Configuration groups (form)

Applies To: Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3, Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2, Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 Feature Pack, Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012

Click Inventory management > Setup > Bills of materials > Configuration groups.

Use this form to modify configuration groups used in the allocation of configuration groups to individual BOM lines.

By using configuration groups, you can create bills of materials where Microsoft Dynamics AX uses a bill of material to select a particular BOM line based on the specified configuration group.

Example:

Suppose that two items in the BOM lines (bicycle frames) are allocated to the same configuration group titled Frame. This means that two configurations, one for each frame, can be created for the item. You enter the item number (bicycle) into a sales order line, and set up the configuration for the bicycle in the Configure item (form) form.

Based on this principle, a completed bicycle can be defined as one item composed of various frames, wheels, and handlebars, which you can select from when configuring the bicycle. The advantage is that you do not have to create an item for all the possible combinations that exist. However, the various combinations must share the same general data, which is specified in the inventory base data.

A bicycle comes in two different frame sizes. You can create two items (two bicycles), each with its own item number (frame) in the BOM lines. Alternatively, you can create one item (one item number for the bicycle), where you select one of the frames.

The following table provides descriptions for the controls in this form.
