emails to VSMarketplace-at-microsoft.com or on Twitter with #VSMarketplace.
