End of support is quickly approaching for the following products:
Support for SQL Server 2008 and 2008 R2 will end on July 9, 2019.
Support for Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2 will end on January 14, 2020.
End of support means regular security updates will no longer be provided. With cyberattacks becoming more sophisticated and frequent, running apps and data on unsupported versions can create significant security and compliance risks. It is highly recommended that customers upgrade to the most current versions for better performance, efficiency and regular security updates.
For customers who need more time, we are announcing Extended Security Updates for SQL Server and Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2. This additional extended servicing option will help secure your workloads for three more years after the end of support deadline, giving more time to migrate to current versions such as SQL Server 2017 and Windows Server 2016.
Extended Security Updates will also be included in Azure virtual machines at no additional charge, allowing customers to rehost their SQL Server and Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2 workloads in Azure with no application code change.
