How to: Use Radio-Provided Wireless GSM Telephony in the Emulator

The emulator supports external radios that provide wireless telephony testing capabilities on the development workstation.

Note   This is supported only for Windows Mobile 2003 and earlier.

To establish data and voice communications through the emulator by using an external radio

  1. Using the instructions provided with the radio, connect a WaveCom WMOD2B external GSM radio module to one of the COM ports of the development workstation. The radio can be attached to ports COM1 to COM4, as long as the port used is not a shared port. For more information about this module, https://www.wavecom.com.
  2. Connect the telephone handset and insert the GSM Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) into the radio.
  3. Use the Emulator Configuration dialog box in PlatMan to select the downloaded image as the active image.
  4. Set the emulated serial port to match the actual port where the radio is connected:
    1. In eMbedded Visual C++, on the Tools menu, click Configure Platform Manager; in Microsoft eMbedded Visual Basic®, on the Tools menu, click Remote Tools, and then click Configure Platform Manager.
    2. In the device list, click Pocket PC 2003 Emulator, and then click Properties.
    3. Click Configure (next to the Startup Server drop-down list box).
    4. In the drop-down list box next to Serial Port 2, select the COM port to which the external radio module is attached.
    5. Click OK to close the Emulation Configuration Settings dialog box.
    6. Click OK to close the Device Properties dialog box.
    7. Click OK to close the Windows CE Platform Manager Configuration dialog box.

The emulator should now be able to complete data and voice calls.
