Hello, everyone!

Dark Theme has been a consistent top feedback point for the MSN News app. Back in January we released dark theme for articles to help with nighttime reading, but this did not extend to the full MSN News experience. Now, we are very happy to respond to your feedback, and showcase a new and improved dark theme experience across MSN News.

[caption id="attachment_75" align="aligncenter" width="1024"] Dark Theme on MSN News[/caption]

The new experience is available on version 4.12.184 and higher. To double-check your app version, you can always go to Settings, About.

If your operating system theme is already set to dark, the app will automatically switch to the dark theme. Otherwise you can always switch to the dark theme via "Turn on dark theme" menu item in the Command Bar or via the app settings page. Note that certain pages which are served via external web pages may not support the dark theme.

We would like to hear from you on your experience with the dark theme. Let us know! Please use the in-app Feedback feature, or ping me via @xnt.

If you're a Windows Insider, and you're in a build greater than 14315, you've probably seen a super cool change in the Feedback Hub. You can comment, now! What about MSN feedback then?

Being able to talk back to your awesome feedback is a great way of letting you know when we've released something based on your suggestions, or when we need more data (and what kind of data we need). A few weeks ago, I sat down with other MSN folks and started answering back to some of your feedback.

Evidently, our list was not super exhaustive. But we were able to reply on several thousands of feedback items (many of which follow similar themes, but still).

I don't want to spoil all the surprises, so I invite you to check the feedback you've left for our apps and web, and see if it's been acted on, or a comment has been added to it. Here are some examples, though:

MSN Money App - Commodities tab not working

MSN News Web - Breaking News stream not loading

MSN Sports App - I want to pin my favorite team

MSN Weather App - Manual and automatic refresh

There are more feedback items with comments. And we'll definitely try to keep them flowing. You keep the feedback coming, too (good or bad :) ), and if you can't see the Feedback Hub with commenting capabilities, jump to the Insider train!

Howdy, MSN (Apps) Users!

We love reading your Feedback. You're so passionate! The apps are there to help you know more, do more and experience more of the Windows 10 awesomeness, so knowing how are they accomplishing that goal is extremely important.

I asked my buddy Jakov to go through the top-voted feedback items that we've addressed. Ironically, one of them is that we don't pay attention to feedback. We do, we really do! I hope this post is proof of it. There are some things we may not be able to do, or not as quickly as we'd like to, but every little upvote and feedback piece matters so please keep it coming!

Anyway, here's the super list. Please note: this is not a comprehensive changelog.

Fixed on 4.6.169.0:

All - Content loading slowly for users in China

All - "An Error Occurred, Please Refresh" when refreshing

Money, News - Can't disable notifications

Money - Russia Rouble doesn't display symbol

Sports - Last Column in Standings table is cut off

Weather - Lots of cities are missing

Fixed if you have Windows 10543 or higher:

All - Some web news fail to load

Weather - Map doesn't load

Fixed in our end, no need for you to update:

Weather - No data for China after 10/19

News - Service not available starting 10/22

Cool, eh? So now you know: your feedback matters, and we'll try to keep you posted on how each new app version reflects that. Also! If you're still seeing any of the above, you can either leave a comment here or on the Feedback app. That would be super helpful!

Thank you!

While reading your feedback, I saw someone having issues with adding back a section. Particularly, he/she removed the "Money" section from the Home Page accidentally and couldn't get it back.

Well, in case this happens to someone else... Here is how to do it!

Click on the arrow at the top-right of one of the sections you still have there. For example, News.

Click "Add Section Below"

Click "Money" (or, whatever section you'd like to add) and "Done"

The page will reload. Your section should be back!

Being involved in the Software business is like being involved in something magic. Have you watched Fullmetal Alchemist? Remember the "Equivalent Exchange" rule? Basically you can't create stuff out of nothing: you have to give something in exchange, something equivalent. If you want ice, you have to give up on water and heat. If you want a piece of furniture, you have to give up on some wood, plastic, metal, and hard work... There are, however, a few ways in which we can create stuff whose result greatly exceeds what we give in exchange. And Software is a great example.

It's like having a superpower. Software and Information have been redefining the world at an incredibly fast pace for the last decades. That's sped up with the popularization of the internet, and then again as our devices become smaller, more portable, more social and more capable. A lot of attention is given to the economical and technical enrichment derived of that magic; but I'm afraid many engineers (not all of them, of course) forget paying attention to the social improvement potential of their superpowers...

Then the internet came and, leaving aside the ridiculously slow dial-up connection speeds, everything was easier.

Last week, I had the opportunity to deliver a talk about Object Oriented Design Patterns to the Foundry Vancouver folks.

Since it was their last "lecture" before getting all into the action, and it was early Friday, I expected them to be a bit bored or something... Fortunately, it wasn't the case. Their energy, willingness to learn (and teach some stuff to this old salt ☺ ) was inspiring.

Although I'd delivered similar talks and workshops before, this is the first time it was not in Spanish. I really wish the language wasn't that much of a barrier anyway.

We talked about different topics, including:

What's a Design Pattern

Why are they important

Why you want to learn Spanish if you travel to Mexico

How to implement a factory in C#, using dragons, because dragons are cool

The fact that I can't 100% remember Toothless/NightFury

How to implement a builder in C++ (yup, believe it or not, I still remember a bit of C++)

Some builders in the Android API (they aren't doing Android, but just because)

C3PO as an adapter

How being a father is, in some aspects, similar to software

I hope they had as much fun as I did, and I'm super excited to see what they'll create by the end of their internship. If they keep the attitude and energy that they displayed on Friday, I also hope they become my colleagues sometime soon!
