Microsoft® today introduced MOAC Labs Online 2.0, an evolutionary improvement to the MOAC Lab Online experience launched in November 2008.  Version 2.0 comes with improved lab launching rates and tines, improved performance within a lab, and improved ability to successfully complete the lab.  MOAC Labs Online 2.0 will be available for all 8 MOAC Labs Online titles starting December 10th.

“2.0 is delivering exactly what our users need,” said Dan Weis, Product Manager of Microsoft Learning’s Hands-On Lab product line, “It just works.  No more complexity getting into a lab, no more slow screens in the virtual machine, and easier set up.”

MOAC Labs Online 2.0 features substantially reduced system requirements for use.  Users will now be able to launch a lab at 40 Kbps per user versus 300 Kbps under the current experience.  Users will be able to load labs in under 1 minute versus 3 minutes currently.  An ActiveX control will still need to be installed, on the first time use, to enable users to connect to the lab.

Microsoft has made improvements to the user interface based on user feedback.  “These improvements are evolutionary not revolutionary,” said Dan Weis, “they are intuitive and easy to grasp.  Now users can use dual monitors.  Now users can run the labs at a higher resolution.  We are giving users what they want.”

MOAC Labs Online has caught the attention of its users over the last two years by reducing complexity in teaching Microsoft Technologies.  Microsoft Learning created Labs Online to further innovate on the practice tools IT Professionals, and novices, use to learn about Microsoft Technology.

All Labs Online are still running on Microsoft's servers even if you can't see it on your screen.  In most instances the lab should automatically reconnect.  If it does not, please click on the VM tab that you want to work in to refresh the VM.  If that does not work.  please simply close the lab viewer and relaunch the same lab you were just in.  You will be prompted to choose from existing or new lab; please choose existing.

We are pleased to announce the release of the MOAC Labs Online Check Tool.  The Check Tool will determine whether your computer is set up successfully to have a satisfactory experience with MOAC Labs Online. 

The Check Tool examines your computer to determine whether it meets the recommended technical requirements for using MOAC Labs Online. 

·       You can run this tool for any machine on which you plan to use MOAC Labs Online. You can also use the tool to test your network’s capacity to support multiple users concurrently.

·       Remember that bandwidth is shared across your network.  If you are in a classroom you need to have enough bandwidth for the number of planned concurrent users. The tool will tell you how many users you can run concurrently assuming the bandwidth reported in the tool does not change per user.

“How does that create substantial value for my training company?”
Microsoft Learning Labs Online greatly reduce time spent on setting up labs and downloading lab images, giving training companies a chance to better utilize staff and instructors’ time. In addition, expensive hardware is not required to run Labs Online – reducing hardware upgrade costs and initial set-up costs of building new classrooms or training centers.
With Microsoft Learning Labs Online, training companies are no longer restricted to delivering training in physical classrooms which offers a lot more flexibility and the option to offer virtual classrooms.
“Will this change how training is provided?”
As an on-demand service, Microsoft Learning Labs Online offer the flexibility to add students any time before a class starts with minimal effort to install additional labs. Instructors may test labs and prepare for training anytime, anywhere. Students can access labs outside of class time up to four weeks to reinforce classroom learning. This in our opinion is one of the hidden benefits. Students can practice before, during, and after the class. Now there can be pre-class work, Microsoft Learning Labs Online, to help ensure that students are on the same page. Now students can go home during the class, use Microsoft Learning Labs Online, and come back the next day and ask smarter questions on the subject matter. 
And perhaps “how can I try one?”
Our Certified Partners for Learning Solutions and Microsoft Certified Trainers can try the labs online now through the Courseware Library. Just log into the Courseware Library to acquire licenses for Labs Online. The code ‘trybeforeyoubuy’ at checkout will give you up to 10 free licenses. Limit: one coupon per partner. If you are a MCT please email us to get access to Labs Online to experience the product first hand. If you are a student you will have to wait until the next time you are in class to experience Labs Online. If the class doesn’t use Labs Online, please ask the class provider to start doing so. Microsoft Learning is creating an advisory partner council to meet and provide feedback/input on its virtualization based labs.  We are looking for individuals knowledgeable with the business costs of running labs and or technical implementation.  Operations staff members, business owner/general managers, for example, are the job roles most applicable to the council.  The advisory council will have a recurring meeting for 60-90 minutes approximately twice a quarter.  Membership on the council will run for 3 years.  The council will have 10 seats.  If you are interested in learning more please email Dan Weis.
