Fields

Description

BOM

The BOM identification number for the BOM version that will be used. System-generated BOM numbers appear when BOM versions are created.

Name

The descriptive name of the BOM version, which you enter when you create BOM versions and can modify as needed.

Site

The site for the BOM version. If you leave the field blank, the BOM version is valid for all sites.

From date

The first date that the BOM version is valid. This field is used in the management of multiple BOM versions.

To date

The last date that the BOM version is valid.

From qty.

The minimum quantity that is valid for this BOM version. When generating orders, Microsoft Dynamics AX selects a BOM version based on this and other criteria that you define. If the field is cleared, this BOM version is valid for all quantities.

A selected check box indicates that the BOM version is active.

Approved by

The person who approved the current BOM version. Click Approve to access the Approve version dialog box.

Approved

A selected check box indicates that the BOM version is approved. A BOM version must be approved before it is activated and used.

Item number

The identifier of the item.

Configuration

Select an item configuration to enter an item with specific attributes.

Size

The size of the item.

Color

The color of the item.

Warehouse

The picking warehouse for material consumption.

Resource consumption

If this check box is selected, material consumption is assigned for the BOM line to the operations resource. The operations resource refers to a production unit, which defines a picking warehouse.

Assigning material consumption to the operations resource is useful, for example, when the BOM version does not refer to a particular site but is valid for all sites. In this situation, you must be able to define a different picking warehouse for each site.

If this check box is cleared, you can enter the picking warehouse in the Warehouse field on the line.

If you do not enter a value in the Warehouse field on the line, Microsoft Dynamics AX uses the picking warehouse from the item master data.

Quantity

The number of items included in one unit, or one series of the BOM item. If the quantity is calculated per series, indicate the basis of the series in the Per series field.

Example

If a BOM item is generally referred to in 100-pound packages, and there are 10 pounds of component item A per 100-pound package, the quantity would be 10 per series 100. In production, it involves a gain of the current item; in consumption, it is a negative quantity.

Per series

Number of units for which the Quantity field is valid.

Example

If the quantity is 1, the unit is liter, and per series is 100, one liter of the item is required to produce 100 finished BOM items.

Unit

The unit in which the Quantity field is given. The BOM unit is used as the default, which is retrieved from the BOM unit field in the Items form. Otherwise, the field is left blank.

Configuration group

The configuration group for the item. Configuration groups are created in the bill of material (BOM) setup.

For more information, see Configuration groups (form).

BOM

The BOM identification number for the selected BOM version.

Position

Assign positions to items to sort or arrange the order of items on BOM lines.

Example

2

Item 00B

3

Item 00C

1

Use the sorting criteria to retrieve a sequentially ordered list of items on the BOM line according to position.

The items in the example are arranged in the following order:

  1. Item 00C

  2. Item 00A

  3. Item 00B

Vendor account

The vendor account for items that are assigned to the Vendor line type.

Line type

The type of BOM line. Each type of BOM line has a specific function. The following options are available:

  • Item – Raw materials for the BOM line must be picked in inventory, or the item is a service.

  • Phantom – The item must be exploded in the production BOM. When a BOM is exploded, it creates the raw materials and operations that were created as base data for the item on the BOM. Explosion is used for estimation.

  • Pegged supply – There is an underproduction for the item on the BOM line. The underproduction is created when you run an estimate for the production order. The system reserves and marks the quantity for the underproduction.

  • Vendor – A purchase order must be created for subcontractor work. If the item on the BOM line is of the Vendor type, an underproduction is created when the current production is first estimated. The underproduction has the Vendor type, and the items on the BOM are created as BOM lines for the underproduction. On BOM lines that are of the Vendor type, you must either enter a value in the Oper. No. field that refers to an operation in the production route that is of the Vendor type, or specify a vendor on the BOM line.

Oper. No.

Defines where the item is used in the sequence of operations on the route. If no value is specified, the item is picked for the first operation. Operation numbers can be selected from defined routes in the Route form.

End

If this check box is selected, consumption of the BOM line is scheduled when the operation is ended.

Calculation

If this check box is selected, the BOM line is included in cost calculations. BOM calculations determine the cost-price and sales prices for the BOM depending on profit settings. BOM calculations determine the estimated BOM prices on all BOM levels. The contribution of a single item or operation to the price of the BOM level can be determined. The contribution of all items and operations on a specific level can also be determined.

The calculations also provide an overview of summarized costs for cost groups. This provides the contribution of a cost group on a particular BOM level.

Sub-BOM

The alternative BOM version that is used when changing sub-BOM versions for a finished item. If a sub-BOM version is not specified, the active BOM version is used.

Subroute

For sub-BOM lines only. The route number to use for the selected sub-BOM. If a subroute is not specified, the active route is used.

Product model number

The product model identification.

Set subproduction to Consumed

If this check box is selected, BOM line consumption and time are automatically assigned when you create project production orders that use the consumption method. If this check box is cleared, the BOM line is posted as cost to the project as a project item transaction. If you select the check box, the BOM lines and hours of the subproduction are posted as cost to the project, as multiple project item and project hour transactions.

Note

This check box is available to modify when the Line type field is set to Pegged supply.

Project productions are created by using the consumed method when the Posting method field on the Production tab of the Project management and accounting parameters form is set to Consumed. This is the default posting method, but you can change it when you create production orders from the Project management and accounting module.

From date

The date from which the BOM line is valid.

To date

The last date that the BOM line is valid.

Formula

The consumption calculation formula. The options are as follows:

  • Standard - The consumption is not proportional with any dimension of the finished item, and the quantity entered is the number that is used for the finished item.

  • Height * Constant

  • Height * Width * Constant

  • Height * Width * Depth * Constant

  • (Height * Width * Depth / Density) * Constant

Raw material consumption in the current BOM line is proportional with one or more dimensions in the finished item. If there is proportionality, measurement-based management is useful as only one BOM, and one item must be created that applies for all measurements of the finished item.

An example of using measurements might be a board with customized measurements for each customer. The consumption of the raw material depends completely on the measurements used to cut the board, which is why the consumption can also be calculated automatically.

A configuration dimension can be redefined to determine other characteristics relative to the finished item. For example, the height dimension can be defined instead to be the number of coats for painted articles, because the raw materials consumption, in that case, is also proportional with the number of times the article is to be painted.

A measurement is a formula for calculation that can be used for any purpose.

The fields in the Dimensions tab are conversion factors that are included in the measurement calculation together with the dimension of the finished item.

For example, if calculating the consumption of paint for a board measuring 2 x 2 feet, 4 square feet must be converted to a quantity of gallons of paint. This is done with the help of these conversion factors.

Consumption is

The method of consumption. This determines whether consumption is a variable or constant quantity or volume.

Flushing principle

The method that is used to register the item consumption for a production order. The options are as follows:

  • Start - Enable automatic consumption a production order is started. This is the default setting for a new item and an existing item that is updated.

  • Finish - Enable automatic consumption when you report a production order as finished.

  • Manual - The system does not register consumption automatically. You must enter it manually on the picking list.

If you leave this field blank, the Flushing principle setting on the item is used.

Note

To enable automatic consumption, use this field together with the Automatic BOM consumption field when you update the production order.

Constant scrap

Define a constant scrap value. Scrap is calculated in the unit specified in the BOM line. Scrap is used to calculate adjustments to raw material consumption values in BOM lines.

Variable scrap

The percentage of variable scrap. Variable scrap is specified as a percent, where 10% is written as 10.00. Scrap is used to calculate corrected raw material usage in the BOM lines.

Rounding-up

The type of rounding-up to use. Rounding-up is used if the raw materials are consumed in specific quantities.

The following options are available:

  • No - Rounding-up is not used.

  • Quantity – The quantity must be a multiple of the given quantity. For example, when whole numbers are required, enter 1.00 in the Multiples field. Numbers are always rounded to quantities that are divisible by 1.00.

  • Measurement - Round-up when a raw material comes in specific dimensions.

  • Consumption - Round-up so that consumption is divisible by the number of units that the raw material comes in. This is used when consumption of a raw material can only be used in certain quantities, and the rest of the raw material is considered scrap.

    Example

Steel rods frequently come in a fixed length. If the length of the steel rod is 5 feet, and two 2-foot pieces are needed, the fixed scrap value is always 1 foot for every 5 feet of rod. In this case, Measurement is selected for rounding-up, and the multiple is set to 5. To round up:

  1. Determine the sales quantity based on the measurement dimensions.

In the example, the quantity is 2.

  2. Determine the number of times that the measurement sales quantity can be divided into multiples.

In the example, 5 / 2 = 2.5. The sales quantity is rounded down to 0 decimals, which mean 2.5 = 2. That formula identifies that a 5 foot steel rod can be cut into two, 2 foot pieces.

  3. Calculate consumption because the number of multiples that are required to produce a specific quantity is known.

In the example, a 5 foot rod produces 2 pieces of 2 foot rod. If the production quantity for the finished item is 10 units, 10 / 2 = 5 multiples are used. Because each multiple is 5 feet, consumption is calculated to 5 multiples x 5 feet = 25 feet. If the same calculation is performed without rounding-up according to measurement, the consumption would be calculated as 10 units x 2-foot pieces = 20 feet. When rounding up according to measurement, the system calculates that there are 5 feet of scrap for a production of 10 units.

    Example

Paint is stored in inventory in 25 quart cans. When paint is taken from inventory, it is taken in increments of 25 quarts. In this case, rounding-up according to consumption is selected, and multiples are set to 25.

The production quantity for the finished item is 20 units, and 2 quarts of paint must be used for each unit. Consumption is calculated as 20 units x 2 quarts = 40 quarts. When rounded up to a multiple of 25, 50 quarts of paint are required. When rounding up according to consumption, excess consumption, or scrap, of 10 quarts is automatically calculated.

Multiples

The multiples in which the item is consumed. Used together with rounding-up.

Height

The conversion factor for the height dimension. Used in the formula for BOM calculations to determine space requirements for items.

Width

The conversion factor for the width dimension. This is used in the formula for BOM calculations to determine space requirements for items.

Depth

The conversion factor for the depth dimension. This is used in the formula for BOM calculations to determine space requirements for items.

Density

The conversion factor for the density dimension. This is used in the formula for BOM calculations to determine space requirements for items.

Constant

The conversion factor for the sales quantity. This is used in the formula for BOM calculations to determine space requirements for items.

Batch number

Enter the batch number dimension. If you select Edit lines and Explode lines in the upper section of the Shipment or Receive forms, you can modify the batch number for the transfer order line.

Location

The location inside a warehouse. If you select Edit lines and Explode lines in the upper section of the Shipment or Receive forms, you can modify the location number for the transfer order line.

Pallet ID

The unique identification for the pallet (Serial Shipping Container Code).

Serial number

The serial number dimension. If you select Edit lines and Explode lines in the upper section of the Shipment or Receive forms, you can modify the serial number for the transfer order line.
