Share Power BI data in Microsoft Teams channels, chats, and meetings

APPLIES TO: Power BI service for business users Power BI service for designers & developers Power BI Desktop Requires Pro or Premium license

You can share Power BI reports, scorecards, and dashboards in Microsoft Teams by adding a Power BI tab to a channel, chat, or meeting, or by pasting links that become rich preview cards.

Prerequisites

Add a Power BI tab to a Teams channel, chat, or meeting

Pin a Power BI report, scorecard, or dashboard as a tab so your team can access it directly from a channel, chat, or meeting.

  1. Open the channel, chat, or meeting where you’d like to share.
  2. Select the + Add a tab button and add the Power BI tab.
  3. Pick the Power BI report, scorecard, or dashboard you'd like to share.
  4. Select Save.

Give team members permission to view Power BI content

Make sure your team has permission to the report or scorecard by sharing it with them.

  1. Open the item in Power BI in Teams, or in the Power BI service, and select File > Manage Permissions.

If you don't see this option, you might not have permission to share the item. Team members can request access when they try to view the report.

  2. Select Direct access.

  3. Select Add user.

  4. Add the names of your colleagues. Choose the permissions to grant, decide whether to send an email notification, and select Grant access.

Share links to Power BI reports in a Teams conversation. Teams converts the link into a rich preview card that colleagues can select to open the report. For more information, see Chat in Microsoft Teams directly from the Power BI service.

  1. In the Teams channel or chat, start a new conversation.

  2. In the command bar for the editor, select Messaging extensions (...).

  3. Select Power BI.

  4. Search for the content you want to share, or select from your list of recent items.

  5. Pick a Power BI item.

  6. Select Send.

A rich card is added to the conversation so anyone can open the Power BI item.

Copy a report URL from the Power BI service and paste it into a Teams conversation to generate a rich preview card automatically.

  1. Open a report in the Power BI service in the browser, and copy the link.
  2. Start a conversation and paste the link. Teams automatically creates a rich card.
  3. Select Send.
  4. The recipient sees a rich card with a link to open the report.
